1 CROSSROADS Southeastern Iowa Synod Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) How Can We Help? BISHOP MICHAEL BURK I take such delight traveling around the Southeastern Iowa Synod, visiting different congregations and ministry partners. Worshiping. Preaching when I have the opportunity. Presiding at the Lord s table. I benefit from all the conversations that take place, whether Sunday morning forums or informal visits around the edges. Open meetings of the congregation or sessions with the local church council. Some of those conversations are easier than others. All of them turn out to be a privilege. A lot of them end up being filled with laughter and more hope than you might imagine. Just a couple of weeks ago, after responding to a question about some of the most significant challenges facing the church, the next questioner asked, Bishop, how can we help? How can we help people and congregations who are struggling? That the question was asked seemed the beginning of the answer. A recognition that every member of the ELCA and the congregations to which we belong are caught up in the same web of relationships. And helping one another lies at the heart of what it means to be the church. So how can we help? We can pray. Pray for this church. For sister congregations both near and far and for the faithful servants called or elected to lead us. We can talk. Talk together with people beyond our closest circle. Talk intentionally and with care to people who hold views different from our own on matters related to our faith. We can listen. Listen with love, respect, even excitement to others who strive to follow the same call to discipleship. We can engage the Word. Together, we can study the Bible, wrapping ourselves and each other in saving story of God s love. We can give. We can give of ourselves and of our resources, hoping and encouraging that the gifts are to be shared, a portion at least to support the mission of this whole church because that too is how we help. There are many things we can do too. Including and maybe most of all, we can worship. We can be caught up in the ongoing conversation between God and God s people. We can come together regularly around the table of God s grace. We can be nourished and equipped to share the Good News, which is the point of it all. Southeastern Iowa Synod 2635 Northgate Drive Iowa City, IA Volume 23, Issue 6 July Sharing the story. Telling of Jesus. That is both the how and the why we can help. I take such delight traveling around this synod, being with the people and congregations that God s own Spirit has gathered to be the church together, for the sake of witnessing to the One who is help and hope for all the world. 2 2 CrossRoads Immanuel Goes Barefoot4Haiti IMMANUEL LUTHERAN CHURCH, MEDIAPOLIS The plight of the people of Haiti after the January earthquake moved Immanuel in Mediapolis, like many congregations, to help their worldwide neighbors in need. Through Lutheran World Relief (LWR), the congregation provided financial support as well as health kits to be sent to Haiti. Seeing the continued challenge to meet the physical needs of the Haitian people throughout the months following the earthquake, Immanuel stepped up to the challenge literally. SUBMITTED PHOTO The step came in the form of shoes. Barefoot4Hati is an effort of the non-profit organization Soles4Souls that collects new and gently used shoes to send to those in need. After learning about the initiative, Immanuel gladly goes Barefoot4Hati. In just over two weeks in April, Immanuel collected over 710 pairs of shoes for Haiti. According to Pastor Jerleen Schlesser, This is typical for this congregation. The people are generous with what they have and always try to help those less fortunate. The enthusiasm for going Barefoot4Haiti leapt beyond Immanuel s doors and ran throughout the Mediapolis community. The local bank, Mediapolis Savings Bank, sponsored radio ads and became a dropoff site for shoes. Members of the local American Legion Auxiliary also stepped in to support the now community shoe collection effort. Norman Roelfs of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Mediapolis prepares to deliver shoes to a processing center that forwards the shoes to those in need in Haiti. Praying For Our Partners The synod encourages congregations to continue praying during Sunday worship for the renewal of the church. July 4 - Central/Southern Illinois Synod As we celebrate our freedom on the Fourth of July with family and friends, let us give thanks to all the men and women who have served or are currently serving in the U. S. Armed Forces. July 11 - Salem, Spragueville For those affected by the June 17th tornados in Minnesota. May God comfort all who suffered losses and provide strength to carry on with recovery efforts. After the shoes were collected, two members of Immanuel, Lois and Norman Roelfs, loaded up their car and drove to Sheldon, Iowa to deliver the shoes to Village Northwest Unlimited. Village Northwest Unlimited is a processing center for Soles4Souls and employs 180 people with disabilities. By delivering the shoes instead of shipping Immanuel, CONTINUED on page 5 July 18 - Northeastern Iowa Synod For seminarians currently studying in Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) programs. Though the Barefoot4Haiti effort in Mediapolis ended successfully, it marked the beginning steps of more collaborative efforts with Immanuel and the community of Mediapolis. We were extremely happy with the results of this ministry, says Pastor Schlesser. This fall, as we plan for our local CROP Walk, we plan to have another drive to collect shoes for Soles4Souls. Since we walk six miles in unity with those who walk six mile to get water, it seems appropriate to collect shoes for the feet of those doing the walking. 6 6 CrossRoads Bread for the World, Heifer International Leaders Share World Food Prize WORLD FOOD PRIZE ELCA NEWS SERVICE CHICAGO (ELCA) -- Leaders of two organizations focused on ending hunger and poverty worldwide -- Bread for the World and Heifer International -- are co-recipients of the 2010 World Food Prize, the foremost international award for food and agriculture, often compared to the Nobel Prize. The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) is a denominational partner with Bread for the World, and it is a covenant agency with Heifer Rev. David H. The World Food Prize cited the effectiveness of Bread for the World s advocacy, which has achieved policies and programs that have brought hundreds of millions of people out of hunger and poverty, the release said. Under Beckmann s leadership, Bread has grown to more than 72,000 members, including individuals, 5,000 congregations and 50 denominational partners, including the ELCA. Through its members, more than 1 million Christians are engaged in Bread s advocacy to end hunger, the release said. I cannot begin to adequately express what this award means to me, said Luck, who became Heifer s president and chief executive officer in This is the absolute pinnacle of my professional life. And to share this prize with David (Beckmann), a personal friend for whom I have great respect, is an added honor. Although this is a personal recognition, it would not have been possible without the efforts of the men and women who have shepherded Heifer International for more than 65 years, and the millions of families who have been helped and today continue to help others through Heifer s unique requirement that each beneficiary must Pass on the Gift to others, thus becoming a donor themselves. This provides the dignity they so richly deserve. Under Luck s leadership, Heifer grew from a $7 million budget to more than $130 million, and she helped expand programs and projects into numerous countries worldwide, according to a news release from Heifer International. Luck joined Heifer International in 1989 as director of International Programs. The late Norman Borlaug, a Lutheran and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, established the World Food Prize in 1986 to honor outstanding individuals who make vital contributions to food and agriculture. Borlaug was once a Bread for the World board member. Beckmann presided at Borlaug s memorial service in There have been 33 laureates so far, most of them scientists. The World Food Prize ceremony will take place October 14, in Des Moines, Iowa. --- Information about the World Food Prize, including the 2010 co-recipients, is at www. worldfoodprize.org Save the Date for Fall Conference: October 17-19, 2010 Rostered leaders are invited to hold the dates October for this year s Fall Conference. This opportunity to worship, learn, and share fellowship with one another will be at the Coralville Marriott beginning Sunday evening and continuing through Tuesday mid-afternoon. The event will combine a discussion of the culture of poverty within Iowa with conversation about the ELCA s advocacy efforts and practical ideas on helping your congregation members become advocates. The advocacy conversation will be facilitated by The Rev. Drew Genszler, director of the ELCA s Washington Office. Pastor Genszler has described the ministry of advocacy as part of our gospel mandate as Christians, which can build upon the church s existing charity and service efforts. We ve got to see our Lutheran church, our Christian faith, not as a monument but as a movement, said Genszler when he became the director of the Washington Office. We can take advantage of the synergy that happens when you look at the connections between our great charitable and volunteer work, like along the Gulf Coast, and the opportunities that open up to actually change policy. More details and registration information will be available soon, but plan now to attend.

Candidate Receives Scholarship from Fund For Leaders PR. JULIE HIGGS Assistant to the Bishop Michelle Kanzaki is a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Davenport who will begin seminary studies at Wartburg Theological Seminary in Dubuque this fall. Michelle has been awarded a $5,000 partial tuition scholarship from the ELCA Fund for Leaders, a scholarship program developed to: help reduce the debt of seminary graduates, attract and encourage more candidates to rostered ministries, affirm those who respond to the call, and meet the need to respond to new and changing mission challenges worldwide. Michelle hopes her education at Wartburg will lead to her becoming an ordained pastor in the ELCA, but in the meantime she is an active leader at her home congregation and is also helping out at nearby Calvary Lutheran Church in Buffalo. Congratulations, Michelle! In addition to the ELCA Fund for Leaders, many synods including Southeastern Iowa also have Funds for Leaders. We just recently reached the threshold of gifts necessary to begin providing scholarships for candidates in our own synod, having received almost $50,000 from a combination of sources including individual gifts and some matching funds. Many of our longest standing pastors didn t face the debt load students carry now. They received their education in the days when seminary education was fully funded by the church. Those days are long gone, even though the costs of tuition are held much lower than they would be without significant support from individuals, congregations, and synods. Doug Johnson, a member at First Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids, recently crunched the numbers for our Candidacy Committee, of which Doug is also a member. At an average cost this year of $27,462 for academic study at Wartburg Seminary, Luther Seminary, and Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago... a rough estimate for the cost of a Masters of Divinity degree would be $92, Our Synod, in a December [2009] Crossroads article, reported that 70% of seminarians graduate with an average debt of $38,000. With starting salaries for graduating seminarians at $31,200 for 2010 (plus housing for pastors), new graduates often struggle to be able to pay off that debt. If they come to seminary with significant debt from their undergraduate education, the problem is intensified. The Southeastern Iowa Synod s Fund for Leaders is one way the synod is working to ease the financial struggles too often faced by candidates for ministry. You can contribute to the synod s Fund for Leaders by going to the synod s website ( and clicking on the Donate Now button and select Fund for Leaders under ministry to designate your donation.
