2 Welcome to College Wesleyan Church The mission of College Wesleyan Church is to make more and better disciples who transform the community and resource the Church. CWC desires to partner with God in restoring people and redeeming the world by reflecting Jesus Christ. We want you to feel at home and well-informed as you enter into worship and become a part of our church family. To assist you in navigating opportunities each week to grow and serve, you will find printed materials for each ministry area, in the Atrium. You can also find out more at our website, collegewes.com or call us in the church office at , M-F for more personalized service. * Platform Symbol: Throughout ancient and modern literature, mirrors have symbolized truth and identity. They reflect what is before them, and so by looking into a mirror, we can see ourselves as we truly are. During our Slave to Child series, we will examine core questions and truths about how God sees us, how we see God, and how we see each other. On the platform is a fragmented collage of over 500 mirrors. Though God has created us in his image, sin has corrupted our union with God, with each other, and with ourselves. But the good news of the Gospel declares redemption and restoration through the person of Jesus Christ, who is God in the flesh. His life, death, and resurrection (symbolized by the cross) provides a pathway into the family of God. In Him rests all of our hope for wholeness; in Him we find our true identity.

SPLASH TEAM LEADER APPRECIATION DAY OCTOBER 14 Come to church this morning prepared to say THANK YOU to your child s Sunday School teacher. This commitment makes a huge difference in your child s life as your child comes to church to a familiar face and expected routines. We believe in SPLASH that programs won t change lives -- but relationships will! Sympathy: Jewell (Kierstead) Yohe, a sister of Nancy Heer (whose late husband, Ken, pastored College Wesleyan) and the late Lois Howell, died Thursday, September 20 in Wabash. Her funeral was held Tuesday, September 25. Praise: Thanks to God for sparing Florence (SC) from Florence (hurricane). My daughter and family had no wind damage, no flood, no power outage and the kids only were out of school for a few days. Terry O Donnell If you would like to be part of the Prayer Team which receives prayer requests via , send a message to Pastor Alex (alex.mandura@collegewes.com). 11 OUR MISSION Making More & Better Disciples We are blessed to be adjacent to the campus of Indiana Wesleyan University and consider it a gift to be part of raising up students for leadership in the world. We are excited by the numbers of students from both IWU and Taylor University who worship with us each Sunday, who serve in ministry with us and are part of Spiritual Formation groups. As a sending church, our Ministry Development Program (MDP) continues to equip and send out leaders into youth ministry, denominational headquarters, church revitalization and other ministry areas. Transforming the Community With more than 300 commissioned shepherds, we are committed to influencing our neighborhoods, workplaces, and homes with the transforming power of Jesus Christ. We seek to develop strong and healthy families which aid in the revitalization of our community. Resourcing the Church In building partnerships with other churches, we have opportunity to influence, serve, and lead beyond our own congregation. These partnerships inspire and produce events, curriculum, and services that promote a nurturing ministry and revitalization of smaller local churches. 12 SERMON NOTES The Freedom of Obedience Genesis 17:1-7, 10-11; Romans 4:7-13, Why do I do what I do? What is my relationship with the Law? To a slave, freedom always means the end of whatever is holding him back, whether it is bad (like the prodigal) or good (like the elder brother). But children obey the promise, not the law. They obey because of what they are (sons or daughters who share the Father s image) and because of what they re becoming. Their freedom consists in moving within a set of disciplines that they have assigned to themselves that multiply their options and stretch their horizons.
