2 Twenty-third Sunday after Pentecost October 28, 2018 Welcome to St. Mark s Lutheran Church & School In the name of our Savior, Jesus Christ, we welcome you to St. Mark s. We especially welcome our guests who have joined us today. We pray you will be strengthened by the good news about God s grace, love, and forgiveness to us through Jesus. ASSISTANCE FOR YOUNG FAMILIES: o o o A staffed nursery is located in the back of the church lobby. A privacy room, especially reserved for nursing mothers, is located on the east side of the church entryway. Activity sheets for children can be picked up on the Information Center s shelf in the church lobby. HEARING AND READING ASSISTANCE: o o Personal hearing assistance devices are available on the entryway wall near the sanctuary s west entrance door. The sanctuary is also looped for those who have hearing aids that can pick up the signal. We also have LARGE PRINT service booklets that you can pick up on the shelf under the Information Center bulletin board in the church lobby CONNECTING WITH EACH OTHER: o A connection card has been handed to you by one of the ushers. Please complete the appropriate side of the card and pass it toward the center aisle to the usher at the end of the offering. 2

3 THE ORDER OF WORSHIP Worship Focus: Would you say you manage your life well? Would you say you are a good witness for the Christ? Would you say you are a willing participant when it comes to helping others? There are days when we do well in all three of these areas, and then there are days Are you satisfied with less than 100%? A more important question to ask ourselves is God satisfied with less than our 100%? He is not into excuses, as we are reminded of today. Yet, our God is a gracious God. We will explore both aspects of God and what such means for us day to day. 4 LORD, HAVE MERCY ~ Kyrie M: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. 6 God, our refuge and strength, have mercy on your Church, as we come in prayer before you. Answer us not in judgment on our sins, but in peace and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. 7 WORD FIRST LESSON Exodus 4:1-17 Jesus is God. Every ability, for good, comes from God. We are without excuse when we refuse to put His given to us abilities to work. 1 Then Moses answered, But behold, they will not believe me or listen to my voice, for they will say, The LORD did not appear to you. 2 The LORD said to him, What is that in your hand? He said, A staff. 3 And he said, Throw it on the ground. So he threw it on the ground, and it became a serpent, and Moses ran from it. 4 But the LORD said to Moses, Put out your hand and catch it by the tail so he put out his hand and caught it, and it became a staff in his hand 5 that they may believe that the LORD, the God of their fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has appeared to you. 6 Again, the LORD said to him, Put your hand inside your cloak. And he put his hand inside his cloak, and when he took it out, behold, his hand was leprous like snow. 7 Then God said, Put your hand back inside your cloak. So he put his hand back inside his cloak, and when he took it out, behold, it was restored like the rest of his flesh. 8 Then the LORD said, If they do not believe you or pay attention to the first sign, they may believe the second. 9 But if they do not believe these two signs or listen to you, take some water from the Nile and pour it on the dry ground. The water you take from the river will become blood on the ground. 10 Moses said to the LORD, Pardon your servant, Lord. I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant. I am slow of speech and tongue. 11 The LORD said to him, Who gave human beings their mouths? Who makes them deaf or mute? Who gives them sight or makes them blind? Is it not I, the LORD? 12 Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say. 13 But Moses said, Pardon your servant, Lord. Please send someone else. 14 Then the LORD s anger burned against Moses and he said, What about your brother, Aaron the Levite? I know he can speak well. He is already on his way to meet you, and he will be glad to see you. 15 You shall speak to him and put words in his mouth; I will help both of you speak and will teach you what to do. 16 He will speak to the people for you, and it will be as if he were your mouth and as if you were God to him. 17 But take this staff in your hand so you can perform the signs with it. 7

9 SECOND LESSON Acts 2:22-32 Jesus is the Christ. The proof is in His death and resurrection. 22 Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know 23 this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. 24 God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it. 25 For David says concerning him, I saw the Lord always before me, for he is at my right hand that I may not be shaken; 26 therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced; my flesh also will dwell in hope. 27 For you will not abandon my soul to Hades, or let your Holy One see corruption. 28 You have made known to me the paths of life; you will make me full of gladness with your presence. 29 Brothers, I may say to you with confidence about the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. 30 Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants on his throne, 31 he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption. 32 This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses. VERSE OF THE DAY 2 Timothy 4:18 ALL: Alleluia. The Lord will rescue me from every evil and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. Alleluia. PLEASE STAND GOSPEL Mark 10:46-52 Jesus is the Messiah. The proof is found in His actions. 46 And they came to Jericho. And as he was leaving Jericho with his disciples and a great crowd, Bartimaeus, a blind beggar, the son of Timaeus, was sitting by the roadside. 47 And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me! 48 And many rebuked him, telling him to be silent. But he cried out all the more, Son of David, have mercy on me! 49 And Jesus stopped and said, Call him. And they called the blind man, saying to him, Take heart. Get up; he is calling you. 50 And throwing off his cloak, he sprang up and came to Jesus. 51 And Jesus said to him, What do you want me to do for you? And the blind man said to him, Rabbi, let me recover my sight. 52 And Jesus said to him, Go your way; your faith has made you well. And immediately he recovered his sight and followed him on the way. 9

10 APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Older children, parents, or other family members may come forward to encourage the younger children s participation. 12 PRAYER OF THE CHURCH M: O Lord, our God, you are wise and powerful, good and gracious. Your mercies are new every morning. Each day you open your hand and provide for the needs of your children on earth. C: We praise you for every grace and blessing. M: Strengthen your Church in all the world. Let your comforting message of salvation in Christ Jesus be proclaimed to troubled souls everywhere. C: Use our ministries and offerings to extend your healing and your hope. M: We bring you our requests for the various structures of our society. Bless our national, state (provincial), and local governments. C: Grant us civil servants who are worthy of honor and respect. M: Grant prosperity to our businesses and industries. Give employers a sense of fairness toward their workers, and employees a feeling of joy and pride in their workmanship. C: Help us find satisfaction in all work well done. M: Invigorate the schools of our land. Give success to every effort that helps students read, think, and communicate in ways that will promote an informed and responsible citizenry. Arouse curious minds to discover the wonders of your created order. C: Give us teachers and students who pursue excellence. M: Strengthen the families of our country. Give fathers and mothers a renewed commitment to be good parents. Give children and young people the wisdom to regard their parents as your representatives. C: Lead us to love one another as you have loved us. Special prayers and intercessions may follow. M: Hear us, Lord, as we bring you our private petitions. Silent prayer. M: Gracious Father, we pray boldly as Jesus taught, with the confidence that you will hear and with the faith that you will respond for our welfare. Amen. 12

13 LORD S PRAYER Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen. 14 For Reflection based on Today s Scripture Readings... How did Moses end up where he was located when God gave him this assignment? Why was Moses hesitant to do as the Lord directed him? How did the Lord answer Moses with each excuse? What does the Lord ask us to do? How has the Lord equipped you to do what He asks? Read 1 Corinthians 12. Tell someone what proves Jesus did exist and was not an ordinary human being? What would you say is Jesus greatest accomplishment, and why do you say this? What is your role when it comes to the faith in Jesus you have been given? Read Isaiah 53 slowly. What did the blind man expect of Jesus? What did this man refer to as his confidence Jesus could and would help him? Did this man s faith bring about his healing? How does this account impact our approach to God in prayer? Read Psalm
