St. Peter s Union Church of Mantzville... where worship and service don t stop with the final hymn. The Reverend Kenneth L. Buckwalter, Interim Pastor Kristine K, Betz, Director of Music The Reverend Kenneth T. Melber Jr., Visitation Pastor July 1, 2018 Sixth Sunday after Pentecost Holy Communion 9:00am Made Well Jesus, famed as a healer, was the final hope of two people whose stories intertwine: Jairus' daughter, twelve years old and dying, and a woman prematurely aged from a dozen years of worsening illness. Disease had exhausted, impoverished, and isolated the woman. Flowing blood made her impure, untouchable, unclean. It would be a scandal for any unaccompanied woman, let alone an impure one, to approach a man in public. And touching him was far out of bounds. For her to even imagine taking this double risk was a sign of desperation. Whether healing came from it or not, as long as she was hidden in a crowd she could come up from behind, barely brush Jesus' cloak, and remain mercifully anonymous. Through the random press of the crowd, Jesus felt the exchange of power: Who touched me? The woman's privacy shattered as she became a public spectacle. She fell down before Jesus in fear. What would the consequence be of having tried to take something from him for herself? She could not have anticipated Jesus' response. Daughter," he called her. Before raising Jairus' daughter to life, he used the language of family to resurrect someone whose community had left her for dead. Jesus claimed kinship with a woman who--unlike the dying girl--had nobody to plead or care for her. Your faith has made you well. Faith, he called her boldness, praising her double-dare. Before Jesus told Jairus' daughter, Little girl, get up, he invited her older townswoman to rise, her dignity restored: Go in peace and be healed. Healing occurred as the flow of blood stopped, but recovery--then as now--came with being treated as a whole person, a full and cherished member of the family of God.
Gathering Some things to know as we begin... We begin with words of welcome because you are welcome here! Who is saying what and when? You are the congregation (C). C Congregation A Assisting Minister P Presiding Minister L Lector M Minister from the Congregation Please do not use cell phones during this service. Standing is always an invitation, not a requirement! WORDS of WELCOME PRELUDE Partita and Impromptu on Hyfrodol --Francis Bernard The assembly stands at the direction of the presiding minister. CALL to WORSHIP Be present today, O God, in a special way! P The word of God awaits us here; come to worship. The Holy Spirit welcomes us; gather to pray C From the routines and struggles of our lives, we come. Amid the stresses and worries of every day, we gather. P Come to be renewed in the Spirit of Christ. God is waiting to offer us a new life of freedom. C In hope, we seek God s caring presence; in faith, we dare to trust in God s steadfast love.
ACT of CONFESSION and ASSURANCE of PARDON We confess trusting that God forgives and renews. P In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen P Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. Silence for reflection and self-examination. P Reconciling God, C you seek peace and unity among us, but too often we choose walls of isolation. You seek to be one with your creation, but we turn away your loving Spirit. In your forgiving love, break down the barriers we create, that we might see more clearly your love for us, be reconciled with our neighbor, and trust more deeply your promise of eternal life. Amen P We who once were far off have been brought near to God through the cross of Jesus Christ. May almighty God grant you grace to forgive one another as God in Christ has forgiven you. C Amen. GATHERING HYMN We marvel together at the caring love of the Lord. Love Divine, All Loves Excelling Celebration Hymnal #648 GREETING, KYRIE and HYMN of PRAISE God greets us; we humble ourselves in prayer and praise. P The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C And also with you.
P In peace let us pray to the Lord. C Lord, have mercy. P For the peace from above and for our salvation, let us pray to the Lord. C Lord, have mercy. P For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the church of God and for the unity of all, let us pray to the Lord. C Lord, have mercy. P For this holy house and for all who offer here their worship and praise. C Lord, have mercy. P Help, save, comfort and defend us, gracious Lord. C Amen. HYMN of PRAISE We marvel together at the caring love of the Lord. Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee (st. 1) Celebration Hymnal #90 PRAYER of the DAY We seek Holy Wisdom. P Let us pray. O God, you have prepared for those who love you joys beyond understanding. Pour into our hearts such love for you that, loving you above all things, we may obtain your promises, which exceed all that we can desire; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. C Amen. The assembly may be seated.
Word FIRST READING: Lamentations 3:22-33 The book of Lamentations is one of our most important sources of information about the terrible conditions in Jerusalem after the Babylonian siege in 587 B.C. Though the people admit that God's judgment was just, today's reading declares a fervent trust that God will not leave them forever. L A reading from the Book of Lamentations. The text of this reading is printed on the back cover of this worship folder. L The Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. PSALM: Psalm 30 I will exalt you, O LORD, because you have lifted me up. (Ps. 30:1) SECOND READING: 2 Corinthians 8:7-15 In a world where compassion burns out and people may limit their concerns to problems in their own backyards, Paul urges the Corinthian church to support the Macedonians. L A reading from Second Corinthians. The text of this reading is printed on the back cover of this worship folder. L The Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God.
WELCOMING the GOSPEL We welcome the good news of a Lord who knows what sheep are like. What a Mighty God We Serve Celebration Hymnal #672 GOSPEL: Mark 5:21-43 Jairus, a respected leader, begs Jesus to heal his daughter. A woman with a hemorrhage is ritually unclean, treated as an outcast in Jewish society. Both Jairus and the unnamed woman come to Jesus in faith, believing in his power to heal and bring life out of death. P The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the 5 th chapter. C Glory to you, O Lord. The text of this reading is printed on the back cover of this worship folder. P The Gospel of our Lord. C Praise to you, O Christ. Please be seated at the direction of the presiding minister. GOOD NEWS! Sermon After the sermon the assembly stands for the Hymn of the Day. HYMN of the DAY We proclaim our faith in a deeply caring God. Great Is thy Faithfulness Celebration Hymnal #139
NICENE CREED P We are God s people through our baptism into Christ. Living together in trust and hope, let us confess our faith. C We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.
PRAYERS of INTERCESSION We pray for God s world and God s people. M Growing in the soil of the Spirit, let us pray for the church, the world, and all who seek the richness of life in God. A brief silence. M O God, your steadfast love never ceases and your mercies never come to an end. Bless your church with leaders whose lives will reflect the abundance of your compassionate love in their ministry. Gracious God, C hear our prayer. M O God, you bring healing to the nations and peace to all peoples. Guide our elected leaders, and all the people of our country, that we would be moved to help those who seek freedom and justice. Gracious God, C hear our prayer. M O God, you are the strength of all who seek you and the rest of all whose souls wait quietly for you. Comfort all who suffer with chronic pain and illness (especially), that they would know the tender touch of your healing hand. Gracious God, C hear our prayer. M O God, you are the giver of every good and perfect gift. Help the members of this congregation to share from their abundance of resources, so that the needs of our community will be met equitably. Gracious God, C hear our prayer. Here other intercessions may be offered. M O God, your children cry no cry that you do not hear and shed no tear that you do not see. Touch the lives of those who grieve losses (especially), and keep us in communion with all the saints in your eternal embrace. Gracious God, C hear our prayer. M Hear us as we pray, living God, and in your mercy give us all good things, for the sake of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. C Amen.
SIGNS OF PEACE The peace that Christ gives to us we share with others. P The peace of the Lord be with you always. C And also with you. OFFERING We offer our time, talents and treasures to God. OFFERTORY No Man is An Island ~J. Whitney/A. Kramer OFFERING SONG We Give Thee but Thine Own (sts. 1, 2, 4) CCLI #
OFFERTORY PRAYER P Let us pray. O Guardian of our souls, we give thanks for your watchful care. We are grateful for the many ways you offer healing and renewal. We are delighted with the opportunity to return, with glad and generous hearts, the love you have given us. C We praise you with our offerings and by rededicating our time, talents and treasures to the ministry of shepherding the lost of your world. Amen. Meal THANKSGIVING at the TABLE Bread, cup, and the promise of presence Jesus is with us. P The Lord be with you. C And also with you. P Lift up your hearts. C We lift them to the Lord. P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C It is right to give our thanks and praise. P It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ. Fulfilling the promise of the resurrection, you pour out the fire of your Spirit, uniting in one body people of every nation and tongue. And so, with Mary Magdalene and Peter and all the witnesses of the resurrection, with earth and sea and all their creatures, and with angels and archangels, cherubim and seraphim, we praise your name and join their unending hymn:
C (Spoken) Holy, Holy, Holy: Lord God of Hosts, Heaven and earth are full of your glory; Glory be to you, O Lord Most High. Amen. P Holy, mighty, and merciful Lord, heaven and earth are full of your glory. In great love you sent to us Jesus, your Son, who reached out to heal the sick and suffering, who preached good news to the poor, and who, on the cross, opened his arms to all. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. Pour out your Holy Spirit on us and on all your faithful people. Bless this bread and this fruit of the vine, that they might refresh us at this table and renew us as Christ s body in the world. C Amen. LORD S PRAYER We pray as Christ taught us. P C Gathered by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen..
BREAKING the BREAD We begin the sharing as Jesus did. P The table of life is spread before you. Feast on the goodness and mercy of God. C Thanks be to God. The assembly may be seated. COMMUNION HYMN We honor Jesus, our sacrificial lamb, with a special song. Lamb of God (st. 1) Celebration Hymnal #302 DISTRIBUTION Jesus shares the bread of life and cup of blessing with us. Sharing the Bread and Cup All baptized Christians are welcome to receive the Sacrament of Holy Communion. We believe and teach that in the Holy Communion the crucified and risen Christ is present, giving his true body and blood as food and drink. This real presence is a mystery. After the confirmands and their families have been communed at the altar rail, the rest of the assembly will be communed at your pew. POST-COMMUNION PRAYER We give thanks for this gift of life. The assembly stands at the direction of the presiding minister. P Let us pray. C Almighty God, we thank you for your great mercy given to us in this sacrament, whereby we are made partakers of Christ and all his benefits. So enrich us by your Holy Spirit that the life of Jesus may be seen in our lives, and all our days may be spent in your love and service; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Sending COMMISSIONING and BLESSING We hear the call to serve and are blessed with power to do so. P Go out into God s pastures; they are everywhere. There is food enough for all to share. C A table is prepared for us and all people; we will invite others to God s feast. P Let the still waters run deep within you. God has promised and abiding presence. C We will listen for the Savior s voice. We will trust God to guide us. P Go out to live courageously and give abundantly; Christ s life and love empower you. C Surely goodness and mercy will follow us; we will dwell with God even as we serve humanity. Amen. P The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord s face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. C (Threefold Amen/sung) SENDING HYMN Our voices blend to rejoice in God. Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory Celebration Hymnal #804
