WILLIAMSBURG PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 29TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME DEDICATION SUNDAY - OCTOBER 22, 2017 We gather in the name of Jesus Christ to worship God and by the power of the Holy Spirit do God s work in the world. PRAYERS FOR PREPARATION Holy God, you have made us in your image, and we belong to you alone. Therefore we offer ourselves to you, in service, love, and praise. Use us for the glory of your realm and the good of your people; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The gathering Preparing to hear the word PASTORAL GREETING AND CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH MINUTE FOR MISSION: Stewardship: Fellowship John E. Morgan PRELUDE I Love to Tell the Story arr. Wood CALL TO WORSHIP (Responsive) Leader: Sing to the Lord and bless God s name. People: Tell of God s saving power from day to day. Leader: Worship the Lord in holy splendor. People: Tremble before God, all the earth. *HYMN 401 Here in This Place GATHER US IN *CALL TO CONFESSION Leader: The psalmist tells us that God is merciful and gracious, with a steadfast love toward us that reaches as high as the heavens. Because of that love, God is slow to anger and always ready to forgive us. Let us confess our sins, knowing that God is eager to hear our heartfelt prayer of repentance. *To all who are able, please stand as we offer God thanks and praise. Bold type face indicates that the congregation participates in word or song.

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION (Unison) Holy God, we do live in the joy and wonder of your love. However, we find it so easy to be in disagreements. We take each other so much for granted. Often we are tempted to cut the ropes of love that bind us together. Other times we take life and each other too much for granted. Help us now, Lord in this time of worship, to renew our faith in you and restore our love to each other with powerful cords of compassion and mercy. Amen. A TIME FOR SILENT PRAYER *KYRIE *ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS Leader: No matter the situation, no matter the problem, no matter the trouble, God is always with us. God is always ready and willing to receive us, redeem us, renew us, restore us, refresh us, rebirth us, now and always. *GLORIA We invite any and all children through the 5th grade to come forward at this time for Sharing Faith with Children. (11:00) SHARING FAITH WITH CHILDREN Adrian Williams (11:00) WEE WORSHIP Laura Bechtler Children ages 3 through 2 nd Grade are invited to go with a leader to the Library for a special time of worship. Children will return to the Sanctuary following the sermon.

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION (Unison) THE WORD Spirit of God, enliven our hearts and minds that, as we hear the Scripture read and proclaimed, we may hear your word for us, each one individually and by name. Grant us courage to receive it, and stir in us a desire to respond in love and faithful obedience. For the sake of Christ, we pray. Amen. FIRST LESSON: Isaiah 45:4-7 PSALM 96:1-9 (Responsive) This is the Word of the Lord! Thanks be to God! Leader: O sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all the earth. People: Sing to the LORD, bless his name; tell of his salvation from day to day. Leader: Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples. People: For great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; he is to be revered above all gods. Leader: For all the gods of the peoples are idols, but the LORD made the heavens. People: Honor and majesty are before him; strength and beauty are in his sanctuary. Leader: Ascribe to the LORD, O families of the peoples, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength. People: Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; bring an offering, and come into his courts. Leader: Worship the LORD in holy splendor; tremble before him, all the earth. SECOND LESSON: Acts 2:43-47 This is the Word of the Lord! Thanks be to God! SERMON I Love to Tell the Story: Fellowship John E. Morgan

Responding to the word *HYMN 462 I Love to Tell the Story HANKEY *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH: (Unison) We trust in God, whom Jesus called Abba, Father. In sovereign love God created the world good and makes everyone equally in God s image, male and female, of every race and people, to live as one community. But we rebel against God; we hide from our Creator. Ignoring God s commandments. We violate the image of God in others and ourselves, accept lies as truth, exploit neighbor and nature, and threaten death to the planet entrusted to our care. We deserve God s condemnation. Yet God acts with justice and mercy to redeem creation. In everlasting love, the God of Abraham and Sarah chose a covenant people to bless all families of the earth. Hearing their cry, God delivered the children of Israel from the house of bondage. Loving us still, God makes us heirs with Christ of the covenant. Like a mother who will not forsake her nursing child, like a father who runs to welcome the prodigal home, God is faithful still. From A Brief Statement of Faith PRAYERS OF PETITION AND THE LORD S PRAYER (Unison) Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. OFFERING LITANY OF STEWARDSHIP Leader: Now there are various gifts, but the same Spirit. People: With grateful hearts, we dedicate, not only these pledges of support, but the gifts of ourselves, acknowledging that all that we are and all that we have are gifts from God. Leader: There are varieties of service, but the same Lord. People: Stirred by the Spirit, we dedicate ourselves to the work of Christ s church in this place, recognizing and honoring among us the array of services necessary to meet a hurting and needy world. Leader: There are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. People: With renewed conviction, we pledge to seek out and be receptive to new and fresh opportunities to make known God s message of reconciliation in this community and beyond. All: May God s Spirit work within us and among us to strengthen our bonds with one another, as we endeavor to fulfill the pledges we make this day.

OFFERTORY ANTHEM AND DOXOLOGY The Old Hundredth Psalm Tune *PRAYER OF DEDICATION All people that on earth do dwell, Sing to the Lord with cheerful voice; Him serve with fear, his praise forth tell, Come ye before him and rejoice. The Lord, ye now, is God indeed, Without our aid he did us make; We are his folk, he doth us feed, And for his sheep he doth us take. O enter then his gates with praise, Approach with joy his courts unto; Praise, laud, and bless his name always, For it is seemly so to do. For why? the Lord our God is good; His mercy is forever sure; His truth at all times firmly stood, And shall from age to age endure. Please stand and join in singing Praise God, from whom all blessings flow, Praise God, all creatures here below, Praise God above, ye heavenly host, Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. Ralph Vaughan Williams ( ) Going out to be the church *INVITATION AND LORD S DAY GREETING *HYMN 1 Holy, Holy, Holy! NICAEA *BENEDICTION POSTLUDE Toccata John Weaver The service of worship concludes after the postlude. The music can be enjoyed or used as an opportunity for prayer. You may remain seated; if you wish to depart, please do so quietly and without disturbing those who choose to stay.

WILLIAMSBURG PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH (PCUSA) 215 RICHMOND ROAD, WILLIAMSBURG, VA TEL: (757) ; FAX: (757) ; VISIT OUR WEBSITE, FOR MORE INFORMATION. WORDS OF WELCOME AND INFORMATION Welcome to Williamsburg Presbyterian Church! Any Usher (designated with a name tag) will be glad to answer your questions, help you find your way around, or help you find ways to connect with the ministries and people in this community of faith. Please feel free to ask an usher for large-print worship bulletins and hymns, directions to the nursery, restrooms, coatracks or access ramps. We offer a nursery for infants and toddlers during the worship services. Please see an usher for assistance. At our 11am worship service, children 3 years old through kindergarteners begin in the main service, and then go to Wee Worship, a worship experience designed especially for children. Restrooms are located in the Narthex and through the side doors on the left near the front of the sanctuary. An usher will be happy to direct you. If you would like invitations to special events and concerts, please sign your name and address in the Friendship Folder at the end of each pew. We will be happy to send you information and hope to see you again! For those of you with a T-coil option installed in your hearing aid, our sanctuary includes two loop systems allowing you to better understand the spoken word. Although you may find adequate reception in many pew seating locations on the main floor, the highest signal levels will be between the two lines shown in the photo (4th- 6th rows) and extends from the center aisle to the pew divider in each row. The Christian Education Ministry provides worship bags for children to use during the worship service. You will find them hanging on a rack outside the side door to the sanctuary. They include worship bulletins with space to color, pipe cleaners for busy and creative hands, and book marks to help children mark the pages for the hymns and scripture of the day. Take a moment to enjoy the beautiful display (outside the sanctuary) created from children s artwork from the worship bags! The pathology report did indicate that the left lung does show evidence of the same IgG4-related autoimmune disease as was discovered in Shelly's right lung when she had surgery on that lung on August 30th. The report also indicated that in the left lung there was some "old inflammation." Now that Shelly has received the "no cancer" report on both lungs, she has been cleared to leave New York and return to Southeast Asia. The Dawsons ask for your continuing prayers for Shelly throughout the coming months, as the doctors do quarterly medical testing and track her medical condition. All those affected by the Hurricanes and the Las Vegas Shooting. Our sick and shut-ins: Jean Hibbard, George Sperry, Carolyn Chambers, Sally Councill, Gene Hughes, Ellen Lorensen, Bill Thurby, father of Linda Thurby-Hay; Dick Marshall; Gladys Baxter, Phil Johnson, and others residing at Brookdale Assisted Living, Consulate, Patriots Colony, Spring Arbor, Windsor Meade and Woodhaven at Wmsbg. Landing and York Convalescent. Those serving our country in the military services and their families. Touch Notes from Shelly and Barry Dawson: We want to take this opportunity to offer our heartfelt gratitude to so many of our friends and mission partners around the world who have been praying frequently and fervently for Shelly's health and well-being during these past few months. We believe that your prayers have been heard by our loving God who has responded to Shelly and us with grace beyond measure. All of your prayers, your s, and your acts of compassion have been lovingly woven together by God's wisdom and power into a beautiful tapestry of support and encouragement that has lifted us up with hope throughout the past 2+ months of this challenging odyssey. Now, at the end of this particular phase of our journey, we can affirm with absolute confidence the words found in the Letter to the Ephesians, "Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen." (Ephesians 3:20-21) Indeed, in Shelly's life, and in our life together, God has accomplished "abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine. With thanksgiving for your gift of accompaniment and your partnership with us in Christ's mission in Southeast Asia. Faithfully and with Love, Shelly and Barry
