1 From the Principal s desk Greetings from Carlile College, Nairobi Kenya. The Lord has been faithful to us since the year 2017 began. The College offices opened on 3/1/2017 and the staff had several planning meetings before the students reported as from 7/1/2017. Carlile College as a ministry of Church Army Africa trains for the church and also in professional skills for the job market. The college has two departments namely: School of Mission (SOM) and Church Army Business School (CABS). Vision and Mission strategy: Rev.Capt.Patience Wanzala Principal - Carlile College The education at Carlile College is tightly hinged to the H.E.A.L Africa Vision of CAA. This education is motivated by the desire and intention to contribute to the transformation of Africa that is faced with a number of problems ranging from illiteracy, poverty, diseases, conflicts and injustices. Through the missions and business schools, Carlile College strives to offer a holistic education which empowers Evangelists and church leaders to be the proclaimers of the Gospel as well as equip them with technical and professional skills. The graduands from CABS are not only equipped with technical and professional skills, but also discipled and mentored around the word of God. Through this holistic training, the students from both schools are inculcated with the knowledge and skills that enables them to contribute to the transformation of African Society thereby realizing the HEAL agenda. 2 SCHOOL OF MISSIONS - FROM THE DEAN Rev. Dr. Danson Kihwaga Dean - School of Mission Students and staff reported back early in the term and learning resumed immediately. We drew the term s teaching time tables and carried out respective new term orientations for both staff and students. The School of Mission (SOM) runs five programs which offer students with training in ministry skills for the church in Africa. These programs are: 1. Certificate in Christian Mission done within a duration of one year divided into three trimesters and is offered on a part time basis, evening classes and on Saturdays. 2. Diploma in Christian Mission (DCM) with cross-cultural and urban mission courses offered within a duration of two academic years taken in trimester mode per year on full time basis. 3. Diploma in Christian Ministry and Civic Responsibilities(DCM- CR) within a duration of one and a quarter years taken in trimester mode per year conducted in the evenings and on Saturdays. 4. Diploma in Christian Ministry- School Chaplaincy(DCMSC) within a duration of two academic years and offered through a school based programme mode; April, August and December. 5. Diploma in Children and Family Ministry (DCFM) within a duration of two academic years and offered through open and distance learning mode. Exams and intensives are conducted in May and November of each year. There are three DCM classes out of the five groups of students who are in different terms; two DCMCR classes and one CCM class. We are now in the eighth week of our teaching schedule for this term. The following is our enrollment status to date; a) DCM 32 b) DCMCR 22 c) CCM 13 d) DCFM 12 e) DCMSC 19 TOTAL 98 We intend to increase enrollment in the course of the year by reaching out to potential students in various Parishes and local churches; providing short courses at Carlile College and participating in missions among other strategies. Territorial Mapping (Marketing) The principal and dean SOM have so far visited several Dioceses namely: Kajiado, Machakos, Mt. Kenya South, Murang a South, All Saints, Mt. kenya Central and Thika. We also expect to see the bishop of the Diocese of Nairobi the soonest we secure an appointment. The purpose of the visits has been to popularize the SOM programmes and also improve our relationships with the neighboring ACK Dioceses and begin to partner with them in the areas of training and mission. Some of them have promised to consider recommending students to SOM for training among the Provincial theological colleges. New Programmes As the director of the academic affairs, I have recommended and done the ground-work for launching the following new programmes: a) DCM-Modular Mode: We have noted the need to introduce a DCM modular programme. Thus in a SOM curriculum committee meeting held on 3rd, Feb. 2017, the committee members resolved to expand the DCMCR curriculum. Consequently, 12 more units were added to the DCMCR curriculum translating into two more terms. Thus, the new DCMCR becomes the DCM modular programme with 6 terms instead of the initial 4. Following the resolution by committee members that Dean SOM restructures the curriculum, this has been done. He is now waiting for the lecturers to submit their teaching notes so as to begin preparing the learning modules. b) CCM Modular Mode: The committee members also resolved that there should be a CCM modular programme. Thus, the Dean SOM is also engaged in the process of preparing the modules for the CCM modular programme. c) Short Courses: Finally, the SOM curriculum committee members resolved that Carlile College should also offer short courses as a marketing strategy. Various tutors were assigned the responsibility of writing short courses covering various topics which were identified as relevant. d) Chaplaincy Curriculum: We completed writing the proposed new chaplaincy curriculum draft, and presented it to Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD). We are still awaiting some feedback from there on the expected workshop to assess the contents so as to ascertain their usefulness and quality as well as compliance to general curriculum writing procedures.

3 Rev.Elkana Osiru CCE Cordinator Education at your doorstep The Centre for Continuing Education compliments the School of Mission by ensuring that there is continuity of particularly theological and mission studies within the main campus and at satellite centres in Kenya and abroad. This centre is tasked with the responsibility of ensuring that those students who are unable to attend studies on full time in the main campus have the opportunity to study through modular programs. Our philosophy at the Centre is to take theological education to the people in a more contextualized manner and in ways that are more convinient to our target groups. Through this program we partner with various groups such as; The Anglican Dioceses in the Province of Kenya, The Church of Uganda & The Church of Malawi. Our programs include; Diploma in Christian Mission and Civic Responsibilities (DCMCR) which is a two-year program. The programs targets Lay ministers of the church and community leaders. Our emphasis under the program is to equip such people with knowledge in Civic and religious matters from a christian mission perspective. They then become more effective agents of transformation in their communities (offered in modular and evening classes) Our second program Diploma in Chaplaincy (DCMSC). This Diploma targets school chaplains, school teachers with a passion of ministry and youth workers particularly in church settings. It provides training in pastoral care, discipleship and evangelism in the context of primary and secondary schools (offered on school based, 2 weeks intensive in April, August and December for 2 years). Our third program under the centre is the Diploma in Children and Family Ministry (DCFM). This program equips those involved in children s ministries and those who minister to families with a strong foundation in evangelism and discipleship for the transformation of the children and families of Africa. The program runs for 2 years and comprises of 72 credit hours using the intensives and distance learning model (2 weeks intensive twice per year in May and November). We also offer 1 year certificate courses in Religious studies as means of bridging for those candidates who do not meet the minimum requirements for Diploma courses. Besides that we offer short term courses in; Evangelism, transformational leadership, stewardship and other of ministerial formation courses. CCE has also collaborated with the Anglican church of Kenya in Theological Education by Extension programs in Kenya. This collaboration ensures that Theological Education is taken to the people at their local settings so as to ensure that every Christian is engaged in studying the word of God. We provide materials and oversight to the Dioceses that have already partnered with us in the programs. We are flexible and reachable and willing to work with you.below is a summary of what we are doing. 4 CHURCH ARMY BUSINESS SCHOOL - C.A.BS Church Army Business School is one of the two schools of Carlile College. The school prides itself of an excellent and highly professional staff team in a serene Christian environment. The school s physical and build environment is ideal for a study in a relaxed way with plenty of bandas where students can hold discussions and relax as they wait for their next classes. The Church Army Business School (CABS) focuses on training mostly young professionals. The purpose is to offer training on market driven courses within a Christian environment wherechristian values are inculcated through both educational and character formation of individual students. The School was designed to provide students of Mission studies with space and audience for the practical engagement in mission. Rev.Capt. Barack Oluoch Dean - Church Army Business School This school offers the following courses in diploma and certificate levels andall are taught through full time and part-time basis. a. Business and Management Studies b. Social Studies- Community Development and Social Work c. Information Communication Technology d. Hospitality e. Technical Studies f. KCSE Tutorials The examining bodies for these courses are both local and foreign. They are Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC), and The Kenya Accountants and Secretaries National Examination Board (KASNEB). While the foreign bodies are Association of Business Executive (ABE-UK), Institute of Commercial Management (ICM), Association of Business Management and Administrators(ABMA) and The Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supplies (CIPS). The school is founded on Christian principles and values, making it ideal for training students for transformation. The 21 st century market thirsts for graduates who can approach the market place with solutions rather than questions as there are already so many questions being asked. The school endeavors to churn out competent and qualified graduates who make relevant contribution to the job market. All these departments have a total of 503 students as at 28th February This number is on a steady increase as more students see the school as their preferred school of choice. Both day and evening classes are offered in the school alongside short courses in different disciplines. Our examination bodies include KASNEB, KNEC, ICM, ABE, NITA and ACCA (being re-introduced in 2017). The high school has registered a total of 143 candidates for 2017 KCSE Examinations, a remarkable improvement from 2016 where 128 candidates enrolled. With its location in the Eastland along the busy Jogoo road, the College is ideal for evening studies for people living in Eastland and those working in the industrial area. 5 carlile college office of the chaplain Rev. Collins Nyawade College Chaplain Spiritual Transformation is a catch word here at Church Army Africa. Personally, I used this term to reflect my concern for seeking positive change in the whole of Church Army life Spiritually. I carefully use this word to remind us that human progress is not inevitable; it takes hard work, and there is an adversary who works against desire to enhance life. True Spiritual growth or development involves choices, setting aside that which is not for life in us and our community while activity seeking and supporting all that is for life. This requires that we say no to some things in order to say yes to what really matters. In other words, Spiritual and character formation implies changing our choices. The office of the chaplain is charged with care and oversight of Spiritual and Pastoral activities within the College. In other words, it can be said that the office of a chaplain is to help deepen the Spiritual and ethical life of the campus. Student Bible Study: This semester we are studying the Gospel of Mark. Mark is a mosaic picturing the ministry of Jesus as a relentless progression of events destined to reach climax in the cross. From the report that I received from the students indicates that this is one of our best Bible study since it gives a clear picture on the theme that we are handling this year! We have an average of about 5-6 students with lively discussion and wonderful times of intercessory prayers. Pastoral Care: Pastoral care has increased this time of year with the last semester not being an exception. Pastoral care ministry requires attention to detail through intentional active listening and prayer care. Several students (SOM & CABS) and staffs present themselves every day for ongoing pastoral care and prayer. Behavioral and drug problems continue to be a source of concern among many requiring to counseling service in addition to pastoral care. Mentorship/An Example or One on One approach: This relational approach with (majorly CABS students) has become one of the most effective ways of mentorship and it began to bear fruit. I wish to report that most of these teens have sensed we aren t just babysitting them but that we really care for them. Some of them share their ideas, goals, fears and problems with the mentors. Yes, our focus is on relationships; With Jesus first and each other. We reiterate to them that relationship with Jesus is an energizing relationship based on God s pure love, and that it is both real and available them right now. Focust Discipleship: Mentoring students individually to create stronger Disciples of Christ. Other activities coming up From Programs to Ministry Sports Ministry: The purpose of the program is to encourage sports as a way of encouraging and advancing in developing constructive personal and Spiritual growth. The aim of this is to; achieve sound moral standards and providing an extended family to assist young people in being valuable contributors of their society. The whole idea is that our teens must be evangelized and discipled. This will be beginning a soon as possible. Career Day: This will take place in the month of June 2017 and it will be three hours annual event and will be structured to motivate and inform CABS students about various career opportunities. Through meaningful exchanges with panelists in interactive workshops, students will learn their professional options, what they should be doing to prepare themselves today. Special guest will help to entertain and encourage young attendees to stay positive and focus on their goals and above all, to grow spiritually. Major Challenges Inconsistency: It is true beyond doubt that success in mentorship and discipleship ministry I often built on strong collaboration between the chaplains office and the students. Students who periodically or constantly change schools make it challenging for all parties (chaplain s office) involved in building strong relationships. It is important to note that mentorship and discipleship involves building a very strong relationship. Teachers who make a difference or not? The moral, ethical and spiritual development of a student s a fundamental goal of education. Any education that only informs the mind and lives the heart and the character/behavior is not education at all! All teachers, a cross all areas of curriculum have a responsibility to inculcate in their students positive values and a capacity for moral and ethical judgment. The new Curriculum should be implemented as this will give SOM tutors opportunity to instill maturity in CABS. I wish to conclude by admitting that none of this, of course, will be easy and the result may not be a microwavable one. It is equally important to remember that much of the work should be and can only be done effectively in the context of what everyone (both CABS staffs and any other staff within the compound) should be doing to support and to promote good instruction (values), and much of it creating a strong community, helping students with behavior problem. This will certainly serve moral, spiritual and academic goals.

6 Carlile College Marketing Department The office of Marketing and Public Relations sets the policies around which the public image of Church Army Africa is represented in order to; Promote institutions mission, goals and values. Support the creation of internal and external communication tools. Expand public awareness. Develop positive public perceptions. Drive marketing initiatives. 7 CARLILE COLLEGE STUDENT TESTIMONIES Susan Sylvia Onyapidi Kenya 3rd Year - Diploma in Christian Mission I got saved on 21st November in the year It was during a fellowship in one of my parents group called Tukutedereza. The Holy Spirit spoke to me and I decided to give my life to Christ. I have loved being in Carlile College because of the positivity that it brings in my life. I will never be the same in my ministry as I have gained more knowledge in my ministry and my spiritual realm is sharpened. I also feel that my faith is increased by each day. When I finish my studies and leave the college,i will take with me the Gospel of Christ of transforming the world into the ministry of what God wants and nurturing gospel ministers to the levels of experiencing and involving God in every life situation. I will also take with me the knowledge and understanding the Bible. Justin Hete Elisama South Sudan 3rd year -Diploma in Christian Mission I became born again in I decided to give my life to Christ so that I could become a believer, get to know more about Christ and accept that the Lord is my personal savior. Learning here at Carlile College has helped me gain more knowlegde about God s word and understanding the Bible,I have been able to interact with students from different cultures and backgrounds and I now know how to handle the ministry. This College has transformed me to the point where I am now able to tranform the lives of other people and to preach the word of God. Eugene Uvutseneza Rwanda 1st year - Diploma in Christian Mission I received Christ in my life on 25th July I understood the reason why I needed Him in my life, the cause being in Romans 5 & 10. The college has a very good system of education like in essays and research methods. It also has an easy access to study materials and the lecturers encourage us in our daily lives. I will take with me the ways and means of carrying out mission and how organize pastoral activities in my local church in the most effective way.

8 CARLILE COLLEGE STUDENT TESTIMONIES Wivine Kemigisa Neema Congo 1 st Year - Diploma in Christian Mission I got saved in the year I was walking and I heard the Lord s voice speak to me. Everytime I went to church, the pastor would preach about how people would perish if they didn t receive Christ in their lives. One thing I like about being in Carlile College is the system of learning that is really helping me. When I came here, I didn t understand the Bible but now I do. I plan to go back to Congo(DRC) and preach the gospel of Christ when I finish my studies here at Carlile. Jared Benjamin Tanzania 1st year - Diploma in Christian Mission I became born again in I decided to give my life to Chris so that I could r, get to know more about Christ and what he expects of me in this life that he has given me. The system of education and teaching here at Carlile is encouraging me to step out of my comfort zone and learn many new things. Through the knowledge that I will receive from Carlile, hope to set a good example in my community through evangelism and pastoral work. Tamako Isaiah Isaac South Sudan 1st year - Diploma in Christian Mission I received Christ in my life in I got saved so as to have eternal life. I like the learning methods that are used in Carlile College. I have stepped out of my comfort zone in a span of a few months and I believe that I will continue to realize and explore my potential in Ministry. Once I leave Carlile College, I hope to go back home and start organizing fellowships so that I may preach the Gospel of Christ to my community.
