1 2016 thank offering of Presbyterian Women How precious is your steadfast love, O God! SINKING SPRING PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Women s Beekeeping Enterprise Luwerezi, Malawi The Luwerezi Women s Beekeeping Enterprise is one of 22 recipients of grants funded by the 2015 Thank Offering of Presbyterian Women. Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church in Abingdon, Virginia; Abingdon Presbytery; and the Luwerezi Church of Central Africa Presbyterian, in Luwerezi, Malawi, will use Presbyterian Women s Thank Offering grant of $20,000 to support a beekeeping project that focuses on providing a business opportunity for widows and their families that will help the families escape chronic poverty. The Sinking Spring and Luwerezi churches have worked in a sister congregation relationship since October 2013, and together endorse and support this beekeeping project. Funds from their grant will be used to provide necessary equipment and supplies, training and administrative oversite for new beekeepers. Beekeeping has a strong market potential to reduce poverty; this project seeks to serve 50 families, headed by widows with children, generating income from the sales of honey and beeswax. Please join your Presbyterian sisters and brothers by giving generously to the Thank Offering of Presbyterian Women.
2 How precious is your steadfast love, O God! About the Thank Offering The Thank Offering supports new and creative projects that meet the needs of people who are elderly, disabled, homeless or displaced, as well as children, youth and women, through educational, health, peace and justice programs, both and in the United States and abroad. At least 40 percent of Thank Offering gifts fund health ministries. Grant recipients are chosen by the Creative Ministries Offering Committee of Presbyterian Women in the spring of each year, from among dozens of applicants. Presbyterian women have been making grants to creative ministries through the Thank Offering since 1888 when Eliza Clokey of Springfield, Ohio, urged each woman to give one dollar over and above her usual contribution to the Women s General Missionary Society of the United Presbyterian Church of North America as a thank offering to our Lord. The gifts represented much soul-searching and self-sacrifice on the part of many women. The impact was immeasurable. It has been said that women s giving saved the worldwide missionary movement at that time. A thank offering to our Lord continued to be an important part of women s giving by United Presbyterian Women in the United Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. This expression of thanksgiving is now an important part of Presbyterian Women s Celebration Giving program. Women (and men) continue to give sacrificially and with much soul-searching; since 1888, Presbyterian women have granted support to literally thousands of ministries worldwide and raised millions of dollars for mission. Give now so more life-changing projects can be funded in The goal for this offering is $900,000. The 2016 Thank Offering grant recipients are funded from the 2015 offering. 3 2016 thank offering of Presbyterian Women How precious is your steadfast love, O God! HARAMBEE CHICAGO Harambee Chicago Summer Program Chicago, Illinois The Harambee Chicago Summer Program is one of 22 recipients of grants funded by the 2015 Thank Offering of Presbyterian Women. The Harambee Chicago Summer Program will use Presbyterian Women s Thank Offering grant of $15,000 to increase the hard and soft employment skills of low-income youth by engaging them in community service, providing economic opportunity through exposure to a skilled trade and developing deep mentoring relationships with local community leaders. To Kenyans, harambee means all pull together. The Harambee Chicago Summer Program helps communities all pull together by engaging youth in community service. The program trains low-income youth from singleparent families to develop the skill of tuckpointing. Tuckpointing is a technique used to repair and enhance the appearance of aging bricks. Once brick walls have been tuckpointed, they do not leak and they look beautiful. Youth in the program spend six weeks of the summer practicing the art/skill of tuckpointing by providing this service to low-income homeowners in their own neighborhoods. They also learn interview and communication skills that can help lead to future employment. The young people earn a stipend while they participate in this program. Please join your Presbyterian sisters and brothers by giving generously to the Thank Offering of Presbyterian Women.

5 2016 thank offering of Presbyterian Women How precious is your steadfast love, O God! PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN OF FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, FORT WORTH/ LIVING WATER INTERNATIONAL Water Well Drilling Rig for Haiti Fort Worth, Texas Presbyterian Women of FPC Fort Worth is one of 22 recipients of grants funded by the 2015 Thank Offering of Presbyterian Women. The PW group will use PW s Thank Offering grant of $40,250 will be used toward the purchase of a drilling rig for use in Haiti by Living Water International. Imagine the lives of rural mothers who walk two hours each day to bring home the daily supply of water for their respective families. The water is usually dirty, polluted and foul often causing their children to suffer from an array of water-related diseases. At least 36 percent of the 10.4 million people who live in Haiti lack access to clean water. Waterborne diseases are a major cause of infant mortality and illnesses in the general population. The main goal of this project is to provide sustainable access to clean water for Haitian women and their families. Presbyterian Women of First Presbyterian Church, Fort Worth seeks to match funds pledged by other Presbyterians to purchase the rig. This purchase means that Living Water International will be able to dig 20 new wells a year for a fiveyear period. Each well serves an average of 400 people. One hundred wells will mean clean water for about 40,000 women, men and children. The sustainable, safe water and the hygiene training provided by LWI will help prevent diseases and lead to better living. Please join your Presbyterian sisters and brothers by giving generously to the Thank Offering of Presbyterian Women.
