St. Peter s Union Church of Mantzville... where worship and service don t stop with the final hymn. The Reverend Kenneth L. Buckwalter, Interim Pastor Kristine K, Betz, Director of Music June 11, 2017 Holy Trinity Sunday Outdoor Worship Service 9:00am Welcome to Worship this Day! Though the word trinity is not found in the Scriptures, today s second reading contains the apostolic greeting that often begins our worship: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. In the gospel reading Jesus sends his disciples forth to baptize in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. And, in the first reading we are treated to a creation account that has a creator, spirit and word. Far from a doctrine, the Trinity expresses the heart of our faith: we have experienced the God of creation made known to us in the living Word, Jesus Christ, and present with us always through the breath of God, the Holy Spirit. So, it makes sense that the Trinity would be with us throughout our worship as well: in the word and sacraments, the creed, and the sending out into the world to bless as we have been blessed. Some things to know as we begin... We begin with words of welcome because you are welcome here! Who is saying what and when? You are the congregation (C). C Congregation A Assisting Minister P Presiding Minister L Lector Please do not use cell phones during this service. M Minister from the Congregation Please note that standing is an invitation, not a requirement!
Gathering WORDS of WELCOME PRELUDE MUSIC The assembly stands at the direction of the presiding minister. ACT of CONFESSION and ASSURANCE of PARDON We confess trusting that God forgives and renews. P Holy, living and loving God, hear us as we pray. A For the times we have failed to think of the harm done to air, water, land, plants, and animals, C Lord have mercy. A For failing to conserve resources for generations yet to come, C Lord have mercy. A For ignoring our civic responsibilities, C Lord have mercy. A For allowing ourselves to be lured into a careless use of our wealth by a consumer-driven culture, C Lord have mercy. A For not living more simply so others could simply live, C Lord have mercy. A For failing to ask for forgiveness from God and creatures, C Lord have mercy. A For not being thankful for the many gifts God has given, C Lord have mercy.
P God says: "Those who love me, I will deliver; I will protect those who know my name. When they call to me, I will answer them, I will be with them in trouble, I will rescue them and honor them. With long life I will satisfy them, and show them my salvation." (Psalm 91:14-16) C Amen. Thanks be to God! GATHERING HYMN We marvel together at the caring love of the Lord. They ll Know We Are Christians Located in back of the bulletin LITANY, PRAISE and PRAYER God greets us; we rejoice and humble ourselves in prayer. P The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C And also with you. A Let us give thanks for the East, for the ancient hills and valleys and streams without end, for the green Atlantic from the reaches of Maine to the Florida Keys, for larch and hemlock, for black bear and mountain trout, for cardinals and eastern bluebirds, for cows in the barn and heat in the hayfields of late August: C We bless you, O God, for the East. A Let us give thanks for the West, for soaring mountains and searing deserts, for waters roaring into the Pacific Ocean, for Columbia River salmon, snow buntings and western meadowlarks, for ponderosa pine, for the mists of the Oregon coast and for the Olympic peninsula: C We bless you, O God, for the West. A Let us give thanks for the North, for the bright band of prairie and wheat fields stretching across the land, for jayhawk and loon, for the badlands of the Dakotas and the lakes of Minnesota, for northern pike and steeleye, for winding two-lane blacktops in the heart of Wyoming.
C We bless you, O God, for the North. A Let us give thanks for the South, for the broad Mississippi delta and the great Smokey Mountains, for the bayous of Louisiana, for magnolia trees, for the kiskadee and egret, for catfish and parrotfish and for the cotton and the colors on the sands and strands of the southland: C We bless you, O God, for the South. HYMN of PRAISE Before You, Lord, We Bow We rejoice before God over the gift of life and land. CCLI #
P Let us pray. Holy, Triune God: all things live and move and have their being within your relations. You create Day and Night, Sky, Earth and Sea. You make Earth to bring forth plants yielding seed and trees bearing fruit. You set the sun, the moon and the stars in their orbits, and let them measure the passage of time. From the waters and from the earth you bring forth living creatures of unfathomable beauty and variety. And you make us. You make us in your image, with power and responsibility to fulfill the good in all the great web of life. Gather us with all creation into the perfection of your hallowed rest; in the name of Jesus, who made you known to us as no one else ever had. C Amen The assembly may be seated. Word FIRST READING: Genesis 1:1-2:4a The first creation story reached its current form during the crisis of the Babylonian exile of the people of Israel. God, not their captors God (Marduk), was responsible for their existence. God created women and men as rulers over creation, to preserve and protect it. God also rested on the seventh day, hallowing that day forever as the Sabbath. L A reading from Genesis. After the reading, the following is said. L The Story of God s Good Creation. C Thanks be to God, our Creator and LORD.
THE PSALM: Psalm 8 How majestic is your name in all the earth. (Ps. 8:1b) L A reading from the Psalms. After the reading, the following is said. L The Song of God s beautiful Creation. C Thanks be to God, who has created all things good. SECOND READING: II Corinthians 13:11-13 Paul closes a challenging letter to the Corinthians with an appeal to Christian fellowship grounded in the triune harmony of Christ s grace, God s love and the Spirit s partnership. L A reading from Second Corinthians. L The Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. After the reading the following is said. WELCOMING the GOSPEL We welcome the good news of a Lord who knows what sheep are like. How Majestic Is Your Name Located in back of the bulletin GOSPEL READING: Matthew 28:16-20 After his resurrection Jesus summons his remaining disciples and commissions them to baptize and teach all nations in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. 8 Prayer P Let us pray. Dear Jesus: Thank you for mothers and for everyone who has ever cared for us with a mother s love. Care for them as they care for us so that they will always know they are loved, too! C Amen. Sermon And It Was Very Good! After the sermon the assembly stands for the Hymn of the Day. HYMN of the DAY We proclaim our faith in our Great, Great God. C I believe in God the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. M Sisters and brothers of the Savior, do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? C I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
M Holy family of saints, do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? C I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. We are delighted with the opportunity to return, with glad and generous hearts, the love you have given us. C We praise you with our offerings and by rededicating our time, talents and treasures to the ministry of shepherding the lost of your world. Amen PRAYERS of INTERCESSION We pray for God s world and God s people. P Made alive to God in Christ Jesus, let us pray for the church, those in need, and all of God's creation. A brief silence. Each petition ends: Hear us, O God. The assembly responds: Your mercy is great.
