1 June 11, 2017 TRINITY SUNDAY Oak Grove Welcomes Dr. Joseph McBrayer Today Oak Grove celebrates the official arrival of Dr. Joseph McBrayer as our new associate pastor. Joseph will have responsibility for our Invitation and Discipleship ministries. Joseph is new to Oak Grove, but he is not new to the neighborhood. He and Frances have lived in the area during his tenure at Emory. Joseph comes to us after serving as Director of the Wesley Fellowship at Emory University. As the director of the United Methodist campus ministry, Joseph has been working in faith development and missions with college students. Frances works with Catholic Charities, and they have one child, Ali, who will be attending Coralwood next year. Joseph has been in ministry in the United Methodist Church for eight years, and we look forward to the next chapter of his ministry at Oak Grove. Already, he has been meeting with staff in planning worship and scheduling events for the next year. You will enjoy his easy manor, his deep faith, and his intentionality. Photography and videography are hobbies for Joseph, although his skills exceed most hobbyists! We look forward to seeing the fruits of those gifts, too. Transition comes quickly in the United Methodist Church. This year, we said farewell to Susan last week, and we are welcoming Joseph this week. A quick transition can be difficult emotionally, but it is helpful to the church, because ministry continues uninterrupted. You can help Joseph by wearing a name tag, introducing yourself repeatedly (you have one name to learn, and he has 3,000), and offering words of encouragement. We look forward to the years ahead, as we share ministry with Joseph, and we pray that the Lord will give us new opportunity for spiritual growth, faithful service, and effective ministry at Oak Grove.

9 Oak Grove continues to be a growing, thriving congregation. We have received more than 100 new members annually in 8 of the last 10 years. Although some members pass away and others move away, the active portion of our congregation is growing. And our congregation is becoming younger too. Just look on the Grand Lawn and playground after church, and you will see many children running and giggling! BUILDING UPDATE Over the first three years of our building program, we saw God s richest blessing and guidance as we began renovating and expanding our facility. As we stated when we started three years ago, this project is six years from beginning to end. Watch the Oak Grove News in the coming weeks, and you will hear details about each aspect of the building program. This is such an exciting time in the life of Oak Grove! Here is a summary of the major points of our building program that are still to come. Children are our first priority, and they will receive more space as a result of completing the top floor of the new wing. We will relocate most adult classes to the new wing so that the current education wing can be dedicated to our children. The new third floor will include classrooms, some of our offices, a new prayer room, and storage areas for ministries. We will maintain some staffing in the renovated Portico entrance so that whenever someone comes to Oak Grove there will be a staff person to greet and assist. With most adult classrooms located in the new wing, space for children will be expanded. The children s wing will have space for an assembly room, play area for younger children, expanded nursery, nursing mothers room, and added storage. Priority classrooms will be renovated for the children. We will renovate the rest rooms in the existing wing. The music ministry will have a new handbell rehearsal room and storage for robes for the children s and youth choirs. Another priority of this plan is addressing critical maintenance needs, including HVAC, sanctuary boiler, and breaker panels for which we can no longer obtain replacement parts. The Fellowship Hall roof repair is complete, and the repair of the Fellowship Hall ceiling is in progress. We intend to replace the floor in Fellowship Hall and freshen up the space with new paint. Outside we will landscape and correct a long-standing drainage problem. (Continued on back)

10 In the sanctuary, we will repair the organ, replace pew cushions, and install new carpet. We will also dedicate more space to the Altar Guild and improve the sacristy. Seniors and parents with young children will appreciate the work on improved entrances. The Portico entrance will have glass doors that can open automatically so that people with strollers, wheelchairs, and walkers can conveniently access the building. As you enter, there will be a reception desk on your right that will have church staff available during office hours. Additional parking will be added, and the lower parking lot will be resurfaced. We will create a fenced green space in the lot where the former Kid s Clubhouse stood. This space will be home to outdoor events for children, youth, Scouts, Oak Grove Christian School, church picnics, and community gatherings. It will be one of the favorite gathering places for children, youth, and adults. We project that we will significantly reduce the long term debt. When we began the project we promised that the residual debt would not exceed $1.8 million. If people continue to give generously, we believe we can reduce the residual debt by even more, with the potential of being debt-free at the end of this campaign! These are the projects we know. With any building our size, there are always new needs emerging, and we have included provision to address those needs. We know the video projectors in Sanctuary and Fellowship Hall need replacing. We also know that we need to renovate the rest room in the Narthex Bride s Room. We hope we can manage income and expenses in a way that allows us to address emerging and unforeseen issues. We hope that you will attend the upcoming Town Hall meeting on June 25, at 9:45 a.m. in the sanctuary. Additional information about the budget program will be shared.
