2 LECTURE COURSES Semester-Long Courses: August 20 December 14 Foundations of Intimacy with God Allen Hood Days and Times to be determined In this course the student will study the topic of intimacy with God through the exploration of the Jesus prayer to the Father in John 17: This famous text will be used as a springboard into theology, meditation, and doxology. The course will serve to answer the following questions: What is intimacy? What does the concept of intimacy say about the nature of both God and humanity? What does it require, and how is it cultivated? What are its pitfalls? What is its outcome? The Beauty of Jesus as Bridegroom, King, and Judge Mike Bickle Fridays, 6 9pm, at Forerunner Church (no audit enrollment needed) The Beauty of Jesus as Bridegroom, King, and Judge will explore this threefold expression of Jesus heart and leadership in the End Times as He pours out His Spirit, openly confronts darkness, and establishes His throne in Jerusalem. We will also explore how understanding these three expressions Jesus heart and leadership impacts how we live and pray today and how we evangelize and disciple others. Quarter 1: August 20 October 12 Basic Christian Beliefs Samuel Whitefield The Bible tells us that the early gathering of believers devoted themselves to the apostles teaching (Acts 2:42). This was in essence the teaching of Jesus and the core discipleship material that saw the early church established in the truth as they exploded with growth. In this course students examine this teaching and place it in the context of the grand narrative of God and His people. We look at what Christians have believed over the centuries and what we should believe in light of Scripture and history. As a result, students learn what it is to be a disciple of Jesus and how to make disciples of others. Ephesians Dale Anderson The Ancient city of Ephesus, one of the seven churches in the book of Revelation, was visited by the Apostle John sometime between AD and by Paul in 52 AD [Acts 18: 18 20: 1]. Augustus made Ephesus the capital of proconsular Asia making it the seat of governmental power for the region, second in importance and size only to Rome. Famed for the Temple of Artemis (Diana), who had her chief shrine there, it was a strategic city of great importance for which God had a plan. When Jesus promised to build his church at the very gates of hell (Matt. 16:18), Ephesus would have been on his mind. Ephesus is a dramatic example of how the world will know God s people by the love they display to one another. In this course you will examine Paul s letter to the church of Ephesus while constructing an expositional outline of this powerful epistle seeking an introductory understanding into the mysteries of Christ.
3 Growing in Prayer Matt & Dana Candler Tuesday/Thursday, 1pm-3pm More than an event, meeting, or discipline, prayer is the joyful center of devotion to Christ, the fuel of missions, and the means to receiving the Holy Spirit, grace, and power. Yet many believers are discouraged in prayer and aren t sure what to do about it. They feel stuck in impersonal, inconsistent, and joyless prayer, disconnected from life and God s story. In this course we will discover and practically establish the path for an enjoyable life of prayer grounded in the Word and satisfied in Christ. Isaiah Brian Beeson Isaiah is the most cited prophet in the New Testament and one of three most cited books in the entire Bible, along with Psalms and Deuteronomy. Unparalleled in its view of the Messiah, the salvation of Israel, the destiny of the nations, and the age to come, the study of this book is a must for all serious students of the gospel in general and of prophecy in particular. This course will examine the life and message of Isaiah the prophet by displaying the book as a unified structure carrying a unified theme of God s leadership through the Branch, Israel s Messiah, as He uses the Day of the Lord to save Israel and to usher in a new dawning age the redemption of the world. Kingdom Life Brandon Hammonds Tuesday/Thursday, 10am 12pm This course seeks to ask and address the question, how is one s call to be someone of faith discerned, shaped, and sustained? The purpose of this course is to explore from the biblical and theological foundations of Christian personhood what it means to be a man or woman who seeks to walk out a life that is rooted in and seeks the Kingdom of God. New Testament Theology Wes Adams This course is a theology course, not a survey of the New Testament. It introduces the student to a basic understanding New Testament theology and resources. The course will examine the major theological themes of the New Testament, exploring both the New Testament s rich diversity of expression and the fundamental unity of its message. Romans David Sliker The Book of Romans is arguably the most influential book of the New Testament in all of church history. It is the masterpiece of scripture on God s free acceptance of sinful humanity in Jesus. In this course, students will explore the major theme in the book of Romans: the revelation of God s free acceptance that produces holy passion that eventually leads to mature obedience to Jesus. Our primary goal is to grasp and express that theme. To that end, we will study the revelation of God s righteousness and wrath (Chs. 1-3), the unchanging plan of salvation for all mankind through justification by faith (Chs. 3-4), the security of the believer in grace and union with Jesus (Chs. 5-8), how the future salvation of Israel illustrates and upholds the doctrine of God s free acceptance (Chs. 9-11), and how passionate relationships flow out of God s free acceptance (Chs ).
4 Survey of Eschatology Isaac Bennett Eschatology, or the study of the end times, is a subject that is usually far from the minds of many believers in their daily lives. However, it has a dramatic effect on our understanding of life and our understanding of God. In this course we will examine the main systems of eschatology and some of the differing viewpoints concerning the return of Christ and the Millennium. In our study, we will also see how these systems of eschatology affect both our daily lives and our understanding of who God is and what He plans to do. Quarter 2: October 15 December 14 Foundations of Grace Isaac Bennett & Sally Goode Walking in the power of grace extends to all aspects of life, from how we relate to God and others to how we utilize our resources. Through this course, students develop a proper perspective on grace as the foundation of everyday Christian living. Topics of teaching include the identity of a Christian as a new creation, God's intention for the family, and the Christian s practical response to grace. Class sessions incorporate both lecture and discussion time. Foundations of Worship Terri Terry Tuesday/Thursday, 10am 12pm This course is designed to acquaint the student with the rich Hebraic roots of Jesus perspective of worship. Topics will include Hebraic idioms, cultural background, and the Jewish perspective of a life of worship. Gospels Brandon Hammonds The humanity of Jesus is the inexhaustible treasure entrusted to us by the Father. The eternal Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us and thus every facet of His life speaks to us of His heart. This course will examine the life of Christ from the Incarnation to the Ascension as recorded in the Gospels. Students will receive a survey of the historical context as well as gain confidence in the inspiration and reliability of the Gospel accounts in light of modern scholarship. Specific attention will be paid throughout the course to teaching style, culture and the world of first century Israel. Old Testament Survey Chuck Metteer The Old Testament follows a people on their journey through the unfolding drama of the first 4,000+ years of recorded human history, revealing the heart of God for Israel and the nations of the earth. Class topics will explore the connection between intimacy and judgment from Genesis through Malachi, and gain historical background to themes concerning the end of the age. Song of Solomon David Sliker The Song of Solomon is also called, The Song of Songs or the greatest song ever recorded. A title like this, from the son of the most prolific songwriter in Israel s history from a man who had written 1,005 of his own songs speaks to the power and value of this particular song. From ancient Israel to modern times scholars and commentators have understood the underlying picture that Solomon presented to
5 us: the love of a Bridegroom God for His people. My goal is for this class to help us understand the progression of grace and holy passion, or our journey into maturity in love by grace. The Song of Solomon provides the clearest picture of this progression in the word of God. The Next Generation Lenny LaGuardia Tuesday/Thursday, 1pm-3pm A paradigm shift is crucial for those who would lead the next generation. God is raising up a generation of bold leaders and messengers equipped to impact children and youth with the gospel. This paradigm shift includes moving from more traditional methods and approaches to children s ministry to the mobilizing and equipping of a generation through well-trained and passionate leaders. In this course, students learn the necessary dynamics of providing leadership to youth and children s ministries and learn practical skills like how to build an organization, develop ministry teams, recruit workers, and personally develop as a leader. Theology of the Holy Spirit Stephen Beauchamp This course offers an in depth approach to what the Bible reveals concerning the Holy Spirit. Through studying the scriptures, group discussion, and personal research, this course seeks to develop a sound biblical theology around a foundational subject. Topics include the personhood of the Holy Spirit within the Godhead trinity, the gifts, works, and activity of the Holy Spirit within humanity throughout the scriptures, the Holy Spirit s role within the Church in the last days (Eschatology), Pentecost and the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, and are the gifts of the Holy Spirit still available today. Theology of Israel Samuel Whitefield This class is designed to equip the student with a biblical understanding of Israel s place in the plan of God. Beginning at God s covenant with Abraham, we will develop a theology of Israel that proves God s continuing faithfulness to this first-born nation throughout history. Subjects covered include the election of Israel; God s covenants with Israel; Israel and the time of Jacob s trouble; and the future glory of the kingdom. This course is an essential foundation for anyone seeking to understand the unique place of Israel in God's plan throughout history and as we approach the end times.
