Welcome The parishioners and clergy of Christ Church Cranbrook wish to extend to you and to everyone a warm and heart-felt welcome to our beautiful church. Although the magnificent exterior of the church may seem overwhelming to some, inside our doors you will be embraced by a diverse group of individuals and families who have come together to worship and glorify God. Christ Church is one of those remarkable places where you can come worship and feel right at home. Whether your tradition is high church, low church, broad church or modern, this parish seeks to worship the Lord in beauty and holiness in many different ways. The mission of Christ Church Cranbrook is a place where The mission of Christ Church Cranbrook is to become a place where we can learn the faith, live the faith, love the people in our midst, and spread the gospel of Jesus Christ. we can learn the faith, live the faith, and love the people in our midst as we spread the gospel of Jesus Christ. Parishioners strive to fulfill this mission first and foremost through worship. Additionally, the church currently offers more than 90 programs for every age and interest, in which newcomers and cradle Episcopalians alike are encouraged to participate. 1
Our History The Booth Legacy In 1904, George Gough Booth and his wife, Ellen Scripps Booth, purchased 100 acres of land north of Detroit in what is now the City of Bloomfield Hills. The Booths purchased additional adjoining acreage over the years, finally assembling land totaling approximately 350 acres. Over a period of 30 years, the Booth family built and endowed the following institutions on this property: Christ Church Cranbrook, Brookside School, Cranbrook School, Kingswood School, Cranbrook Science Institute and Cranbrook Academy of Art. The last five of these institutions merged in 1973 to form the Cranbrook Educational Community. In 1989, Christ Church Cranbrook and Cranbrook Educational Community were designated National Historic Landmarks. Christ Church Cranbrook The earliest religious services at Cranbrook were conducted by Mr. Booth s father, Henry Wood Booth, in a tent on a hillside across the street from the current church building. Later, in 1918, a meeting house was built to meet the social and religious needs of a growing community. In 1925, Mr. and Mrs. Booth and their five children contributed the funds for the construction and furnishing of Christ Church Cranbrook. The church was consecrated on September 29, The imposing architecture of Christ Church Cranbrook is primarily English Gothic, but the excellence and diversity of the craftsmanship throughout the building speak to George Booth s interest in the British inspired Arts and Crafts Movement. Himself a former metalworker and artist/printer, he sought out the finest artists and craftsmen and women to build this church. Although most of the woodcarving, stained glass and mosaics are contemporary with the construction of the church in the 1920s, the church also contains treasures found by the Booths on their travels and given to the church. The Booths provided the church with a pipe organ built by the premiere American organ builder of his day, Ernest M. Skinner. A 50-bell carillon cast by the Taylor Bell foundry of Loughborough, England was a gift from the Wallace family. The church seats 400 in the nave. There is an additional smaller space downstairs Saint Dunstan s Chapel, a cozy place of worship. Attached to the church is a building which houses a formal Guild Hall, library, Hospitality Center, kitchen and office and education complex. A well-appointed rectory, the residence of past rectors, is located on the property. The church also owns a smaller house located close to the rectory which is currently used by the Director of Music. Another residence, a four-bedroom home, is located two houses down Cranbrook Road and is also owned by the church. Not to be overlooked is our own Sea of Galilee located behind the Rector s home and the Music Director s home. It is inhabited by several duck families who are kept very well fed by the Sunday School and Little Lambs Preschool children. 2
The Parish and Its Members From the beginning, Christ Church Cranbrook drew its membership from families of many religious backgrounds. Although clearly Episcopal by consecration and affiliations, it was seen as a church of the community open and inclusive. Though Christ Church Cranbrook started as a low church, the liturgy has evolved to include more ritual and formality. Services have always been enhanced by an outstanding music program and a worship place of unsurpassed beauty. Originally, the overwhelming majority of parishioners were drawn from the Bloomfield and Birmingham communities. Today, close to 80% of parishioners are still from these communities, with the remaining members coming from neighboring communities of Troy, Royal Oak, Farmington Hills, Rochester and Rochester Hills, Southfield and West Bloomfield. During the 1940 and 50s, the nearby suburban areas developed rapidly and parishioners at Christ Church Cranbrook supported the founding of three mission churches. Each of these mission churches is now a self-sustaining parish. Christ Church Cranbrook has also provided strong financial support and leadership to the diocese. The parish has a rich tradition of outreach both in the form of funding and personal involvement in the cities of Detroit and Pontiac. The parish has a rich tradition of outreach both in the form of funding and personal involvement in the cities of Detroit and Pontiac. During the 1980s and again in the early 90s, the parish, led by its rectors, conducted successful campaigns which raised almost $5 million for endowment and improvements to meet the need for major maintenance of buildings and equipment. More recent fundraising has financed restoration of the roof and the west stained glass window, called the Women s Window which celebrates women in history. 3
Our Church Worship Weekly Services Saturdays at 5:00 p.m. An informal, contemporary service in Rite II form with music, sermon and communion in the church. Anywhere from 25 to 60 in attendance. Sundays at 8:00 a.m. A traditional service in Rite I form held in Saint Dunstan s Chapel with people in attendance. Sunday at 10:00 a.m. A traditional family-oriented service in Rite II form for people of all ages held in the church. The adult choir leads the congregation in worship during this service, offering contemporary music on the third Sunday of the month. About 201 to 308 people attend. Children preschool age through sixth grade attend Sunday School during this service. They come into the church at the Offertory Hymn to take Communion with their families. They participate as a group in a Children s Chapel, an informal worship service that includes singing, a message and prayer. They are dismissed to age-appropriate classrooms and then returned to their parents during communion. Coffee hour follows both Sunday morning services and is particularly well attended following the 10:00 a.m. service. The Adult Forum is offered from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., providing an opportunity for reflection on various topics designed for spiritual growth. Wednesdays at 7:00 a.m. A 30-minute Holy Eucharist service held in Saint Dunstan s Chapel, followed by Bible Study. Weekdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The church is open for prayer. Other Worship Services are offered for weddings and funerals. Altar Guild The Altar Guild is comprised of volunteer women from the congregation who care for the altars and treasures of Christ Church Cranbrook with reverence and devotion. Altar Guild manages and staffs both sacristies and altars in the church, setting-up, clearing and As a member of the Altar Guild for almost 25 years, I can say it is the most meaningful of all the volunteer commitments I have ever made. The camaraderie of the members, the handling of all the magnificent vessels and linens, and the feeling of giving back to my church for all it has given to me, makes me so thankful that Christ Church Cranbrook is a part of my life. Cathie Pollock, parishioner 4
cleaning vessels and linens for all services, including Christmas, Easter, Weddings and Funerals. Altar Guild works closely with the Clergy and Verger to insure that all services run smoothly so that the congregation may participate in a peaceful and meaningful worship service. The Acolyte Corps The first thing you notice when the pipe organ opens itself up to the greatness of song, is the stately procession of acolytes, choir, laity and clergy as they enter this sacred space. Nearly 60 teenagers make up what has become the largest youth group in the Diocese. They walk in stately precision down the long, Gothic aisle and later on, make intricate cathedral turns, carry a flag or lift high the heavy banner proclaiming Christ as Lord. The Usher Corps Ushers welcome, hand out programs and seat worshipers at all church functions. They are also responsible for attendance records at worship services, the offertory, and the flow of the service in the nave. Currently The Usher Corps includes 50 ushers who volunteered approximately 2,000 hours of service in Music The music Department at Christ Church Cranbrook endeavors to enrich the worship and common life of the parish while spreading the Gospel message, through music, to our community. The various music ensembles provide opportunities for people of all ages and skill levels to share their gifts and to express their faith in the ministry of song. Music at Christ Church Cranbrook is of the highest caliber and is widely recognized as one of the strongest church music programs in the region. This dynamic, creative ministry incorporates a wide variety of musical genres offering the congregation a varied exposure to church music (standard Anglican choral repertoire, gospel music, world music, Renaissance music, contemporary music, etc.). The church has a wonderful collection of music, including a 100 rank, four-manual Skinner/Mander pipe organ; the 50-bell Wallace Memorial Carillon; a seven-foot Mason & Hamlin piano, and an eight-stop Buzzard Chamber Organ. Saint Dunstan s Chapel houses a two manual Estey pipe organ. The Christ Church Cranbrook Choir sings at the 10 a.m. worship service on all but the third Sunday of the month from September through June as well as for special liturgical events throughout the year. This outstanding ensemble consists of 10 staff singers and approximately 20 volunteers. They have toured annually to various cities, most notably to London, England to sing Evensong at Saint Paul s Cathedral this past summer. On the third weekend of the month, the C3 Music Ensemble, provides contemporary music for the 5 p.m. Saturday service and the 10 a.m. Sunday service. Christ Church Cranbrook has four handbell ensembles geared for various ages and abilities. Music at Christ Church Cranbrook (MACCC) offers one of the largest church concert series in the region, presenting a wide variety of musical programs. Most of these events are offered free of charge as an outreach to the community. Finally, MACCC supports special liturgical events throughout the year including Evensongs, Christmas Lessons & Carols, etc. Education In carrying out our parish s mission, Christ Church Cranbrook is committed to helping new and long-time Christians learn the faith. Christian spiritual formation at Christ Church Cranbrook includes a variety of relevant, highquality educational and spiritually formational programs intended to encompass all parishioners and guests. The Children s and Family Ministries is a place that is alive with faith and fun. We offer a number of joyful opportunities for our children from preschool through high school to worship our Lord 5
and learn about faith, friendship, and forgiveness. Children s Chapel, Share the Joy, Club 56, and Music & More, are the foundation classes of our Children s Ministries. We also offer Communion Preparation and every summer we have an exciting and action packed Vacation Bible School. The foundation of our adult ministry is our series of courses designed to introduce the new Christian to the basics of the faith (Alpha) and immerse them in the Episcopal/Anglican tradition (Anglican Identity). To these two courses is added a third, Giftings, designed to help participants discover their spiritual gifts and to use those gifts in the Church s ministry. We also provide preparation for the Sacraments in our Baptismal Preparation, Confirmation and Marriage Builders courses. Many Bible Studies are offered throughout the week. They include book, lectionary and topical studies designed for all levels of understanding. We are committed to providing formational opportunities that are Christcentered, biblically-based, and faithful to Anglican teaching and tradition. Pastoral Care Following in the footsteps of Jesus, we are there for those who are in need, hurt or alone. We accompany them as they journey through life s difficult transitions. We offer a listening ear, a comforting word, a tangible expression of God s love. We strive to reflect Christ s loving heart and healing touch. The Pastoral Care Ministries of the church offer parishioners a variety of ways to live out their faith and serve others. There is a great sense of fulfillment to be had in serving God through these ministries. Each time we reach out to the sick or those who are grieving, we fulfill our purpose to live out the faith and love the people in our midst. Lay Eucharistic Ministers and Readers This ministry group is composed of more than 40 dedicated volunteers who serve at all services, including weddings, funerals and other special liturgical events as needed. Eucharistic Visitors A Eucharistic Visitor is a layperson trained and authorized to offer the consecrated elements following the celebration of Holy Eucharist to members of the congregation who are unable to be present at the service due to illness or infirmity. Lay Visitors Lay Visitors are companions who deliver Altar flowers to parishioners on their journey through life s transitions. Through a listening, non-judgmental presence, Lay Visitors bring the caring presence of God to the community. 6 Prayer Card Ministry The Prayer Card Ministry is a small group of caring parishioners who meet to pray for and send handwritten cards to new members, the newly baptized and those on the prayer list. Prayer Shawl Ministry A number of CCC women pour hours of their time and prayers into knitting beautiful shawls for those who are ill in the hope that they may be wrapped in the warmth of God s love and their fellow parishioners. Baptismal Quilt Ministry Each infant baptized at Christ Church Cranbrook receives a handmade quilt to welcome them into Christ s family. Parish Health Ministry The Parish Health Ministry focuses on wellness, disease prevention, and health promotion, affirming the church as a place for healing and wholeness. Funeral Reception Ministry Four teams of volunteers are on call throughout the year to reach out to grieving parishioners and provide a lovely reception after the Memorial or Funeral Service. Career Transition Network Ministry The career transition network ministry began in March of 2008 in the wake of our declining economy. This ministry provides assistance with resumes, networking skills, and interview techniques.
Service and Outreach Along with other committees and groups within the church, the Service and Outreach Committee assist charitable organizations in our community and throughout the world. The committee strives to follow Christ s commandments to feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, and to consider the needs of children and young people. Awards are always made to qualified organizations, never to individuals. About 85 percent of our support goes to organizations operating in the metropolitan areas of Detroit and Pontiac. This committee also supports efforts in countries such as Haiti and Uganda. A dollar can buy a great deal of relief and comfort in these areas. Additionally, about five percent of this committee s budget goes toward the spreading of the Gospel, by funding institutions such as Whitaker School of Theology. Each year, various collection efforts, fund raising events and Servant Saturdays take place in partnership with other service agencies. Some of these have included: Alternative Gift Fair, Habitat for Humanity, Saint Phillip s, South Oakland Shelter, and Katrina Relief efforts saw the first Auction for Outreach that benefited four metro-detroit charities. That event was such an overwhelming success that it took place again in 2008, surpassing the previous year s revenue. Both years the auction was wellattended, giving parishioners and their guests a tremendous opportunity to support local charities and at the same time, enjoy wonderful fellowship with old and new friends. The Service and Outreach Committee works together with the Episcopal Church Women ( ECW ) to coordinate financial donations. Meetings of Outreach are open to everyone; all are welcome who wish to attend or to become a part of our mission. Sunday School has been such a blessing to us and our girls. We really appreciate all of the hard work of the teachers and staff. Rebecca is especially enjoying Club 56. She said I love the games, especially the movie clips we watch and the fun activities we do. Diane and Christopher de Movellan, parishioners 7

Finances Stewardship Stewardship at Christ Church Cranbrook is the active response of parishioners to the parish Mission Statement...to live the faith, love the people in our midst and spread the gospel of Jesus Christ. The time and commitment of parishioners to the extensive number of parish ministries attest to members belief in the goals of our parish mission. Although we face many economic challenges, our attendance continues to grow and our pews are filled with families and children. Flint Trust Income to be used solely for support of organizations outside of and external to the parish, whose purpose is to provide direct service to meet the basic human needs of the most poor, the most powerless, and the most vulnerable members of society. No trust assets may be used for or applied either directly or indirectly to the Christian outreach activities, programs, or projects of the Episcopal Diocese of Michigan or its member churches, or for any Christ Church Cranbrook parishioner, the parish operating budget, its building and grounds, its capital projects, or its internal projects or activities. Income distributions are made directly to the recipients. Diantha E. Higgins Youth Trust Income to be used for funding programs, equipment, or activities for ministry to, for, and by any or all pre-college youth, and for the purchase of capital or operating equipment for the church school not covered by the regular church budget, and for fees and expenses for programs for training teachers or students not covered by the regular church budget. Income distributions are made to the General Operating Fund. Planned Giving Trust In 2004 the Vestry created the Planned Giving Trust as a new vehicle for the preservation of capital gifts to the church. Donors to the Planned Giving Trust may designate those programs within the church that they wish to support, or they may make a general contribution. Like other parish trusts, gifts made to the Planned Giving Trust are inflation-protected. This means that the trustees are only permitted to make disbursements from the trust where there is sufficient revenue on a total return basis to keep up with inflation and still have enough income to help support the designated church program. The Planned Giving Trust provides greater flexibility while preserving this as a true endowment. 11

The Community Christ Church Cranbrook is located in beautiful Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit. This community and the surrounding area are comprised of mostly affluent single family homes located on rolling, treelined streets. The public schools are a draw to many, as they are among the best in the state of Michigan. Although Bloomfield Hills has no central downtown area, many residents enjoy neighboring Birmingham, a charming pedestrian town with a wide-range of stores, parks and restaurants. Bloomfield Hills is close to many of Detroit s cultural gems. The Detroit Institute of Arts has a world class, multi-cultural collection, which is housed in a grand museum built in Some of the other cultural attractions include The Detroit Symphony Orchestra, The Michigan Opera Theater, The Detroit Science Center and The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, which has the distinction of being the world s largest institution dedicated to the African American experience. Bloomfield Hills is located close to many highways and is bisected by Woodward Avenue, which runs from Pontiac to the north, all the way to the heart of downtown Detroit. Metro Detroit also boasts a newly-renovated and expanded international airport as well as several regional airports for convenience in travel. Detroiters take great pride in two relatively new stadiums in the heart of city: Comerica Park, home to the Detroit Tigers baseball team, and Ford Field, home to the Detroit Lions football team. These modern venues are perfect settings for fans to show their (sometimes tested!) enthusiasm for their home teams. And we cannot forget the Detroit Red Wings, the team that can claim the most passionate fans in the history of the sport of hockey! For those who enjoy a game of hoops, the Palace of Auburn Hills, home to the Detroit Pistons, is an easy drive from Bloomfield Hills. 17 The Parish Speaks The congregation of Christ Church Cranbrook has long been a community of diversified, committed, and passionate worshipers that have a vested interest in their church. A survey was distributed to all members last December to explore their needs, immediate concerns, and thoughts concerning a new rector. Unanimously they reinforced many of the same qualities and issues that the Rector Search Committee have been discussing bi-monthly since October of With the current economic crisis and recession, we not only need a rector with strong administrative and budget acumen, but a compassionate, spiritual leader who can build and maintain our current membership. The following is a summary of the results from over 200 participants, with nearly 60 percent attending services weekly and 50 percent membership in CCC for over 20 years. Answers listed are the top three rankings in order of preference. Attraction to CCC 1. Worship 2. Friendship 3. Music Most important to the weekly services 1. Eucharist 2. Music 3. 18 Rector Profile We look forward to calling a rector who will lead us and inspire us to live our faith through our active, demonstrated participation in the life and work of Christ Church Cranbrook. A rector whose presence and sense of the sacred will challenge us to address our innermost fears and doubts, secure in the knowledge that through Christ, all things are possible. A rector who will promise to make us ever mindful of Christ s commandment to love one another as I have loved you. Our rector should be someone committed to and capable of assisting members on their spiritual journey through the teaching of the word of Christ; leading Christ Church Cranbrook to serve those among us in need, as well as the less fortunate in the Southeast Michigan community. We believe our rector should work to extend our ministry into the community, seeking and building new relationships to better serve. Our rector should recognize and honor the rich history and traditions of the elegant Episcopal service as offered at Christ Church Cranbrook, yet be unafraid to seek and explore new directions of growth in our changing community and world. We would like our new rector to continue and extend our commitment to youth through the maintenance of an exciting atmosphere that instills the basics of faith from early childhood through young adulthood, with an emphasis on service. The rector should recognize the importance of joining together the religious community to address the moral and social ills that plague our community someone who acknowledges the ecumenical dimension to the church s task of equipping laity for their ministry in the world.
