The Voice of Monroe Street United Methodist Church a Beacon and a Bridge for our community January 2018 Looking Ahead The days are short and the nights are long. When I walk my dog, Tobey, we stop every thirty seconds so he can clean snow and salt out of his delicate paws. It is turtleneck season for those of us who love turtlenecks. Yet we are working hard preparing for our 2018 Freedom School, which begins on June 18, just five months from now. Our first task is to raise the money to fund Freedom School. Rae Lynn Schleif, the Assistant to the Superintendent in the Maumee Watershed District, is asking our United Methodist church partners to provide scholarships once again for Freedom School scholars. The Maumee Watershed District gave us a generous gift. Clara Petty is reaching out to some churches who are not familiar with Freedom School. We raised money for Freedom School at the Neighborhood Center Gala. In December we met with Keith Burwell, President of the Toledo Community Foundation. He gave us advice about how to apply for funds from the Foundation and directed us to other resources in the community. We will approach the Mud Hens and ask them to finance a new playground. Over time, we hope that church and community groups and businesses will provide inkind gifts, such as classroom supplies and books for the library. Five of our Servant Leader Interns are returning to Freedom School - Marcus Clark, Kenya James, Kathleen Johnson, Sydney Petty, and Mike Polk. (Maeve McBride, who taught our Level III students, is taking summer school classes at Dartmouth this year.) This month we will begin the process of hiring a sixth Servant Leader Intern, who will serve as a floater and support all of the classes. We also hope to hire five high school students to be full-time classroom assistants, paying them a small stipend. One of our most faithful volunteers, Annie Mintun, wants to return this summer after she graduates from high school to be one of these assistants. Our teaching team will be very strong. They already have relationships with many of the scholars and families; they know the cheers and chants and the motivational song; they can teach the Integrated Reading Curriculum. Our Servant Leader Interns can help us plan our enrichment activities and our field trips, since most of them live in Toledo. We are hiring a new Site Coordinator to mentor and supervise the Servant Leader Interns and to work with the families. We began interviewing candidates in late December, and hope to hire one of them this month. Once our staff is in place, we will work together with church and community friends to develop our enrichment program and our field trips. We will have enough time to create 1
creative, educational, age-appropriate activities for our scholars. What ideas for enrichment do you have? Last summer we took field trips to the Toledo Zoo, Imagination Station, the Toledo Art Museum, and to Camp Widewater. Do you have other suggestions for field trips? For example, could we tour the University of Toledo, or take the children to a museum in Detroit? As we do this holy work, we are also seeking to maintain relationships with the Freedom School scholars and their families. Outreach events such as Trunk or Treat and the Advent Breakfast and Workshop gave us opportunities to reconnect. In February and March we will invite our older Freedom School scholars to read the book A Wrinkle in Time and then get together in small groups to discuss it. We will watch the movie together when it is released in theaters in March. Please join us! As we do this holy work, God s joyful, loving Spirit encourages us and guides us. Please pray for our Freedom School community, that the life we share together might reflect God s kingdom promises for us. 3 Why I can t be a Centrist I have been approached to be supportive of the efforts of the Centrist movement in the United Methodist Church. The goal, as I understand it, is to provide a way for the United Methodist Church to stay together by providing people of diverse beliefs to faithfully live out their faith. The primary issue is how the church understands human sexuality. I am a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church, and I will not voluntarily leave it. Yet, I find myself in full opposition to the church s official positions concerning LGBTQ persons. I pray that the church finds a way forward that will be faithful to its roots in social justice and religious piety. And I pray that it finds a direction that enables it to be the diverse worldwide church that God calls us to be. While in seminary, I was encouraged to follow the issue of homosexuality in our class on the General Conference. While hesitant at first, I read, studied and talked to gay and lesbian persons. It became clear to me that the church s position was unscientific, prejudicial, and used scripture in a manipulative way that was doing great harm. At the age of twenty-five I went to the 1980 General Conference full of optimism that the delegates would respond to reasoned, thoughtful information and that the church s negative stance toward gay and lesbian persons would change. I left General Conference discouraged that nothing changed, but I remained hopeful that change would come at the next General Conference. Instead, I watched as the United Methodist Church not only did not change its stance, but added even more negative and restrictive language. I went to several more General Conferences to advocate for a new understanding of human sexuality and a full inclusion of sexual minority persons in the church. At one point, I was supportive of language that would say that we were not of one mind on matters of human sexuality and therefore allow for some individual and congregational discretion. However, I can no longer even support this. I cannot support any position of the church that in any way suggests that it is OK for Christians to hold prejudicial, discriminatory, and homophobic attitudes and actions toward our sisters and brothers who may identify as being LGBTQ. I liken any compromise on this to be analogous to a church that permitted slavery while some opposed it, or a church that denied full clergy rights to women while supporting women. Scripture has been used to support slavery and the subjection of women. And I would argue that there is far more scripture that could be used in support of those positions than the couple of passages that are used to condemn our LGBTQ folks. I find the Centrist movement, while well-meaning, failing to address the sin, not of our LGBTQ friends, but of those who condemn them. Each January, at the celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. s birthday, I reread the Letter from a Birmingham Jail, one of the greatest pieces of literature of the 20 th century. He addresses the letter to the mainline moderate clergy who seek to find compromise rather than stand firmly for justice. He writes: I must make two honest confessions to you, my Christian and Jewish brothers. First, I must confess that over the past few years I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Councilor or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace 3
which is the presence of justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season." Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection. I hope I am not too unkind, but I believe to be part of the Centrist movement would put me in the same place as the Christian and Jewish brothers to whom Dr. King addressed his comments. I believe that the only truly Christian position is to fully embrace our brothers and sisters who have a sexual orientation or identity different from the majority. To do anything else is a failure of love. It is to put us on the wrong side of science and of history. And I believe it is a failure to be a faithful disciple of Jesus Christ. Pastor Larry Searcher-Advent Class Beginning January 7, the Searcher- Advent class will begin a 4-week overview of the mission study, Living as a Covenant Community by Evy McDonald. Led by Marilyn DuFour, the study will explore how six biblical covenants guided the establishment of a relationship between God and God s people. It will provide an opportunity to consider how the fears, crises, demands, worship, and praises of the biblical covenant community are mirrored in our own lives and how the covenant relationship with God and God s covenant community are alive and flourishing today. This study was the spiritual growth study for Mission U in All are welcome to join the class in the chapel on Sunday mornings at 9:00 a.m. Parables Class The Parables Class resumes on Sunday, January 7, at 9:00 a.m. in Meeting Room 1 after a Christmas hiatus. We will resume our reading and discussion of The Bible Tells Me So by Peter Enns. Worlds of Belief The Worlds of Belief UnSunday School Class will visit the exhibit Glorious Splendor: Treasures of Early Christian Art at the Toledo Museum of Art (TMA) on Sunday, January 21. We will begin at 1:15 p.m. at Lynne Hamer s house, at 2018 Parkside (½ mile from the church and on way to the museum). Karen Vollmer, docent for the TMA and MSUMC member, will give a brief talk about the exhibit during lunch Please mark your calendars, and call Lynne at or lynne.hamer@utoledo.edu to RSVP or for more information. If there is a Level 2 or 3 Snow Emergency, we will of course cancel that date and postpone the gathering for one week to January 13, same time and same place. All women are welcome. Please notify either Betty Nicolen or Kathy Moore by noon on January 5 if you are coming and if you are bringing a guest. We pray that Advent has been a blessing to each one of you. 5
Happy 2018 to Our Church Community from Leadership Team The Leadership Team is making preparations to start the New Year wrestling with questions: What is God calling Monroe Street Church to be and do? What is God doing here? How can we best follow God s lead in 2018? We invite our Monroe Streeters, near and far, to join in a dedicated time of prayer each week for our church and Neighborhood Center as we look to our 200 th anniversary of ministry in just 7 years. Thessalonians 3:12 - May the Lord make your love increase and overflow for each other and for everyone else, just as ours does for you. "To You, With Love Dinner Theater Saturday, February 10, 2018 Seating begins at 5:45 p.m. Come and eat a delicious meal and listen to members of the Wesleyan Chorus, Intergenerational Choir, and Cantabile sing and play songs of love. Contact Gwen Senerius at or redsoprano2275@yahoo.com, or Denise Mathias at , ext.230 or dmathias@monroestreetchurch.org. Congregational Care A huge thank you to everyone who donated cookies for our homebound members, and to everyone who helped deliver them. There was a good variety and we brought cookies to about 22 people at home and to seven staff members. We continue to reach out with phone calls and contacts to members we have not seen for some time. Lenten Book Study Lou D Amato will be offering a 9-week Saturday morning book study beginning on January 13 at 10:30 a.m. The book is A Bigger Table: Building a Messy, Authentic, and Hopeful Spiritual Community by John Pavlovitz. The price of the book is about $18, and one will be provided for you if needed. Please check with Lou if you are interested. Greetings from The Neighborhood Center December has been a busy month with all the holiday parties and community events. The Center hosted its annual volunteer luncheon at The Black Pearl on Wednesday, December 13. We are so appreciative of our volunteers who really are the heart of our organization. We held our annual community luncheon on Tuesday, December 19. We served a hot lunch and gave away over 80 gifts. Can you believe it is time to prepare for Adventure Camp and Freedom School? We are hard at work putting things in place as we get ready to register our families in the coming months. If you have any gently used games we will be collecting them in February for our summer programs. May God continue to bless you as we move into this new year. Clara L. Petty Executive Director 6
Communion Offering Supports Alternative Spring Break The First Sunday Communion Offering for January, February and March will again support Toledo Campus Ministry s Alternative Spring Break. This year, TCM will be offering groups of mentors and students three opportunities and locations to be in mission: Poverty Immersion Experience in Toledo, Ohio with Steve North of LifeLine Toledo. Participants will meaningfully and relationally engage with people who live in poverty and homelessness on their turf and on their terms. Mission Work in Paintsville, Kentucky with Christian Appalachian Program (CAP). Participants will paint, make modest repairs, clean, play with the children and build friendships. Hurricane Relief in Houston, Texas with Presbyterian Disaster Assistance. Participants will clean out and prepare homes for renovation, rebuild structures and do whatever else needs to be done. Applications were still being accepted as of The Voice deadline so more details will be available in the coming months. Participants in Alternative Spring Break are being asked to pay a subsidized rate of $200 or $300 for the mission trip, depending on the location. The Communion Offering will help to provide the subsidy and scholarships for students who would like to participate in Alternative Spring Break but need financial assistance. Any money given in excess of what is needed supports the Rev. Dee Baker Mission Fund and helps to make future mission trips possible. This event is the community building, spiritual formation and service highlight of the school year. Please give generously. Palm Sunday Concert Rehearsals Starting Calling all singers would you like to have the opportunity to sing Verdi this year? Well, you can! Sing in the Palm Sunday Chorus we are performing the Four Sacred Pieces by Verdi in this year s Palm Sunday Concert. Rehearsals begin Saturday, January 20 at 9:30 a.m. For more information contact Lou D Amato, Ldamato419@aol.com or Trustees Update At the December meeting the Trustees voted to have the original parsonage, built in 1925, demolished and removed. This work will be completed sometime in the early spring and will really open up the entry to the church from Circle Drive. In recent years, the old parsonage has been used by the Neighborhood Center for Bridge House operations, but all of these activities have recently been moved into the education wing of the church. Most of the funds needed for this project will come from the existing parsonage maintenance fund which contains about $10,000. These funds no longer need to be held in reserve since the Drummond Road parsonage has been sold. Also, removing the old parsonage will reduce annual church expenses by about $4,000 which is the yearly cost of taxes, insurance and utilities for the structure. Plaster repair and painting is being completed on two stairways and in the main room of the Murphey Youth Center on the third floor of the education wing. This work has been needed for some time and really brightens up the areas under repair. The deadline for the February issue of The Voice is Sunday, January 21 Please send articles to Barbara Coleman at babc1743@sbcglobal.net 7
