Sherman, TX the perspective editor s Hear my prayer, O Lo r d, give ear to my supplications: and in thy faithfulness answer me, and in thy righteousness. Psalm 143:1 How many times have I and perhaps you turned to the Psalmist or other places in the Bible for confirmation, encouragement, and direction? Really, our Christian life hinges on prayer. A prayer is a solemn request for help or expression of praise addressed to God. Our supplications are humble pleadings to entreat God for help or favor. How many times has my face and perhaps your face been wet with tears of prayer and supplication to God? To finish reading this Psalm and other Psalms, we see we are not alone as we bear our heart s needs and desires to the God of the heavens above. The Psalms are full of examples and illustrations of those who have gone on before us that have done like us today. In verses 1-6 we see the reason for prayer and supplications. In verse seven, we see the cry of the heart: Hear me speedily, O Lord, a desperate cry from a needy heart. Remember, His ear is not heavy, neither is His arm shortened, He is able, (Isaiah 59:1). Verse 8, Cause me to hear... I believe God speaks to every heart in a language they will understand if they will learn to wait and listen for His still small voice. And, in doing so, He will give direction and reveal the very center of His will if we are truly willing to listen and obey His leadership. Verse 9 is our security, Deliver me, O Lord who alone but Him is able to deliver, whether it be our guilt, our shame, our circumstances, and difficulties of life. He is able to deliver, He delights to deliver, and many times it is not deliverance by our expected or anticipated path of deliverance. He chooses His method, time, and art of deliverance to fit our very need and His will. Verse 10 is our instruction, Teach me to do thy will. That is the hard part, God will not supersede our will or our choices. That is part of our total surrender to Him. But, if we are willing, the delight of our soul is in following His will. Verse 11 and 12, Quicken me... or awaken me, liven me, energize me, to rescue me out of trouble. Any trouble and all troubles, don t be afraid to bear your heart and trouble to God and the reason is, I am thy servant. That means personal troubles, family troubles, church troubles, country troubles, you name it, God is willing to listen and help. Remember, you are His child, and it is His Kingdom, and He has promised to never leave us or forsake us and has told us the gates of hell shall not prevail against His Church. ~LWP 2 The Pilgrim Nazarene Herald Fall 2016

from the desk of the General Superintendent Rev. Stephen R. Snodgrass Keep the Baptistry Clean and the Water Warm! It was a Saturday morning when I walked into the church. The job was simple. Clean and fill the baptistry. It had been a little over a year since we had used it last, and it was in desperate need of a good cleaning. Before I could clean the baptistry, I had to clean the stairwell that leads to it from a room off the front of the sanctuary. VBS props, spare materials for a remodel project, and a few boxes of church records had been placed in the stairwell until a more proper and permanent place could be determined. All of these items reflected on the fact that our church was busy, and growth was evident. Once I had cleaned the room and the stairwell, I was now ready to tackle the baptistry. In those few months of inactivity, there had gathered a wide variety of insects that make Texas such a special place. After I had destroyed the homes of many unwanted visitors, I turned the water on and soon discovered that we had a problem with the plumbing. After much time (and breaking one of the rules that my father had instilled in me to never do plumbing on Saturday), I was finally doing the task that I had started out to accomplish. Cleaning and filling the baptistry. As I was cleaning, I scolded myself for not having the church janitors keep the baptistry in proper order. The voice of the Lord interrupted and seemed to speak to my heart. Now I have learned to listen to that Voice when it speaks. As I listened, the message was strong and to the point. There were many things that I felt the Lord impressed upon me, and most of them had to with my pastoral duties and how I could do a better job. But I think I can sum up the conversation no, it was not a conversation, it was a message, because God was speaking, and I was listening! But I could sum it up with these words, Keep the baptistry clean and the water warm! As a church leader and a pastor, I find that one of the greatest tools in the devil s toolbox is discouragement. He starts out in very subtle ways, but if you are not careful you will find yourself listening to his lies. He will tell you that with all the generational and cultural shifts in this world, the Gospel is not as effective as it used to be. He will begin to tell you that you are not as effective and before long (if you listen to him) you will sink into the pit of discouragement. Oh, don t get me wrong, I have had the father of lies whisper some of these things in my ear, but I have never believed him. It is in these times that I find myself drawn to the Word of God for direction and fresh vision. When I read in Galations 6:9, where it says, And let us not be weary in well doing; for in due season we shall reap if we faint not, I tend to believe it! When the enemy begins to tell me that the day of salvation has drawn to a close I start reading II Peter 3:8-9, But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. As I read this, I m reminded that there are still many who have not heard the Gospel. There are many who are on their way to hell. There are many yet to be evangelized and brought into the fold of the Great Shepherd, because HE said that He was not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. I m reminded that the job is not complete and I must be busy about my calling! When I m tempted to become lax in my pastoral duties and not as diligent in my witness I read, I Peter 3:15, But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear. This scripture challenges me to be ready always, and that can be interpreted no other way. I cannot allow the baptistry to become dirty and in disarray. I must as a minister of the Gospel be ready always to welcome someone into the family of God! I must be ready always to baptize them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost! I must be ready always to fulfill the great commission and do it with great compassion! Fellow ministers, today is our day to keep the baptistry clean and the water warm! There are lost souls that surround us every day with a longing in their hearts that only a holy God can satisfy. For a conclusion to my story the next day was Sunday, and my assistant pastor and I baptized three young Christians. Two were raised in the church and one was recently saved from a horrible pit of sin. As I made my way out of the water, I promised the Lord that I would keep the baptistry clean and the water warm! ~SRS Fall 2016 The Pilgrim Nazarene Herald 3

the Great Commission Dear friends of PNC Missions, What a great time it is to serve the Lord and play a small part in carrying out the Great Commission. There have been many exciting things going on in the department of PNC Missions. Shortly after camp, we received a donation that helped us purchase a new vehicle for our work in India. The vehicle that has been used had many miles on it and was needing repair each month. A new 2012 Mahindra XUV 500, has been a very useful addition to the work in India. At this time the money has been transferred and the vehicle has been paid for. For some time it has been our vision to begin a method of training the pastors in India. It is my personal belief that the future of the work depends on the pastors being educated in a manner that complements our beliefs and doctrines. Well, after much time and prayer, the Lord has helped us to begin the process of partnering with Shepherd s Global Classroom with the goal of translating their material into the language of our partner in southern India. We are excited about this project and thankful for a donor that stepped up and provided the means to make it happen. It will be a very large project and will take some time to complete, but we have started the process, and I know that God will help us! Our dear Sis. Shirley Fogleman, who serves in Papua New Guinea, contacted me following family camp and invited me to speak at the graduation ceremony at the Bible school where she ministers. I presented the opportunity to the General Board, and they agreed that we should go. Since it has been almost 2 years since we have visited India, we decided to add that to our itinerary. On November 28th, Mike Covington, Chuck Dodd and I will fly out of Dallas, TX, and begin our seventeen-day journey. We will fly to London, UK, then on to Dubuai, UAE, then to Hyderabad, India. Bro. Johnpaul will meet us in Hyderabad, and we begin the five hour journey to Tenali. On December 7th, we will begin making our way to Papua New Guinea, stopping in Indonesia and Hong Kong. We are scheduled to arrive in PNG on December 9th, and then arrive back in Dallas on December 15th. Please pray for God s protection and presence on this trip! While we are excited about the trip, we are very aware that we must have the help of the Lord in every way! From time to time I receive a news report from Johnpaul and here is one that he sent in August: Greetings in His precious name. Here, we are all doing fine by His sufficient grace. Now a days River Krishna Hindu holy dip festivals [Krishna Pushkaram] going on in Vijayawada city. Where daily 4 million Hindus taking dip in River and devoting the river, it started on 12th August-2016 and will end by 23rd August This river festival they celebrate once in 12 years. When I see the huge number of Hindus celebrate like this, my heart is filled with sadness, they are celebrating the river which is created by our Savior. Need more prayers for all of them, so that they come to know the real Creator and Savior of the world that is our Lord Jesus Christ. J.P. Thank you once again for your continued support for our work in India and also for Sis. Shirley Fogleman in PNG. As this world seems to be falling apart, we have the message that Jesus saves and hears the cry of the hearts of this sin-sick world! Let us continue to spread the Good News! - SRS 4 The Pilgrim Nazarene Herald Fall 2016

Building Up The Home Front! There are many more projects than resources to complete, but we are determined to start... and expect God to give the increase. The focus of our Expansion and Evangelism committee (or Home Missions) is to strengthen the home front. Your local PNC church will be taking a special offerring on November 20th for this cause. Please give generously and volunteer often! Harvest Home Fund Drive Thanksgiving Week Please send all offerings and pledges to Michael Covington, General Treasurer 655 W. 6 Scholarship Spotlight When I came to the Tyler area to pastor in 1995 our congregation was worshipping in the home of Angela Carpenter s parents, Jackie and Sonia. Angie was three years old then. When she was thirteen we moved into our newly constructed church building. She had never worshipped in a real church. After graduating from high school a few years later Angie enrolled at God s Bible School and College in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Pilgrim Nazarene Church awarded her scholarships each semester, enabling her to finish her studies and graduate in the spring of 2016 with a Bachelor of Arts in Church and Family Ministry. Shortly after graduation Angie married Andrew Blankenship, who also graduated from GBS this year. His father pastors the Bible Methodist Church in Talladega, Alabama. Andrew is now furthering his education at LeTourneau University in Longview, Texas. Angie and Andrew are now team-teaching the youth group at our church in Sunday School and our Wednesday night Kids Club and doing a fine job! They also helped with our Vacation Bible School this summer. Three young people from families outside our church have recently been saved. Thank you to the Pilgrim Nazarene Church for the Scholarship Fund. We are seeing profitable returns from your investment in our Bible college students. 7 Voices f r o m t h e Pa s t... t h e Rev. James Caughey Holiness your Remedy Entire sanctification is an instantaneous salvation-that act of the Holy Ghost, according to our faith, by which sin is entirely expelled from the soul, when the blood of Jesus Christ cleanseth from all sin, and includes an instantaneous power then given, always to cleave to God. Thus, an excellent man remarked: It is gradual in preparation, but instantaneous in reception; and the more earnestly we long for this unspeakable blessing, the more swiftly the preparation increases. The gradual preparation is often short, when the soul wills it, earnestly desires it, quickly abandons all for it, and prays as it should. A snake may cast its coat, but keeps its venom. A sinner may cast off much of the old man in outward and even in inward character, but if not cleansed from all sin, there is a snaky inclination in his nature that may wound others, or the cause of God, or himself eternally. That was a shrewd saying of one that a profession of religion without purity is like a fair glove drawn over a foul hand. Purity is the prime jewel of moral worth in man or woman. What is the most graceful dress humanity ever wore, if the one who wears it has a filthy person? We should shrink from such a creature; but such is he who makes a graceful profession of religion, and carries about him an unclean spirit, an impure heart; he lacks the prime jewel of moral worthpurity. Let that new convert hearken! The remains of sin, yea, the seed of every sin is within till you are cleansed throughout spirit, soul and body. That was a good remark of one, There is much of the old man in the new. Already have you been made sensible of the fact. Those seeds have taken root; they are rooted in that heart of yours, among the plants of grace, like weed-roots in a bed of vegetables. They must be uprooted, or they will destroy or dwarf the plants of grace within you. Indwelling sin is Satan s capital. He who has a small capital will keep adding to it. It is Satan s investment, and he will not neglect it; the Devil s stock, and he will watch its rise and fall in the market, close as any stock-jobber. Sin is in itself an accumulating principle. A slight cold is prone to additions. It is so with indwelling sin. Its nature is to render you cold to duty, and cold in your affections towards God and His people. It controls the fine affections of your soul as a cold the fine vessels of your body, rendering you chilly and shivering in the presence of a good Gospel fire. You have the elements of this ague ( that recur at regular intervals) within; it has begun in fact, in these incipient stages. Get rid of it. The blood of Jesus Christ cleanseth from it. The medicine is ready if your faith is ready. Why not now? All things are possible to him that believeth. May you have no rest till you are cured of these ague fits, light, indeed, at present. It would be a wonder were it otherwise, considering your present advantages. But indeed sin has a lodgment in your nature, and every exposure to evil air to bad company, and bad influence will add to it. Your ague( that recur at regular intervals) fits will increase. 8 Rev. Larry Pettit A javelin is like a spear or a lance. Its primary purpose is to cause harm or death. King Saul had just heard the young ladies singing, Saul had slain his thousands and David his ten thousands. In his heart, he imagined, What more could it be but for David to have the throne to his kingdom? An evil spirit imagined and a sinful heart enacted by jealousy caused him to act out his anger and rage and throw the javelin with the intent to kill David. As a result, a friendship, a confidence, and a trust had been shattered. This was not the only time Saul turned to javelin throwing. Only two chapters later, he was enraged at his own son, Jonathan, And Saul cast a javelin at him to smite him (I Samuel 20:33). Javelin throwing can become a habit or a way of living even though it causes regret and self disappointment. It becomes second nature or seemingly a fixed trait of one s personality. Javelin throwing became a way for Saul to handle his frustrations and to vent his anger. It became impossible for him to have a civil conversation and to be able to control his own emotions and angry out-bursts. Javelin throwing is not something that was just limited to the Old Testament days. Javelin throwers are still around today. I have witnessed javelin throwing in family situations, church settings, on the job and almost anywhere one could imagine. I have seen children, no doubt influenced by what they have seen and heard at home, throw javelins of unkind and hurtful words and comments at their siblings and peers or even at their own parents. Husbands and wives have exchanged javelins with demeaning, belittling, derogatory, and spiteful words. These javelins of words-like King Saul s javelin-once they are thrown, it is impossible to undo or call them back. Oh, there may be the sorrow and regret after it has been thrown or said, and there may even be tearful apologies only to be repeated again and again. Some javelins are javelins of a get back spirit or attitude, or javelins of always bringing up the past that are meant as digs, spite, or one s way of a controlling spirit. Either way, their design is like King Saul, a javelin thrown that was meant to bring about harm. What is the cause for such an awful condition to be so prevalent and owned by all of the human race in some degree or another? We find the answer coming from the words of Jesus Christ Himself in Matthew 12:34, O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. Matthew 12:35, A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: 8 The Pilgrim Nazarene Herald Fall 2016

and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. Again in Matthew 15:18, Jesus says, But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man. The answer is what is in the heart comes out of the mouth by way of words and also by actions and reactions, attitude and dispositions. The next question is: is there any help or hope for one who realizes they are captive and controlled by this evil spirit like King Saul? Yes, the answer is found in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. He is the sacrifice and atonement for our sins. If we will confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive us of our sins. He then told His disciples to tarry until they be endued with power, and as we study God s Word, we see they did just that; and on Pentecost their hearts were purified by faith (Acts 15:9) and cleansed from the carnal nature ( I John. 1:9). This divine work of God is also known as sanctification. The javelin throwing in one s life can be brought to a halt. If you realize you are guilty of this, ask offended parties for forgiveness as far as is possible. Ask God to forgive you, and then ask God to cleanse your heart of this awful carnal trait. If you will pray and seek God with all of your heart, He will hear and answer your prayer and bring a blessed peace and deep heart felt joy. The javelin throwing can cease. Praise His blessed name! toolbox CHALLENGE By Max Moore Recently, I spent some time digging a trench. Some would say that is hard work, and sometimes it is. But I have found my time with the shovel to be somewhat enjoyable. I have often wondered why my time with the shovel has been pleasant. Not only in this particular job but others as well. Then I can remember times when I dreaded that shovel. Maybe because the batteries were dead. The ones running the shovel. But why is it that some tasks with the same tools applied are less enjoyable than others? We humans have a thing in our spirits called emotions, at any given moment something could happen to us and our emotions can go for a spin. In one direction or another. Good or bad. We can cry tears of joy and tears of frustration and tears of sadness. Why all the tears? Tears are the water drops of growing. You cry tears of sadness for healing, tears of frustration for learning, and tears of joy for you to bloom. Your tears can be where everyone can see, or you can hold them back and let them loose when no one is present. In most cases your batteries in that shovel are charged according to your emotions. How much heart you put into your work can reflect your tears of joy when the job is done. The same applies to your learning and healing processes. I am convinced that there is a positive aspect in every situation of life. This is the reason why Jesus never really got worried about anything. He has the answers to it all. Our challenge is to ask Jesus to help us find the positive side of our situations. Max Moore is the Sunday School Superintendent at the Sherman PNC. Every Sunday morning, he presents a toolbox challenge to the congregation. This is now going to be a regular column in the PNC Herald. Fall 2016 The Pilgrim Nazarene Herald 9

From my journal... August 1st - October 31st, 2016 August 1 travel to Camp. We started August on the road with our family and four great young people. In the month of July, Clayton Skiles and Ryan Green, students of Hobe Sound Bible College, came to complete an internship with us in Sherman, Texas and Durant, Oklahoma. They were a blessing in so many ways and we appreciate their help. Later in the month, Emily Pearce (soon to be Mrs. Clayton Skiles) came and was a tremendous help to us with our VBS in Sherman. So on August 1st, we began our way in two vehicles to Dickson, Tennessee, arriving in the late afternoon. August 2-7 What a blessing it was to be at Garner Creek Family Retreat Center one more time for a wonderful family camp and general conference. This camp ground has serviced us well for the past eight years. Jeff and Angie Jackson and their staff have made us feel welcome and we consider them very dear friends. This year we were honored to have Rev. Don Myers from New York as our evangelist. Night after night God directed him, and he preached right where we live. Many received help around the altar and hearts were encouraged through the Word! Clayton Skiles and Ryan Green worked with our youth and did a wonderful job. They had assistance from Matt Potter and Eli Albright from God s Bible School. We appreciated the hard work of all our staff and helpers in making this camp a success. God s presence was close to us as we carried out the work of the 4th General Conference. With time to spare, we completed all the necessary business and left challenged in our hearts to carry out the Great Commission with Great Compassion. August 8 After delivering some of our people to the Nashville International Airport, we pointed our vehicles towards Sherman, Texas, arriving late that evening. We thank the Lord for His protecting hand on us as we travel the many miles and all of our church family arrived at their respective homes without incident. Thank the Lord! August 14 The first meeting of the newly elected PNC General Board Conference met via a conference call to discuss some pressing matters and set a date for a future meeting, which was set for September 30th. I thank the Lord for these men and their desire to see the cause of God go forth! August 17 On this day we said tearful goodbyes to middle daughter, Tara Lyn as she made her way to her first year at Hobe Sound Bible College. We miss her terribly, but want nothing more than God s perfect will for her life. When she was just a baby, we gave her to the Lord for His use and purpose, and she has brought us so much joy. As we said goodbye, we were once again reminded of how amazing Heaven is going to be a place of no more goodbyes! August 24 Under the direction of the PNC Scholarship Committee, and Dr. Dave Boardman as chair, the PNC has awarded many youth who had calls to the pastor, missions and teach, with scholarships. Many today are serving in their local churches or in a personal field of labor. On the 24th, the Scholarship committee met and awarded four students scholarships for the Fall semester. I appreciate Dr. Boardman and the committee for their good work. September 1 Clayton Skiles accepted the call to be the Assistant Pastor at Durant, OK and Sherman, TX. He arrived and has already proven to be a great blessing to both congregations. September 8-11 Revival in Duncan, OK. Rev. Harry Plank had been called to hold a revival in Duncan, OK, and started the revival on the 6th of September, but due to a family emergency had to return home. The Duncan congregation asked if we would come and finish the meeting. What a beautiful new church God has blessed the congregation with in Duncan. As always, Pastor Bill Carpenter and his wife Marsha, treated us so well. It was good to be in the home of Mike and June Covington once again. We love the folks in Duncan! It was also good to visit with Pastor Durr and his family during the meeting. 10 The Pilgrim Nazarene Herald Fall 2016

September Each year the PNC helps sponsor an event called Intercollegiate Ministerial Fellowship which is held each year in Pell City, Alabama at the Bible Methodist Campground. At this event, ministerial students from several of the Bible Colleges come and meet for several days and hear speakers and be challenged in their calling. Clayton Skiles and I traveled to Alabama, first delivering a new piano to our Jasper PNC that had been donated in Texas. We arrived late on the night of the 22nd after traveling about 800 miles. Friday morning and afternoon was spent with the ministerial students, where we handed out a nice portfolio for note taking from the Pilgrim Nazarene Church and participated in one of the panels. That evening we had business to attend to in Pleasant Grove and very early on the 24th, made our way back home. Over 1,500 miles traveled and God kept us safe! September 25 After arriving late the night before, we were excited about celebrating on Debtfree Sunday in Sherman, Texas PNC. God has been so good the congregation in Sherman over the years and they are faithful and sacrificial givers. Today, there is a beautiful church and parsonage on 10 acres of land, free of any debt. To God be the glory. September Connie and Madelyn traveled to Westlake, LA to attend and assist in the Louisiana State Inter-church Holiness Convention. They reported that God came and encouraged those who attended the convention. Thank you to Bro. James Plank for allowing the opportunity to serve and host pastor, Kennith Adamson, for your hospitality. September 30th The General Board met in Sherman, Texas for the purpose of organizing and carrying out the desires of the recent general conference. All of the board members were able to be in attendance, with the exception of Dr. Dave Boardman, who was in the middle of a transition with his work. I can report that there was a spirit of unity among us and at the end of the day, we left with a mind to work and do our best to build the Kingdom of God. Everything that we did was centered around our church s mission statement, Fulfilling the Great Commission with Great Compassion. October 2-6 Bro. Scott Turner started revival in our Durant, Ok church on Sunday following the board meeting. Sinners were reclaimed and the saints were encouraged. It was so good to get to spend some time with our long-time friends, Scott and Carmelita Turner. They are like family to the Snodgrass family. October A little over a week later we started revival in Sherman, TX with Larry Pettit. Reflecting on the revival, I must say that I believe that it was one of the most spiritually fruitful meetings in my pastoral ministry. We will not soon forget what God did for our church in those few days! We are excited about what God has planned for us in the future! This concludes this issue s installment of my journal. By the time that you read this, our country will have made some very important decisions. One way or the other, it will mark a change for the church and the people that we minister to, but it will not change who our God is and His divine plan for us. Let us continue to keep our focus and remember our mission, Fulfill the Great Commission with Great Compassion! Jesus is coming soon and we will be judged by our faithfulness! Let us be found faithful! ~ SRS SUBSCRIBE NOW... The Pilgrim Nazarene The Pilgrim Nazarene Herald is published quarterly by Pilgrim Nazarene Publishing.
