4 Opiio A4 Thursday, JANUARY 1, 2015 Guest Commetary Applause to Groto for stadig agaist ew turbie proposal Editor s ote: The followig guest commetary was submitted for publicatio by the members of New Hampshire Wid Watch. New Hampshire Wid Watch applauds Groto for its stad agaist additioal idustrial wid turbies i its tow, with 70 percet of the tow s registered voters takig part, ad 145 of 234 votes beig cast agaist additioal wid turbies. Groto already has Groto Wid, a 24 idustrial wid turbie complex for which there had bee o vote, or a process i place to otify area residets, ad it deforested/ destroyed miles of Cardiga/Newfoud regio ridgelies. NH Wid Watch was formed two years ago as a grass roots orgaizatio to brig awareess ad provide facts about idustrial wid turbies; sice the, ot a sigle tow i the Cardiga/Newfoud regio has voted to support idustrial wid complexes. The Groto vote was i respose to reports that Portuguese compay Eergias de Portugal (EDP) is plaig o seekig New Hampshire Site Evaluatio Committee (NHSEC) approval for its Spruce Ridge Idustrial Wid Project located i Caaa, Orage, Dorchester, Alexadria ad Groto, ad will be movig forward with tow meetigs as ow required by law. The Spruce Ridge project will cotai idustrial wid turbies, approximately 100 feet taller tha the idustrial wid turbies at earby Groto Wid which ca be see from Mout Cardiga as well as Newfoud Lake ad other locatios withi a 50-mile radius of the Groto wid turbies. The Groto Plaig Board created a ballot to determie if residets support future idustrial wid projects i their tow. The ballot was set to registered voters alog with a stamped retur evelope addressed to the Plaig Board. All ballots were serially umbered to esure pollig itegrity. To guaratee voter aoymity, the ballots were radomly iserted ito the evelopes. Based o this vote, the Groto Plaig Board will sed a letter to the NHSEC statig Groto s positio. The Select Board also stated they will sed a similar letter to the NHSEC with the same purpose. States Lori Lerer, Presidet of NH Wid Watch, A few years ago, Eergias de Portugal met with Groto tow officials to otify them of EDP s itet to develop a massive turbie complex across the regio. Last ight, the citizes of Groto joied like-mided residets of Alexadria, Hebro, Grafto, Dabury, Bridgewater ad Bristol i votig with huge turouts ad resoudig margis to reject yet aother idustrial wid complex i the Cardiga/Newfoud Regio. Idustrial wid has bee vigorously rejected by every tow i the regio. Eergias de Portugal has repeatedly stated that they wat local commuity support. They have o support here. Not ow. Not ever. Idustrial wid developers take otice... you are ot wated here. We have oe huge turbie complex here already. Oe is oe too may. Stick to your word EDP ad move o. Lerer cotiues, People live i this area because we do t wat to be urbaized. Now that the regio has bee turbaized by Iberdrola s vast Groto Wid complex, residets i all tows i the regio are comig together to fight this latest idustrial scourge from EDP as the residets of Groto did so overwhelmigly last ight. It has become abudatly clear to residets i the area that ay additioal idustrial wid will oly serve to icrease the cost of electricity ad trasmissio while doig virtually NOTHING to lower CO2 emissios. Pasquaey Sowshoe Club Hike Ja. 4, Ispiratio Poit, Bristol (EASY/ MODERATE) This is Staff From Fr. Leo I the dizzyig array of holidays i this two week period, Christmas, Holy Family, New Year, ad Epiphay, it ca be difficult to keep up with the actio. We are i the midst of a seaso rich for its spirituality ad also for its secular activity. We are first of all still i the Christmas seaso despite what the store circulars tell us. This week, we celebrate the Holy Family, the awareess that God the Father wated his So Jesus, to grow up ormal, with a father ad a mother. We recogize i this day ad age that the family comes i varyig sizes, shapes, ad cofiguratios. The ideal America family of the 1950 s a la Father Kows Best with a mother, father, ad twothree childre is ow a miority of what we call family. All families are good, o matter how cofigured. We do ot live i a ideal world ad so all families as well as members are flawed. We do our best with what God gives us. If you stop to thik about the Holy Family, Jesus, Mary, ad Joseph they were ot a typical family either, because Joseph was Jesus foster father. Yet the Holy Family is held out as a ideal to us as a home commuity of persos who kew God s love ad tried to live that love for each other every day. We are all called to be holy families...to let the light of Christ shie through our every thought, word, deed...to strive mightily for uity ad harmoy, ad to give up ego ad selfishess out of care for others. Parets do their best but childre too ofte put adults to shame with heartfelt geerosity. Let us pray for all families, especially those beset by eormous obstacles or shrouded by great tesio. Thoughts from Pope Fracis... The followig excerpts were take from a talk that our Holy Father Pope Fracis gave whe visitig St. Joseph i the club s seaso starter evet. You will be rewarded with great views of the tow of Bristol ad the surroudig area. Meet at the Bristol Liquor Store parkig lot at 1 p.m. We will drive to the Keega s o Robie Road ad hike the trail to New Chester Road ad Ispiratio Poit. This hike will take about 1 hour. The trail is steep at the begiig ad the levels off to the road. The Slim Baker Lodge will be ope ad warm for refreshmets after comig dow from the poit. A alterative to the hour hike would be to drive to the parkig lot for the lodge ad hike to the Poit. The lodge will be ope at 1 p.m., so if you wat to wait for the log hike group to arrive, you could wait there. Ay questios, please call the Leader at Meet: Bristol State Liquor Store at 1 p.m. Rome o Gaudete Suday. Pope Fracis met with the sick, a group of gypsies, a First Commuio class, ad couples whose ewbor babies were baptized i the last year. No sait was ever kow for havig a fueral face, Pope Fracis said; the joy of kowig oe is loved by God ad saved by Christ must be see at least i a sese of peace, if ot a smile. Be joyful as you prepare for Christmas, he told them at Mass, urgig as a first step that people thak God each day for the blessig they have bee give. A Christia s Christmas joy has othig to do with the cosumerism that leads to everyoe beig axious o Dec. 24 because, Oh, I do t have this, I eed that -o, that is ot God s joy. With Christmas comig very soo, he asked them to pray. Do t forget, we pray for Christmas joy. A Christia is oe who has a heart full of peace because he or she kows how to fid joy i the Lord eve whe goig through difficult momets i life. Havig faith does ot mea ot havig difficulties, but havig the stregth to face them kowig we are ot aloe. Whe joy or at least peace shies through a perso s face, he said, others will woder why, opeig the possibility of sharig with them the Gospel. With Christmas approachig, the Pope said, the church ivites us to give witess that Jesus is ot just a historical figure; He is the word of God who cotiues to illumiate people s paths today; His gestures, the sacramets, show the tederess, cosolatio of love of the Father for every huma beig. Christia joy, he said, comes from prayer ad from givig thaks to God. It grows as oe reviews all of the blessigs that God has give. Meditatio Look to this day! For it is life, the very life of life. Maggie s book is like a bowl of chicke soup cooked with delicious motherly/sisterly wisdom that soothes my pai ad eergizes me for a better future, oe reader wrote. This is a book I will keep o my bookshelf for log time ad will read wheever I am i eed of comfort ad wisdom. Besides Dressers Ulimited, copies of Aderso s book may also be purchased at the Warre Public Library or olie through Amazo.com. BCS FROM PAGE A1 glass isulatio was poorly istalled ad left may gaps to the outside. A blower door test, Cadieux reported, also showed that the buildig was experiecig early three complete chages of air every hour. The stadard, he said, is a air exchage of oly oe oe-third of a buildig s volume every hour. This buildig was ie times leakier tha it should have bee if it was built to curret New Hampshire Eergy Code requiremets, said Cadieux. Widows o the frot of the buildig that were oce used for walk-up ice cream service as Buzzy s Market, were also ot as efficiet as they should be ad a old air coditioig uit i the attic was allowig eve more cold air to seep ito the buildig. Plas were made to remedy the situatio but first moey had to be raised to get the work doe ad there Cadieux also pitched i to help BCS keep that fudraisig to a miimum. Workig with the New Hampshire Retail Associatio he was able to obtai 30-percet of the costs for the improvemets through a busiess eergy efficiecy program, sposored by the Regioal Greehouse Gas Iitiative. I December, J. Myers Builders of Lisbo, a compay that specializes i eergy efficiecy improvemets, the stepped i to perform the work. The compay blew i a closed cell spray foam that provides the highest R-value per square ich ad does ot allow air to move through it like fiberglass isulatio does. They replaced the former ice cream couter widows with more efficiet widows ad sealed the space where the air coditioer oce sat. Most of our homes ad buildigs were built durig the age of cheap fuel. At the time they were built, makig them eergy efficiet was ot a priority, Cadieux said. With a small ivestmet ad workig with a cotractor whose focus is o makig a buildig more eergy efficiet, ad ot just throwig i more isulatio, it s ot ucommo for a buildig ower to realize a percet decrease i their fuel costs. With the work complete, it is ow estimated that BCS will use 700 gallos less i fuel this witer, which will be a savigs of more tha $2,100 per year. BCS made aother improvemet to the frot room this year whe the cemet floor had to be jack hammered i order to fix a plumbig problem. Colby said whe that job was completed a ew carpet was laid dow that will help keep the room more comfortable, too. Last witer, we had to keep a light o i the utility closet to keep thigs i there from freezig ad we worked i figerless gloves, so we re really lookig forward to stayig warm this witer, she said FROM PAGE A1 Bristol, the society felt the ew gree space that work created would be perfect for a oe day marketplace. It s a beautiful gree that is t used much. We thought that holdig a evet there, right i Cetral Square, would also help brig eve more people ito dowtow Bristol, said Lucille Keega. Others let their time to fudraisig efforts to beefit local oprofit groups through Ru Your Bus Off race, the Turkey Trot i Bridgewater, Freudeberg NOK s ca challege that collected operishable foods for the local food patry ad much, much more. Bristol Fire Departmet also had a successful first year i providig witer coats for Newfoud area childre through Operatio Warm, ad the Bristol Police Departmet s Duk A Cop fudraiser beefited youth baseball ad softball programs. Aother large show of commuity support occurred this past summer whe youg ad old came together to build a ew playgroud at Kelley Park i Bristol. The playgroud was made possible through grats, the geerosity of local busiess ad idividual doatios, may voluteer hours ad the Bristol voters who approved two warrat articles i March that brought more tha $38,000 forward to help make it all possible. The tow was so supportive of this project at Tow Meetig ad we re very grateful, said Dorcas Gordo who sat o the playgroud committee. I Dabury, the Blazig Star Grage had great commuity support i restorig a historic stage curtai ad Ragged Moutai Resort i Dabury opeed their doors ad ski slopes to beefit CHaD ad its programs for seriously ill childre just this past moth. The House i Hauted Hill tured screams ito dreams for other local oprofit agecies ad may orgaizatios like the Hebro Fire Departmet, Newfoud Pathways ad others beefited through Hebro s summer cocert series. It s a ice fudraiser to beefit busiesses ad orgaizatios from right here i our commuity, said cocert co-orgaizer Kathlee Flemig, but they re also a great way for families to relax, ejoy the beauty of the stars ad the sky, ad ot worry about makig dier that ight. Other ways to relax over the summer were the widely aticipated ad highly successful Hebro Church Fair, the Bristol Old Home Day celebratio, as well as the Daddy-Daughter Dace ad other commuity evets at Tapply-Thompso Commuity Ceter. Dabury pulled out all the stops to celebrate 100 years of their aual Grage Fair while traditioal bea hole suppers ad tos of fu, family-orieted activities took place durig both Bridgewater ad New Hampto s popular Old Home Day celebratios. Perhaps you ll decide to take up a musical istrumet, or hit the gym more ofte, or eve lear a ew laguage. All these are worthy goals, of course but you could also gai some key beefits by workig to achieve some fiacial resolutios. Here are a few to cosider: Fill gaps i your ivestmet portfolio. From time to time, you or possibly your fiacial advisor, if you work with oe might idetify gaps i your ivestmet portfolio. For example, you might fid that you are makig isufficiet progress o a key goal, such as savig for a child s college educatio. Or you might discover that you eed to place additioal resources i a particular asset class to achieve proper diversificatio, which ca help reduce the impact of market volatility o your portfolio. (Keep i mid, though, that diversificatio by itself ca t guaratee profits or protect agaist loss.) So put fillig portfolio gaps high o your list of New Year s fiacial resolutios. Boost your 401(k) cotributios. If your salary has goe up with the ew year, cosider boostig your cotributios to your 401(k) or similar employer-sposored retiremet pla. You may ot be able to afford to cotribute the maximum aual amout which i 2015 is $18,000, or $24,000 if you re 50 or older but if you icrease your cotributios every year, you ca greatly speed your progress toward your retiremet savigs goals. You ca put this New Year s resolutio ito effect by cotactig your huma resources or beefits departmet as soo as you get back to work i Elimiate uhealthy ivestmet habits. As part of your geeral New Year s resolutios, you may have decided to cut back o carbs ad sugar-laced soft driks, with the expectatio that these moves could help your overall health. But you ca also make uhealthy fiacial moves, such as chasig after hot stocks (which may already have cooled off by the time you fid them) or sellig quality ivestmets just because their price has temporarily dropped. Strive to focus more itetly o your logterm ivestmet strategy, as opposed to reactig to shortterm stimuli. Review your estate strategy. Durig ay give year, you might experiece major chages i your life marriage (or remarriage), ew child, ew home, etc. ad these chages will have profoud effects o your estate plas. But whether or ot you ecoutered ay of these evets i 2014, it s a good idea to look over your estate plaig documets* such as a will, livig trust, power of attorey ad so forth to make sure they are still curret with your wishes. It s especially importat to update beeficiary desigatios o your isurace policies ad retiremet accouts so that they are aliged with the wishes you have expressed i your will. Ad if you have t draw up your estate plas* yet, make a New Year s resolutio to do so i 2015 because it s ever too soo to take the steps ecessary to protect your loved oes i the future. Ulike some New Year s resolutios, these fiacial oes wo t require a big shift i your lifestyle. But if you ca stick to them, they ca make a big differece i your life. Every seaso, the Keett ad Kigswood alpie ski teams kick off the year at the Madiso ski area. With just the two teams i attedace, the kids are able to get i six giat slalom rus. This always works out as a great, relaxed way to kick off the seaso for both teams. Ad as is usually the case, Kig Pie came through with some great sow, despite the fact that we have had some less tha favorable weather over the course of the previous week. However, with the cold weather back i November, the sowmakers ad groomers were able to get out ad establish a great base ad because of that, the coditios were quite ice. I always use the first meet at Kig Pie as my first time out o the slopes for the seaso. Traditioally, I do t get i tos of skiig durig the year uless it s at a ski meet, so this is a good chace for me to get out ad get a few rus i. I will ever claim to be a expert skier. I am a adequate skier, I ca make it dow the hill without fallig, but I m ot goig to look like Bode Miller by ay stretch of the imagiatio. SPORTING CHANCE By JOSHUA SPAULDING I really do ejoy skiig ad gettig out o the slopes for the first time is always a treat. The folks at Kig Pie are fatastic ad it was ice to catch up with vetera coaches Kris Niiler ad Eddie Bradley ad see the kids compete. But it was also ice to do some rus o my ow i the morig ad at luch. A couple of years ago I missed the etire ski seaso because of my broke leg ad comig back the ext year was iterestig ad Kig Pie provided me a ice way to ease back ito the sport after a year away. Last year, I also missed my favorite week of the etire high school sports year, the skiig state meet week. Of course, last year I missed that week because I was i Russia at the Olympics, so the tradeoff was OK. But I am already lookig forward to gettig out o the slopes ad gettig some rus i ad gettig some great pictures. That s just aother reaso why I love ski meets. Alpie pictures, whe I push the butto New skaters are welcome at both programs. To cotact either program about registratio, Rose Marie Mariace at ifo@magicblades.org, or Sarah Pirrotta-Beoit at sapirrotta@plymouth.edu. right ad everythig works properly, are some of the best pictures I take all year log. There are oly a few photos that I ve take o the walls of my office. Oe is of Feway Park, oe is a great graduatio shot, two are of Carrie Uderwood ad two are of alpie ski racers at Cramore. I love alpie pictures, which might explai why I had more tha 300 to sort through after the first meet of the seaso. With the first ski meet i the books ad my first time o skis for the seaso i the rearview mirror, I am sure the seaso will begi to fly right alog. Here s hopig that the seaso brigs plety of time o the sow, both for work ad for pleasure. Fially, have a great day Dari Wipperma ad Happy New Year to all the readers out there.
