From the Pastor Preparing for retirement I have hinted here and there that I will be retiring in thirteen months, so now it s time to make an official announcement. My retirement date is set for June 30, A year goes by fast, so I want to be out front with it so that we can all be prepared. Because I will turn 72 next February, retirement for me is mandatory according to our church s Discipline. And, after 46 years of active service, the time is right. Are you expecting to hear about a detailed, adventurous, post retirement plan that I have devised? At the moment there M y retirement date is set for June 30, A year goes by fast, so I want to be out front with it so that we can all be prepared. isn t one. We haven t decided where we want to live, how we ll occupy our time, what our goals are I will of course stay active in a local church, and I m sure Kelley will continue her education, but beyond that? Watch this space for further details. What does this mean for the United Church family? Since we know that the year coming up is my last, we have more time than usual to prepare for the transition. Staff/Parish Committee is already discussing the kind of pastor that would serve us best, and they will be working with both our outgoing and new District Superintendents to develop a church profile. The bishop and the Superintendents will start making appointments after the new year. When a candidate is selected, he/she will have an introductory interview with Staff/ Parish. In the months to come I will be assisting SPRC as much as I can. I also want to continue to develop our Christian education outreach to children and to make sure our communications tools are up to date. I pledge to work hard to make our church s life rich and lively as we enter into a new era. I will of course miss all of you very much. My time at UCS has been full of great relationships, of genuine love, and of faithful service to our Lord. My hope is that the best years of this church are still ahead of it. O Lord, you have searched me and known me. 2 Corinthians 4:5-12. Imperfect as we are, we are the chosen vessels of God s power. Mark 2:23-3:6. Jesus acts with divine authority. June 10: The Third Sunday after Pentecost 1 Samuel 8:4-20; 11:14-15 The Israelites demand a king. Psalm 138 "I give you thanks with my whole heart." 2 Corinthians 4:15-5:1 Our connection with Christ gives us a vision of eternity. Mark 3:20-35 Jesus answers those who accuse him of insanity. June 17: The Fourth Sunday after Pentecost 1 Samuel 15:34-16:3 In a troubled time for Israel, God calls Samuel to anoint David as king. Psalm 20 The Lord will answer you in the day of trouble. 2 Corinthians 5:6-17 Our faith in Christ makes us new creations we die and rise with him. Mark 4:26-34 God s rule will grow, but mysteriously. We will not always see it clearly. June 24: The Fifth Sunday after Pentecost 1 Samuel 17:1a, 4-11, 19-23, With faith and courage, David fights with the Philistine champion. Psalm 9:9-20 The Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed. 2 Corinthians 6:1-13 Paul defends his ministry to a group of Christians who doubt him. Mark 4:35-44 Jesus asks his fearful followers to trust him to calm the storms. Mission of the Month MorningStar Mission relieves the spiritual and physical hunger of the poor by providing food for the hungry, clothing for the needy, shelter for the homeless and the Gospel of Jesus Christ to all. Since 1909, MorningStar Mission has served men, women, children and entire families in Joliet and Will County, offering hope for the hurting through one-time meals and long-term recovery and transition programs. We had as many as 7 and 5 very faithful young people. We thank their parents and grandparents for working so hard to get them to us each Sunday morning. We look forward to Sundays in the fall after the fair to continue our journey of faith with these young people. There is always room for many more children. United Church has a goal to double our attendance to 10. So, all children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews and friends are invited to join us to learn how much God loves us! Thank you again to the devoted family members who committed to this Sunday School year. As Otto and Ada taught us this year, Thanks and Praise! 3

4 Can you believe that it is time to start thinking about Fair Pies? Right now we need to think about the fruit for the pies. Last year wasn't the best rhubarb harvest so we need to be keeping our eyes & ears open in case some family or friends might have some that they are willing to donate. We used all the rhubarb we had frozen so we will need quite a bit. You know the routine: Pick, clean, cut into pieces, and freeze. We will have freezer space at the church available. We will also need to keep watch for specials on the other pie fruit we use as they come into season. In June we will start collecting our Gold Medal or Pillsbury flour, sugar & Crisco shortening. Hopefully there will be sales coming up we can take advantage of. When you give to your church, sometimes you want your gift designated for a special purpose (mission of the month, flowers, a special project, etc). So: Whenever you give, use your offering envelope and write on it where you want your gift to go. If there is nothing designated, your offering will go in the general fund to pay current expenses. If you made specific designations when you turned in your annual pledge card, you also must make them each time you give. If you give on line, there is a screen where you are asked to indicate how you want your gift to be used before you submit your payment. If you use bill pay through your bank, there should be a place to write a memo on your check. Don't have envelopes? Call the office and we will be glad to give you a set.
