So does our faith. From the Seder supper commemorating our redemption from slavery in Egypt to the meal of the Eucharist commemorating our redemption from sin to the Banquet Feast of the Lamb commemorating our eternal life with God, feasting is a natural part of the celebrations of our faith. But seldom do we think of fasting as part of our celebration. Fasting, we believe, is an act of disciplined self-denial and abasement. Fasting is giving something March 2017 Volume 24, Issue 3 by Pastor Steve Larson up, suffering through our loss, and only when it is complete do we celebrate, usually with a huge meal and the idea of making up for the time lived without the thing we gave up. Fasting has been a part of our Lenten journey from the beginning. Starting on Ash Wednesday, Christians give up something for the entirety of Lent (46 days), for the non- Sabbath days of Lent (40 days), or for certain days in Lent (Catholics give up meat every Friday). This fast is then broken on Easter Morning. Continued on page 2

2 Continued from page 1 People give up food, or certain foods, electronics or certain electronics, or sometimes activities or behaviors. Some have more recently begun adding activities (bible reading, regimented prayer, mission activities) rather than giving something up. But as long as we ve celebrated Lent, there has been a Lenten fast. What if this year, we could incorporate celebration into our fasting, linking the two as we link feasting and celebration? What if we could use the hunger produced by our fasting as a reminder to celebrate all that God has done for us? What if every time we felt hungry, or missed our electronics, or felt the effect of our fast, we used those moments to give thanks to God for all He has given us, or shared one moment of gratitude with another person, or read a verse of scripture? How might celebrating this Lent change the way you fast? Let me encourage you to consider seriously what you might give up for Lent this year. And then with that decision made, let me encourage you to turn your fasting into celebration this year. Let s see what celebration might look like without cakes and feasts, but instead filled with prayer, confession, and thanksgiving. Worship in Lent... the Symbols of Lent As we enter Lent this year, we will be looking together at the great themes of the faith through the symbols of Christ s Passion. As we look at the cross and the nails, we think about crucifixion and Jesus call to carry our own cross. As we consider the crown of thorns, we ponder suffering in the world and as part of our faith. And so through the symbols of Lent we can talk together about the themes of kingship, authority, and identity. Join us for worship this Lent every Sunday at 10:30 a.m. Sunday March 5 Sacrifice: Cross Pastor Paul Preaching Matthew 16:21-28 Romans 12:9-21 Sunday, March 12 Crucified with Christ: Nails Psalm 22:1-21 Galatians 2:20 Karl Peterson will be with us Daylight Savings Copies of the LCC Lenten Devotional Booklet are available at the Information Desk. After our usual Wednesday evening activities of dinner and bible studies, we ll gather to sing, pray, read, and enter into Lent together. April 14th, 7 p.m. 2

3 COVENANT CAMPING SUMMER Although it may be hard to believe, summer is coming!! In order to encourage all of our kids to experience Christian camping this summer, refunds are again being offered. Each LCC child attending camp this summer is eligible for a refund: $150/week, $100/5- day, $100/3-day, $50/day camp, $100/child for family camp. This will be refunded to each family by mid-summer as funds become available. As always, full scholarships are available for those who may need additional assistance with the cost. Registration materials for camp are now available on line and in the Church narthex. LCC would like to extend the same discount to your friend/guest who attends camp with you! We would like to know who is attending camp and for which weeks, so please complete the Rebate Form and turn it in to the office. You must check the refund or scholarship line if interested in either option. If neither is checked, we will leave your refund in the Youth Camping Fund. LINK to Camp Rebate Form Christian Formation Updates for 2017 With a new year, we have updated the LCC Safety Policy & documents. The changes made were related to updating terms (i.e. youth pastor to Associate to Youth), addressing food allergies, & re-structuring the document to meet our current needs. Some new items added are related to the Nursery Guidelines (14-15 yr. old volunteering opportunities) Pre-K to 5 th Grade Guidelines (release instructions) Jr. & Sr. High Guidelines (mentoring & dress code) So, for those of you who do work with our children & youth, please take the time to look over these changes, especially the new additions as they apply to you. To see the revised policy & documents please talk to Heather Larson or contact the church office. At a later date this year we will be discussing these changes in more depth during our required annual volunteer training. Until then feel free to contact Heather Larson with any questions, concerns, or comments you may have regarding these revisions. Link: LCC Safety Policy Documents ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL Sunday Feb 26 we will welcome back Steve Hall, historian and Bible scholar, to lead us in an 8-week study of the Book of Acts. Steve's classes in the past have always been informative and inspirational, as well as highly engaging. Please join us Sunday mornings at 9:15 in the sanctuary. March 12th Karl Peterson, our missionary to Mexico will be sharing with us during the Sunday School Hour. Easter Sunday, April 16th we will not have Sunday School but rather a time of fellowship together before Easter Worship. In partnership with the Hindustani Covenant Church, Covenant World Relief is able to provide gluten free communion wafers produced at the Home of Hope in Pune, India. Women who escape the commercial sex industry come to the Home of Hope to receive counseling, rest, and learn new jobs including making communion wafers. Our Deacons are happy to be able to support this important ministry by using these wafers each month as they serve communion at LCC. 3

We'll be looking at the book of Revelation, the final book of the bible. We meet right after supper at 6:45 p.m. in the Confirmation Room every Wednesday. Come and grow with us! For information contact Pastor Steve at or steve@libcov.org. News from Love INC of Lake County How do pots and pans transform a life? The answer is: they don't. That might seem like a strange way to begin an article about our starter kit ministry, but it's the truth. Pots and pans alone cannot change a life. Rather, as our starter kit ministers will tell you, lives are transformed when God makes His faithfulness known in the simple interactions shared by Love INC teams and those they serve. Every month teams from local churches use the resources at Love INC to bring dishes, pots and pans, utensils, and other kitchen essentials to our neighbors in need. They help unpack the boxes and make conversation. The teams laugh and weep with our neighbors, hear their stories, and pray with them. As one starter kit minister from Libertyville Covenant Church says, it's a chance to serve people "in a tangible way and face to face." Nothing can diminish what a beautiful thing it is when believers put themselves out there in service and, to their surprise, find that the Lord has chosen to use them in transforming a life. 4

5 Winchester House Worship GREAT MUSIC WAS PROVIDED BY OUR CHILDREN FOR THE RESIDENTS IN FEBRUARY! C O M I N G Our monthly services continue at the Winchester House Nursing Home in Libertyville. We encourage all to join the worship of God with our grateful audience, attending the 2:30 p.m. service on the first Sunday of every month. If any of you would be interested in taking a turn at delivering a homily or would like to offer special music for any of these services, please contact Maggie 847/ or maggiejohnson122@gmail.com. 7 Sensible Ladies Book Club COUNCIL & STAFF Please pray for the church council and staff. Contact them if you have questions, ideas or would like to get involved in a particular ministry. Many of our women were able to enjoy the evening Book Club at Deb Lindahl s in February as we had a Miss Julia tea party with interesting and thoughtful discussion. Thanks, Deb! A new book and discussion date have been chosen and you are welcome to join the fun. Mark your calendar now to reserve the evening of Friday, April 28th, to attend the Sensible Ladies Book Club at the home of Jill Heath, 331 Dorchester Lane, Grayslake at 7:00 p.m. The book that has been chosen is One Thousand Gifts by Ann Voskamp. In One Thousand Gifts, Ann invites you to embrace everyday blessings and embark on the transformative spiritual discipline of chronicling God's gifts. It s only in this expressing of gratitude for the life we already have, we discover the life we've always wanted... a life we can take, give thanks for, and break for others. We come to feel and know the impossible right down in our bones: we are wildly loved by God. Pick up a copy of the book now, and begin reading. It will be helpful if you rsvp to Jill at wick423@comcast.net to let her know you plan to attend. If you have concerns, questions, or advice for your Church Chair, Scott Dahlberg, feel free to call or . scodah@gmail.com Or, perhaps you want to offer to serve on one of our committees or teams. 10 NURSERY NEWS I'd like to thank all of my volunteers. You all are so wonderful! The church served at Feed My Starving Children this month, all kids under 5 stayed at church, and we had a lot! Thanks to those who stayed with these kids so that their families could go serve. Men of LCC! It's that time of year again: time to get to know each other better as we spend 12 hours in a car, time to ski and snowshoe and broomball and trap shoot, time to play games and sing songs, and time to worship together. Yes, it's time for the Covenant Point Men's Retreat! We need to know how many vans we need for the trip, so please sign up asap, but definitely no later than Feb. 17th. You can register using the form below, but please let us know you're going so we can arrange housing and transportation together. While all who can make it early will leave at 1pm, there is usually a group who leaves later as well. Remember the fun we had last year? Jay's stories around the fire? Larry showing off his shooting skills? Youngki on cross country skis? Our amazing victory in broomball (a victory that nobody got hurt!)? Sign up today and let's grow together! We are really in need of volunteers for our preschool class downstairs. Would you please pray about and consider helping out? We could use regular people that can be put on the rotation, or if you are willing to be a floater (someone that fills in on occasion), that would be so helpful! Register at: I'm excited for the new stickers that will be available in the nursery. This will be a new way to check in and keep track allergies and such. Keep an eye out for them. 10 Tricia Leach, Nursery Coordinator tricia@libcov.org PING PONG: Men of the church (and friends) are invited to play ping pong on Thursdays March 2, 16 & 30 this month. Play begins in the church basement at 7:00 p.m. This is an opportunity for friendly competition and informal fellowship. It also provides a non-threatening means of inviting friends to church activities. If you have questions, contact Jeff Johnson at jgjdc@netzero.net Join us for Wednesday night dinners! $3/person or $8/family Dinner at 5:30 p.m. Followed by all our regular programs: Kids Club, Jr. High Youth Group, Adult Study, Moms Group, Choir Rehearsal Are you wondering what is for dinner & how your family can help?
