1 WORLD REFUGEE SUNDAY SUNDAY, JUNE 24, :00 & 11:15 A.M. HOLY EUCHARIST RITE II WELCOME TO ST. MARGARET S EPISCOPAL CHURCH If you are visiting us for the first time, let us offer you an especially warm welcome. We hope that you will enjoy worshiping with us. If at any moment in the service you are not sure what to do, ask any of your neighbors in the congregation they will be happy to help you. We would like to continue our relationship with you, so please fill out a visitor card (found in the pew racks) and drop the card in the collection plate or hand it to one of the clergy or ushers. FORMATION We provide Sunday School and Christian formation to children from ages 3 to 18 from Sept. May. While children are always welcome at all services, professional nursery care for children ages six weeks to four years is provided from 8:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Nursery (downstairs in the church s annex building). Children s Chapel is offered during the first part of the 9 a.m. service for children from ages three to six. The children leave the nave during the sequence hymn following behind the cross which will come down the aisle and then go into the downstairs annex classroom with the children rejoining their parents at the Peace. Adult Formation is also offered during the 10:15 a.m. to 11 a.m. hour. The Seekers book study group meets in the administrative building. We also offer adult forums in the new building s Fellowship Hall periodically during this formation time period. COMMUNION All are welcome to receive bread and wine during communion, including children. To receive bread, place your hands palms-up at the communion rail. To receive wine, assist the Eucharistic Minister in guiding the chalice to your lips, or you may intinct by dipping the bread in the wine. If you do not wish to receive the bread or wine, place your arms across your chest to receive a blessing. Gluten-free wafers are available. Indicate your request by first extending your hands palms down when at the communion rail. The square wafers are kept in a separate holder, and you are invited to take one from this holder. WORSHIP SERVICES Worship services at St. Margaret s occur on Sundays at 7:30 a.m. (Rite I spoken service), and 9 a.m. & 11:15 a.m. (Rite II with music). We also have a Wednesday morning service at 7:30 a.m. in the administrative reception room. The Liturgy is from the Book of Common Prayer and the music from the Hymnal 1982, Wonder, Love, and Praise, and Voices Found" or as otherwise noted. Almighty God, you have set before us numerous stories of prophets and sages that at one time were forced to flee from their homes in order to build your kingdom in this world. Help us to realize that when we speak of immigrants and refugees, we are really speaking of your son, Jesus Christ. The One, who like millions today, had no place to lay his head, and who felt unwelcome in his homeland. We ask you, O God, to open our minds and hearts to the challenge brought by the current refugee crisis, and to help us welcome the stranger in our midst with radical love and hospitality. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. 3

4 FIRST LESSON Deuteronomy 24:17-22 A reading from the book of Deuteronomy. You shall not deprive a resident alien or an orphan of justice; you shall not take a widow s garment in pledge. Remember that you were a slave in Egypt and the Lord your God redeemed you from there; therefore I command you to do this. When you reap your harvest in your field and forget a sheaf in the field, you shall not go back to get it; it shall be left for the alien, the orphan, and the widow, so that the Lord your God may bless you in all your undertakings. When you beat your olive trees, do not strip what is left; it shall be for the alien, the orphan, and the widow. When you gather the grapes of your vineyard, do not glean what is left; it shall be for the alien, the orphan, and the widow. SECOND READING 2 Corinthians 6:1-3 A reading from Paul's second letter to the Corinthians. As we work together with Christ, we urge you also not to accept the grace of God in vain. For he says, At an acceptable time I have listened to you, and on a day of salvation I have helped you. See, now is the acceptable time; see, now is the day of salvation! We are putting no obstacle in anyone's way, so that no fault may be found with our ministry, but as servants of God we have commended ourselves in every way: through great endurance, in afflictions, hardships, calamities, beatings, imprisonments, riots, labors, sleepless nights, hunger; by purity, knowledge, patience, kindness, holiness of spirit, genuine love, truthful speech, and the power of God; with the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and for the left; in honor and dishonor, in ill repute and good repute. We are treated as impostors, and yet are true; as unknown, and yet are well known; as dying, and see-- we are alive; as punished, and yet not killed; as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing everything. We have spoken frankly to you Corinthians; our heart is wide open to you. There is no restriction in our affections, but only in yours. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me. Then the righteous will answer him, Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink? And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing? And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you? And the king will answer them, Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me. Then he will say to those at his left hand, You that are accursed, depart from me into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not give me clothing, sick and in prison and you did not visit me. Then they also will answer, Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not take care of you? 7 NICENE CREED and We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Joel Nafuma Refugee Center Leader Grant, Almighty God, that as we join together in prayer, we remember your word, which bids us to love the stranger who dwells among you for you were strangers in the Land of Egypt. God, help us to welcome the strangers in our midst. Leader We pray for all those who flee oppression and persecution in their homeland only to find desperation and loneliness in a foreign land. God, help us to welcome the strangers in our midst. 7

8 Leader We pray for churches, as well as other faith-based and secular organizations who work tirelessly to support the strangers in our midst. God, help us to welcome the strangers in our midst. Leader We pray for all countries struggling to accommodate refugees. We pray for strong leadership in guiding these nations to welcome and integrate our brothers and sisters from across the globe. God, help us to welcome the strangers in our midst. Leader We pray that our community of St. Margaret's will continue to embrace and support disenfranchised persons, and that our ministry may serve as an inspiration for other parishes looking to serve the helpless and the needy. God, help us to welcome the strangers in our midst. Leader Comfort and heal all those who suffer in body, mind, or spirit; give them courage and hope in their troubles, and bring them the joy of your salvation. We remember especially... And we pray for those who have died and their loved ones, especially... We pray for all those whom it would be easy for us to neglect. We pray for the homeless and the poor, the old and the sick. We pray for those who have no home, and those who find themselves strangers in a foreign land. God, help us to welcome the strangers in our midst. Almighty God, make us instruments of your peace. Help us to create welcoming and hospitable communities in your kingdom. Help us to overcome the fear and anxiety we feel towards those who we perceive to be different from us. Give us the courage and wisdom to create compassionate and just immigration policies, and grant that we may all live together in peace and love. We ask all this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, in whom we live and move and have our being. Amen. CONFESSION OF SINS Archdiocese of Melbourne Let us be still and listen to the voice of God in our hearts. The people may kneel or stand as able. 8

9 and We confess that we have produced words of judgement that may have caused another pain; have made compromises that fragmented truth; had complacency that may have permitted hopelessness to replace hope in the heart of another; had apathy that may have stilled words and actions for justice in the lives of another. We confess that as a community there may have been times when we have failed to accept the stranger in our street have not welcomed the other ; have not offered a hand of acceptance and a smile of trust. We confess that as a congregation there may have been times when we have not always been true to the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth, have not always walked in his footsteps and loved our neighbor as we love ourselves, have not practiced the biblical gift of hospitality, and have closed the door in the face of another. Hear these words of forgiveness and assurance: God forgives us and creates in us a new heart to build communities founded on acceptance and tolerance. God forgives us and fills us anew with love so that we build a congregation that lives out the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth, our Risen Lord. God will strengthen us to build a future together that embraces the other and the stranger at our door to live with gentleness and generosity, always aware of the needs of others, seeking always to put the other first. An offering of gifts is collected, and along with the bread and wine, they are presented to God as thanksgiving for the blessings poured out onto us. Like millions of people today, your son was a refugee, a migrant travelling on foot and by boat to foreign lands. He relied on the hospitality of strangers, and was met with skepticism, doubt and eventually, death. He died for us that we may live anew. Through his life and sacrifice, we now understand that it is through loving that we are loved, and it is through welcoming the stranger in our midst that we begin to fully welcome the stranger that is our true self. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: SANCTUS American Folk melody 10

11 The continues Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us all of us for yourself. You sent us your son Jesus Christ, a model migrant, who offered us everything and asked for nothing. He walked dusty paths to make known your Word, to proclaim pardon and forgiveness, and to announce the good news of liberation to the poor. On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, Which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. God, in this memorial of pardon and forgiveness we celebrate the wonder of your love, and we offer you this bread and this wine. SENDING FORTH OF EUCHARISTIC VISITORS On most Sundays, we send out Eucharistic visitors to deliver the sacraments to those who cannot be with us. This is the prayer we use to send them on their way. In the name of this congregation I send you forth bearing these holy gifts, to N. that they may share with us in the sacrament of our Savior Jesus Christ. We who are many are One Body, because we all share one Bread, and one Cup. Amen.
