1 FIRST FRUITS WE GIVE OUR FIRST FRUITS BECAUSE HE GAVE US HIS ONLY SON May 2018 Volume 21 No. 5 First Things First THE SOUND OF REJOICING Rejoice in the Lord (Psalm 33:1) Rejoice in the Lord always! (Philippians 4:4) Growing up in a small town, I often read the local newspaper thoroughly. I would investigate the happenings in our community, even the social events. Every social gathering reported had a recurring conclusion: And a good time was had by all. That phrase describes the atmosphere of the crowd gathered for the celebration of First Lutheran s 125 th Anniversary. The joyous banter throughout the fellowship hall bordered on tumultuous! The singing during worship filled the rafters with praise of our Lord. The Lord served us a feast of His Word in readings, prayer, songs, and proclamation. A good time was had by all because the Lord touched the hearts and minds of His people gathered to celebrate His goodness through the years. Looking to the future, how can we maintain that celebratory attitude? We have a joy that should never diminish. Our rejoicing, our celebration, is in the Lord and should be continual as Paul exhorted the congregation at Philippi. How can we do that? The writer of Hebrews encourages: fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has set down at the right hand of the throne of God. We look to the Lord, who conceived and completed the salvation of mankind, who conceived and completed our salvation, and we imitate His pathway of joy. He knew the cross was His purposed goal, but His endurance to tolerate its torture, shame and death derived strength by His steady remembrance that the joy of exaltation to the Father s side was His true destination. As a branch abiding in Him (John 15:4-5), we have the same destination. We have the promise of eternal life in Him who loved us and gave Himself for us. Having been justified by His grace, we may become heirs with the hope of eternal life (Titus 3:7). Therefore, we have reason to REJOICE IN THE LORD ALWAYS! I encourage you to make every effort to attend the divine worship on every Sunday possible. There is no better avenue to maintaining a heart filled with joy. The fellowship of believers gathered to celebrate God s goodness and grace toward us provides the fuel to keep joy active, vibrant and continual. There is a gospel song, based on Psalm 107:2, which extols: Let the redeemed of the Lord say so. In Psalm 107 there are four times when the redeemed are told: Let them give thanks to the Lord for His lovingkindness, and for His wonders to the sons of men! There is no greater wonder of God than His forgiveness and grace toward us. Thus, let us gather to give thanks to the Lord, to REJOICE and again REJOICE! In Christ, Pastor Grier
