1 May News May 2017 The Good Shepherd Artist: Michelle Sanders Painted at St Thomas 30 April 2017
2 From John All my fountains are found in you. - concludes the Psalmist in Psalm 87. This Psalm is a remarkable psalm, in that there is an anticipation that many non-israelites will, not simply come to Zion, but be recorded - by the LORD - as her children. This concept is prevalent in the New Testament, in regards to gentiles coming to faith, but is seldom seen in the Old Testament. Those occasions where it does occur are rich with imagery, anticipating the light that will shine upon people who are far from God and living in darkness. It is these non-israelites (all of which were enemies of Israel) that the Psalmist says will make music and will sing, All my fountains are in you. (Ps 87:7). It is not difficult to understand the meaning, a fountain is something refreshing, thirst quenching, cleansing, cooling and most welcome. These pilgrims declare All my fountains are in you, what is meant by All? I do not think it is a wild stretch to say that these pilgrims see that all their needs are met in the city of God. For us, it is to Christ we say, All our fountains are in you. The Apostle Paul writes, Christ Jesus has become for us wisdom from God that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption 1 Cor 1:30. In others words, every facet of our lives that is in deficit, incomplete and wanting, is fulfilled in Christ. What we lack in virtue, Christ has in abundance. As Christians we are constantly learning to drink deeply from Christ that our lives might be full of His abundance. I read a Psalm daily, and only recently read Psalm 87. On that same morning I also read Philippians where Paul unashamedly writes, God can testify how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus, Phil 1:8. What a remarkable thing to express, yet he is not glorifying himself, rather Paul has learnt to drink so deeply of Christ that he now shares in our Lord s affection for others. Where are you lacking in your life? Where are you thirsty? I pray that you will see in Christ that He, not only has everything you don t but also, gives it to you like a refreshing fountain to a thirsty traveller. John
3 Corroboree William BARAK - Wurundjeri people ( ) Acknowledgement of Country In the spirit of reconciliation, St Thomas Burwood acknowledges the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nations as the original custodians of the land now known as Whitehorse. We pay our respects to the Indigenous Elders past and present. Reconciliation prayer Lord God, bring us together as one, reconciled with you and reconciled with each other. You made us in your likeness, you gave us your Son, Jesus Christ. He has given us forgiveness from sin. Lord God, bring us together as one, different in culture, but given new life in Jesus Christ, together as your body, your Church, your people. Lord God, bring us together as one, reconciled, healed, forgiven, sharing you with others as you have called us to do. In Jesus Christ, let us be together as one. Amen. Reconciliation Prayer from A Prayer Book for Australia

5 Half year appeal In the recent Treasurers report to Parish Council it was announced that St Thomas is $6000 behind budget. You may remember that late last year we ran a Mission Appeal as we were $20K below budget and needed to keep to our obligations for our link Missionaries. Back then we made the decision that we would avoid waiting to the end of the year to run an appeal. We would track how we are going quarterly and, if needed, run smaller appeals to rectify having a larger appeal. $6K So here we are seeking to raise $6000 so we can remain on target for the mission of St Thomas. If just 120 people give $50 we will get rid of the dread thermometer. We have currently raised $1685, which is a great effort. Let s finish it off. If you haven t contributed yet, here are the ways you can: $3K Direct Deposit Acc Name: St Thomas Burwood BSB: Acc: Reference: Half Year Appeal Credit Card Use the Tithely App or logon on to elvanto Member s page and click Give Reference: Half Year Appeal $0 Cash or Cheque Appeal Envelope available at Welcome desk. 11 Financial Update General Account Our goal this financial year is to breakeven, and so far in the first 6 months of the year (Oct to Mar) we are facing a $10k deficit. Our expenses line up closely with the budget, so the deficit is driven by a shortfall in giving (~$1.8k per month). ~95% of our income comes from the congregation, so the main way to move from a $10k deficit to breakeven is for everyone to increase their giving. The risk if we do nothing is that our deficit will continue to increase and thereby impact our ability to pay our staff, mission partners and daily expenses. Building Account We took out a $900k loan a few years ago to build the church and our loan balance currently stands at $807k, with a mortgage repayment of $6.1k per month. So far, we are meeting our monthly obligations with the help of large oneoff donations ($30k) from a select few. However without these donations, we are only giving $4.5k per month, meaning a shortfall of $1.6k per month. Overall Whilst we continue to receive generous giving from everyone, we do need to increase our giving into both the general and building account in the next 4-6 months to ensure we are able to breakeven.
