1 PRESBYTERY OF SHENANDOAH Shenandoah Press Special points of interest: Big Event is coming! Sign up now! New Books at Resource Center New Members of Shenandoah Presbytery International Peacemakers Oasis Inside this issue: New Members 3 223rd General Assembly Reports 4 5 Volume 3, Issue 7 A Message from our General Presbyter By Changing Nothing, Nothing Changes Tony Robbins Change a word that strikes fear in the hearts of many and in many a congregation. If we have been long-time members of a congregation, we may enjoy reminiscing about by gone times, when more people filled the pews and there were many more hands to help. Or we like the way we are right now and are afraid of what is happening because there are new people coming now and they don t necessarily want to follow the way we have always done it. Change is something that is inevitable, but we might not welcome it. My challenge to us as congregations as followers of Jesus is to embrace change. Not change for change sake, but for sharing the Gospel of Jesus. How are we, the ones who know Jesus, love and trust him, sharing that with our community and into the world? The church is not the Field of Dreams as in the movie where it is said Build it and they will come. Rather we have to be going out to meet new people, understand the needs of the community and live in the world. Change is hard because it is so easy to fall back into the familiar and what we feel is safe. But remember friends, Christ has called us all to be out and about sharing his love and forgiveness and he has given us everything we need to do it! We must have the courage to embrace our calling and believe the promises he has made to us! Stop being afraid of what could go wrong, and start being excited of what could go right Tony Robbins Let s all get excited, in Christ s name! 2 Page 2 Shenandoah Press Associate General Presbyter Nancy Meehan Yao The 6 Great Ends of the Church While we might have heard the phrase The Great Ends of the Church in a lecture or a sermon, or (maybe) even talked about it in a Session meeting what does it mean, these ends of the church? It means purpose: for what are we created? For what does the church exist? If the chief end of humanity is to glorify God and enjoy God forever (Westminster Catechism, with some revised language) tells us about our purpose as individual humans, what about the collection of peoples of faith called the church? The Great Ends of the Church are: (Book of Order F ) The proclamation of the Gospel for the salvation of humankind. The shelter, nurture and spiritual fellowship of the children of God. The maintenance of divine worship. The preservation of the truth. The promotion of social righteousness. The exhibition of the Kingdom of Heaven to the world. You can see from this list, that the ends of the church (that is, our purpose) has much less to do with us and much more with the world. The church exists to be a community of faith, hope, love and witness. (Book of Order F-1.03) But these great ends were written in the early 20 th century. In this era of change, how do we live out our purpose, in new and exciting ways? How is our proclamation of the Gospel shaped and expressed in a 24/7 social media environment? How do nurture spiritual fellowship in a time when families have much different makeups? How can worship be expressed in new ways, languages and flavors? In an era of fake news, how do we help people know the truth? In a time when people don t want church to be too political, how do we faithfully promote social righteousness? In our lives together as the church, in what ways do we exhibit the Kingdom of Heaven to the world? For some real-life illustrations of the Great Ends being lived out in congregations today, see Presbyterians Today, August/September I would love to hear how your congregation is living out their purposes. Please share with me by assocgp@shenpres.org, or in person, what that looks like for your congregation and your ministry context. I love to hear your stories! Blessings, Nancy Board of Pensions Announcements Registration is open for a regional session of Growing into Tomorrow...Today, the Board's very popular pre-retirement seminar. 4 Page 4 Shenandoah Press 223rd General Assembly Reports from Commissioners Asher Arey, Young Adult Advisory Delegate (YAAD) Massanutten Presbyterian Church I am so thankful I had the opportunity to attend GA this summer. Working with YAADs from all over the country was probably the greatest blessing from my time in St. Louis. I have connections and friends in almost every state as well as Puerto Rico! Because I am an incoming freshman to ODU in the fall, I was at a perfect age to befriend all of the YAADs. I was able to relate to those younger than me, as well as give them advise, and I was able to learn and hear stories from college-aged YAADs. I am hopeful that these connections I made with like-minded people in St. Louis will last a lifetime! A big takeaway for me as well as spending time with other YAADs was advocating for Native Americans in my committee, Mission Coordination. I witnessed ignorance towards the feelings of the Native Americans, and used my voice, as well as my vote, to speak against it. My words inspired other YAADs and commissioners to stand with the Native American PCUSA churches. I also used my voice in committee to amend an overture and present it to the committee. In many instances in my committee experience, I called for compromise and kindness from my fellow commissioners and YAADs. Don Baker, Ruling Elder Moorefield Presbyterian Church These commissioners were elected to represent Shenandoah Presbytery at the 223rd General Assembly in St. Louis, June They share some special thoughts with us here about their experience. We are thankful for their service in this way! One of my highlights at General Assembly revolved around worship. There was a worship service every day with the opening worship being held on the first Saturday morning of the Assembly. Hearing approximately 2,500 Presbyterians singing The Church s One Foundation will always be a memory I will not forget. The sacrament of Holy Communion was observed at each worship service which was also very meaningful. My worship experience on Sunday morning was at Ladue Chapel in a suburb of St. Louis. It has a membership of approximately 1,700 and its facility was beautiful. They had just updated their sanctuary which included the installation of a $2 million organ. A service opportunity in which I participated was to join the Church on the Street one evening for an outreach ministry. This non-denominational church provides food, health and sanitary kits, clothing and other items to people who are either homeless or suffering very difficult living conditions. We made snow cones for the children, played games with them and fed many people from a taco truck which had donated the food for the benefit of the people who came. It was a wonderful mission experience and one I think helped the people we served. Watching our own Jim Atwood receive the Distinguished Writer s Award from the Presbyterian Writer s Guild recognizing his longtime advocacy of gun safety was very uplifting. Another highlight was listening to Dr. Crystal Sanders speak on Head Start and Mississippi s Black Freedom Struggle. Dr. Sanders noted that Head Start would not have begun in Mississippi were it not for the sponsorship of a small Presbyterian college in that state. Hearing Rear Admiral Margaret Kibben, Chief of Navy Chaplains and a PCUSA minister speak about her naval career and beliefs was also a wonderful moment during the Assembly. Altogether, my attendance and service at the 223 rd General Assembly of our denomination was probably a once in a lifetime experience. I thank all those who encouraged me to attend and the Presbytery for voting to appoint me as a commissioner. It was truly God s blessing for me to be there.
5 Volume 3, Issue 7 Page 5 Rick Comstock, Ruling Elder, Trinity Presbyterian Church Stated Clerk J. Herbert Nelson II in 2017 started what is called the hands and feet initiative. The thrust of this is that we should no longer be like any other convention that comes to town spends some money, has a good time and then leaves without doing anything to address problems that exist in that community. To that end one of the major items of action was to raise funds to help those charged with minor non-violent crimes and had no money to post bail or pay fines to get out of jail. To that end the monies from Saturday s opening worship went for that purpose. On Tuesday afternoon around 1,000 participants marched from the convention center to the criminal justice building to deliver a check for $47,200 for that purpose. There was a jazz concert on Tuesday evening to raise money for the hands and feet initiative at our next GA in It is my understanding that the money is already being put to work in Baltimore. The YAAD s (Young Adult Advisory Delegates) took up a collection among themselves and raised $ that they split 3 ways which they presented at the final plenary session to the co moderators and stated clerk to use for each of their special projects. Following that someone got up and suggested that the commissioners also have an impromptu collection which was taken as we were leaving the final plenary session for that same purpose. I attended the Presbyterian writer s guild luncheon where Jim Atwood received the 2018 David Steele Distinguished Writer Award for his work about gun violence, where his was also the keynote speaker. Members of the Presbyterian Peace Fellowship and Fossil Free PCUSA staged demonstrations daily, that we could participate in if you wished, outside the hall we were meeting, and when the assembly failed to vote for divestment staged a die in as we left the hall at the end of that session to show their disappointment with the decision. Patrick Lanaghan, Teaching Elder, Timber Ridge Presbyterian Church But strive first for the kindom of God and his righteousness. ~Matthew 6:33~ The 223rd General Assembly was held June 16-23, 2018 in St. Louis, Missouri, and this assembly s theme was Kin-dom Building for the 21st Century: A Renewed Witness and Call to Christian Action Framed in Worship and Biblical Reflection. It has been a joy and a privilege to serve at the General Assembly as a teaching elder from our Presbytery. This was my first GA and it has been fascinating to learn about its work and see the process in action. I entered this assembly with one predominant question on my mind: how does the work at GA affect the local church? In other words, should the local church be bothered caring about what happens at GA? As we gather, not only at the GA, but within our own churches, it is extremely evident how local culture has shifted away from organized religion; some are looking for a more spiritual connection with their God, while many others fail to recognize that there is even a master creator of all things. I was very pleased to see how so many persons from all different places and nationalities embracing, talking, and listening to each other. Commissioners in their committees and plenary sessions shared their views and opinions while others listened and responded until decisions were made. And decisions were made. Far too many for me list here, but important enough that I encourage all to look them up on the GA website ga-pcusa.org. It has been an inspiration watching how our church comes together to discover God s will. This adventure has taught me that people coming together for a common cause can achieve so much for the Kingdom of God. And concerning the empty pews in our churches it would be so easy to say, trust on God and leave it in his hands, but then again aren t we called to be his hands and feet in the Kin-dom of God?

8 Page 8 Shenandoah Press News from Camp Paddy Run Day Camp 2018: Things got pretty WILD at Camp Paddy Run this year as campers and adults alike enjoyed the sights and sounds of this year's theme: Going on Safari. From elaborate costumes, to face-painting to 'animals' roaming in the field- the week glorified God and His beautiful creation. In total, 94 campers participated, 37 of which were teens. Of the 26 adult volunteer helpers and counselors, 8 were returning camper alumni from as far away as North Carolina and Texas. This year's 'Coins of Caring' fundraiser collected at Day Camp was $390 and was donated to Rufus Burton's First Church OPIOID Ministry in Martinsburg, WV. Day Camp was held June 25-29, Adventure Camp 2018: Twenty youth in grades 7-12 came out for our 2nd year of Adventure Camp, July Though the stormy weather kept us from river rafting on the first day, campers enjoyed the indoor adventure of an 'escape room' along with hiking in the rain, zip-lining in the rain... and playing in massive puddles in the field. Despite the wet clothes, no one's spirit was dampened- pardon the pun. In fact, they all wanted to stay a few more days. As one camper put it, "I think if the weather was nice and we were outside doing all these things, we wouldn't have grown as close!" Throughout the week the biblical focus was on the Holy Spirit. Because We Care at Camp Paddy Run Day Camp 2018 All day campers, counselors and helpers of Camp Paddy Run are amazed that $ was collected in (4) days during this year s day camp for yet another worthy cause. This year's recipient was Pastor Rufus Burton s First Church OPIOID Ministry, which he has been promoting at his church and throughout the Shenandoah Presbytery. Pastor Rufus is the minister of the First Presbyterian Church in Martinsburg, WV. Submitted by Tom Widder, CEC Chair, Moorefield Presbyterian Church
9 Volume 3, Issue 7 Page 9 The Oasis Project Oasis: A fertile place in a desert, due to the presence of water (as defined by Webster s New World Dictionary). Oasis: A fertile place in ministry, due to the presence of fellow travelers (as defined by the Committee on Relational Ministry). To all clergy, Christian educators and commissioned ruling elders, CRM has a program for you that we call the Oasis Project. In short form, this is a project that provides funding for acts of recreation, times for feasting, opportunities to see the world, all in the company of fellow clergy, CE & CRE s. Your responsibility? Simply connect with your peers, and form a group that wishes to share time and events with each other, with the goal of recreation, relation, renewal and relationship nurture. There is no book to buy or read; no formal applications to fill out; no projects to construct, nor are there reports to be turned in. Rather, this project is to develop through recreation with peers stronger witness in our ministries by having fun. Since there is no mandate or manual, all you need to do is reach out to CRM member Rev. Kerry Foster (kfosterbpc@verizon.net), pastor at Bridgewater Presbyterian Church, and ask how does one get to come out and play and have fun? It really is just that simple! the Oasis Project a gift from the Ramkey family to the Shenandoah Presbytery It is widely recognized that in life preparation is key, but how do we prepare ourselves and family members to face major life decisions surrounding the aging process, serious illness, and end-of-life care? Too often persons or families are labeled as resistant or lacking in faith when legitimate concerns, barriers, questions, and doubts are present that may impact decision-making and the quality of care they receive. This important seminar, Starting the Conversation, will provide tools and resources to empower participants as they explore their faith and show how to have these important and often difficult conversations with family and friends to ensure the best possible outcomes. The more we understand the unique needs and wishes of one another, the better we can respond and the more effective we can be. Massanetta is excited to offer this new program for For information or registration, visit the webpage here.

13 Volume 3, Issue 7 Page 13 Do you know a bright, inquisitive high school senior who is sensing a call to ministry? Help us spread the word about the A. Purnell Bailey Pre-Ministerial Program for Ordained Ministry at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Virginia. As the oldest continuously operating United Methodist College in the United States, Randolph-Macon is committed to nurturing young adults who are sensing a call to Christian vocation. Weekly meetings allow students to more deeply discern their calling prior to selecting a seminary and to gain valuable leadership experiences in ministry during the undergraduate years. This scholarship offers half-tuition during a student s freshman and sophomore years and full-tuition during the junior and senior years along with two internship experiences (one for academic credit and one with a $3,000 stipend.) We hope to remove the financial obstacles from those who are seeking to follow God s call and prepare for a life of ministry. This unique program is entering its fifteenth year of supporting a new generation of Christian clergy. Find out more and apply at: pre-ministerial. Shenandoah Valley Teen Challenge Concert with CARMAN My name is Lauren Witzke, I am currently a student at Shenandoah Valley Teen Challenge. As you may know, addiction has completely devastated the Shenandoah Valley; The army of God must rise up, and stand together on the war-front against addiction. The enemy has tried to wipe out an entire generation, but God has provided us with a solution. I truly believe Teen Challenge is a God-ordained anecdote to the drug epidemic; my life in itself being a testimony to that. I am reaching out to you for your help in promotion of our October 18th fundraiser. We are hosting CARMAN at Potter's House in Harrisonburg, Virginia. I am trying to motivate the community and local churches to join us for this event! Since we are a non-profit organization with the Holy Spirit as our foundation, we are unable to collect any type of aid from the government. This is both freeing, yet it keeps us financially bound. We are not currently able to accept students who cannot afford the monthly tuition. God has given me a vision to change that! This concert is the platform for the launch into a new season of prosperity for Teen Challenge. Partnering with Teen Challenge is partnering with God's solution to the drug epidemic. I'm asking that you could spread the word for our concert to your congregation. We at Teen Challenge would be extremely grateful for any aid you can offer in helping us achieve our goals and eliminate addiction in the Shenandoah Valley! Carman is a Christian artist known for his theatrics and creativity. We are trying to promote the purchase of VIP tickets for his show- If you could pass it on, I'd really appreciate it! VIP Tickets include front row seats, a meet and greet with Carman, and a professional picture for you ladies! It's going to be a great show for sure. Here is the website to purchase Carman VIP tickets: All proceeds go to Shenandoah Valley Teen Challenge, and CARMAN! God Bless! Lauren E.
