2 Welcome to God s house today!!! A special welcome to visitors and guests; we are pleased that you have joined us today! If you have no church family and if we can be of any help to you please call the pastor or speak with him after the service. We invite all guests to sign the Guest Register or the visitor s card in the pew. We pray that as we continue to celebrate Christ s resurrection, through God s Word and all of worship, you will feel God s love for you and be empowered to live as God s child this week. Today s Focus Jesus came speaking with authority and is the fulfillment of Moses prophesy of a prophet that would be greater than himself. Even demons and Gentiles recognized Jesus for who He was. Likewise, Jesus impresses the worshippers at the synagogue with His authority. He speaks differently than the rabbis and religious leaders, and He even exorcises an evil spirit. He speaks with authority and gives commands with authority, for He is the Author of life. Jesus, the One sent from God, is the Word that removes that which is unclean in us. Is there something you d like us to pray for today? There are yellow Prayer Request cards in the hymnal racks in each pew. Please hand your request to an usher before the service or hand it to them during the offering. They will give them to the pastor to include in the prayers for today. The Lord s Supper is celebrated on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month. We joyfully share our conviction that this is The Lord's Table. We receive the true Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, together with the bread and wine in a manner our human reason cannot understand. (Real Presence) By communing together with our Lord and one another: - we express a common faith that Jesus is Son of God and Son of Man - that Jesus is our Savior and only way for salvation; - That Jesus offers us His Body and Blood in a mysterious yet real way - that Christ's sacrificial death assures us of the forgiveness of our sins; - and that God is strengthening us in this Sacrament to live a more godly life and to amend with the help of the Holy Spirit, those areas not in conformity with God s will. - We declare these statements because it is our concern for people to not be hypocritical between their faith and practice. Those who share these convictions are welcome to come and celebrate the blessings of God's Table at the Altar. Persons unable to approach the Altar may be communed in the pew, please notify the Pastor or Elder if you wish this service. The white wine in the center is denatured (alcohol removed) wine. 2

Today is the first of two Sundays in which we focus on the miracles of Jesus that displayed His divine power before we end the Epiphany Season at the Transfiguration of Jesus on February 15th. We constantly face the question why Jesus performed miracles at certain times and why He did not at other times. Today we see how the authority of His teaching and His miracles draw attention to His Messianic Mission. THE SAINT JOHN S BIBLE Heritage Edition August 2014 July 2015 Building on Concordia University, St. Paul s theme of the year, The Word Made Flesh, CSP will host two volumes of The Saint John s Bible Heritage Edition throughout the entire academic year. The first commissioned handwritten Bible since the 15 th century, these volumes are available for public viewing in the Library Technology Center. During the month of February, all seven volumes will be on campus. In addition, on Mondays in the Graebner Memorial Chapel from 10:30 to 10:50 am, speakers will reflect on selected illuminations from The Saint John s Bible. LUTHERANS FOR LIFE The danger of Roe [v. Wade] is that it legalized the idea that MIGHT makes RIGHT. Authority is a word we are sometimes afraid of and don t like to hear. But that s just our sinful flesh talking. Jesus authority is something we need. 7 Today s Scripture Readings Deuteronomy 18:15-20: The Lord promised to raise up a prophet like Moses who would preach the saving Word of God. Jesus is that prophet greater than Moses. His Word is truth, it gives life and rescues us from every evil. Only those preachers and prophets who preach according to the Word of Christ have the promise of the Lord s blessing. Those who do not preach according to the Word of Christ are false prophets and stand under the condemnation of God. 1 Corinthians 8:1-13: Idols are not true gods, even though sinful man worships them as if they were. There is only one true God: For us there is only one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we for Him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and through whom we live. It is because of our faith and knowledge of the true God that we are called to put no stumbling block for faith in the path of those who do not yet know our Savior and Lord. Even though we have great freedom in the Gospel, this freedom is not a license for us to offend the conscience of a weaker brother. Mark 1:21-28: Depart, you unclean spirit, and make room for the Holy Spirit! This exorcism in the baptismal liturgy reflects the promise of Baptism that Christ delivers us from the devil. In the casting out of the demons, Jesus demonstrates that He is the Son of God and the Redeemer who has vanquished Satan. Jesus authority over the demons reveals Him as the true Savior from sin, death, and the devil s power. Those who witnessed this miracle unwittingly put their finger on where the power over Satan is found: Jesus doctrine His teaching! What new doctrine is this? A new doctrine with authority, that is to say, a new teaching that has the power to save and deliver from the power of Satan. This is what the Gospel is: the power of God to salvation. The Gospel is more than information; it is the life-giving power of God that is anchored in Jesus death and resurrection. 7

8 Catechesis Note for the Week Denying Self and Taking Up the Cross This third week of meditation upon Holy Baptism leads us into the daily significance of our Baptism: the Old Adam in us should by daily contrition and repentance be drowned and die with all sins and evil desires, and that a new man should daily emerge and arise to live before God in righteousness and purity forever. Let us unpack these words. Contrition and repentance are part of what it means to believe in Christ and let go of the self for salvation. Contrition is that aspect of faith that realizes and believes that we have sinned against the God who loves us and it grieves our heart. The New Man of faith desires to love and trust in Christ above all things. Daily contrition recognizes that we still daily sin much and need His daily mercy and forgiveness. Repentance is that aspect of faith that not only confesses sin, but does so with the conviction that Christ alone is the Savior from that sin. Contrition and repentance desires to hear and receive Christ's forgiveness. It yearns to hear Christ's life-giving Word by which faith is strengthened, comfort is bestowed, and the New Man arises. The New Man is Christ Himself in us, joined by the Spirit with our spirit, who lives joyously and confidently in the everlasting righteousness, innocence, and blessedness of the cross. The New Man is born in us in Holy Baptism and daily arises from contrition and repentance by the Word of forgiveness. This is why it can be said that the Baptismal life of contrition and repentance leads us to confession and absolution and why confession and absolution is a return to our Baptism. Contrition and repentance, the renouncing of self in confession, the clinging to Christ's Word of grace that makes us alive, is what is taught by Jesus in this week s Bible verse: If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me. (Luke 9:23 8
