T F hank you for worshiping with us this morning. We extend a special welcome to our guests and ask that you complete a blue or yellow visitor s card and place it in the offering plate. or Children: We have trained nursery staff (paid nursery attendant as well as adult volunteers) for children ages 0-3. During our building renovation and construction project, the nursery is located across the street at Trinity Chapel, 10 West Church Street. Enter by front center door of the Chapel or the via the left side walkway entrance of the Chapel. Children age 4 through 2nd grades are welcome to participate in Children s Church which follows a special Children s Thought for the Day. Children s Church is also located in Trinity Chapel during construction. The teachers escort the children to the Chapel after the Thought for the Day and parents will pick their children up in the Chapel after the 10:30 service has ended. Children are also welcome to remain in the sanctuary with their parents. Children s programs, books, crayons and colored pencils are available in the rear of the sanctuary near the welcome table. I n the pew racks are folders with information about the various aspects of the service. If you are visiting, please feel free to reach out to someone sitting near you and ask them questions about the service. Many of our visitors ask us about the time of offering. This is a time in our service when we respond to God s gifts of love by offering the gifts of our lives. For many of us, this is when we make a financial gift towards the ministries and programs of our church. We also use this time to ask God how we might use the gifts of our hands and hearts in sharing God s love. If you are visiting, there is no obligation to give a financial gift. We are just glad you are worshiping with us. A W ll are invited to Trinity Chapel for refreshments and conversation following the service. e ask that you please silence your cell phones during our worship service. We also ask that you refrain from applause after our choirs sing or the bell choirs play and allow the music to resonate in the quiet of the sanctuary and in your hearts. Our musicians are playing and singing for the glory of God. They know you appreciate their efforts and their gift. T Thank you. here is much information about the church in this bulletin and our website: Donate online by scanning this code: FELLOWSHIP TIME: During construction, we will enjoy our after church fellowship in Trinity Chapel. Would you consider sponsoring coffee hour? Maybe as a time to celebrate a birthday or an anniversary? There is a new sign- up sheet in the East room of Trinity Chapel. We need sponsors for dates through September. During construction, we ask that you help us be green by bringing your own travel mug/cup with lid for coffee and drinks during fellowship time.
EVANGELICAL REFORMED CHURCH United Church of Christ - An Open and Affirming Congregation - July 9, 2017 Fifth Sunday After Pentecost 10:30 a.m. The numbered hymns are from The New Century Hymnal All who are able may stand. Bold print indicates responses by all Chimes Concert at 10:00 a.m. from Trinity Chapel s steeple Greetings and Announcements Prelude Call to Worship and Opening Prayer People of God, come gather here to praise our God; for the one who so delighted in creating all that is abides with us and within us today. Our hearts are filled with gladness. Let us delight in this community and the warm and loving relationships that grow within it. Our hearts are filled with gladness. Let us remember Christ who loved sharing stories and bringing healing and wholeness to all he encountered. Our hearts are filled with gladness. Let us feel the embracing goodness of the Spirit who leads us toward a future of justice and joy. Our hearts are filled with gladness. and so with hearts filled with gladness and gratitude joy we come to worship you God, lover of all that is and will be. Amen. Opening Hymn Rejoice, You Pure in Heart - No. 55 Call to Confession Prayer of Confession (unison) We regret that in the busy-ness of everyday life we forget to look for everyday blessings and celebrate them. We acknowledge there are times when we get in our own way, we build road blocks on paths we know will lead to happiness, and railroad others who would invite us into loving and joyful relationship.
We flabbergast ourselves at our ability to choose misery over gladness. We admit there are times we compare ourselves to others and become jealous and resentful of what we see. We confess that there are times we deflate other people s joy and delight through negligence, impatience, or spite. We fall into the folly of believing we have to earn your grace by hard work and self-deprecation. We make silly choices and forget to laugh at them. (silence) Assurance of Pardon God is saving all of us, no exceptions. We are all saved in spite of ourselves, good and bad alike. We are God s beloved people, God delights in us and loves us always. God s grace is eternal and we are restored to life, thanks be to God. Amen. Thought for the Day for Children The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. (Teachers and children ages 4 through 2 nd grades may be dismissed for Children s Church, located in the back left classroom of the Kindergarten to 2 nd grade classroom in Trinity Chapel.) Hymn I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say - No. 489 stanzas 1,2,3,4 The Scriptures Genesis 24:34-38, 42-49, OT page 20 Matthew 11:16-19, NT page 11 Reader: The Word of God for the people of God. All: Thanks be to God. Sermon Pastoral Prayer
Prayer Response Hear Our Prayer, O God - No. 769 Hear our prayer, O God, hear our prayer, O God; Incline your ear to us, and grant us your peace. Offering of Tithes, Gifts and Lives to Christ s Service Offertory Presentation of Gifts Offertory Response - Doxology 778 Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise God, all creatures here below; Praise God for all that love has done; Creator, Christ, and Spirit One. Prayer of Dedication (in unison) We thank you, God, for all you provide. We are delighted by the gifts we receive and delight in being your people on Earth. We dedicate ourselves to serving and loving your world. Amen. Closing Hymn O Come to Me, You Weary - No. 484 Benediction Threefold Amen Postlude - No. 812 The flowers on the altar today are in celebration of our 67 th wedding anniversary by Jack Doll. The yellow rose bud on the stand is in memory of all those who have served and are currently serving in the military and is placed by Pat Hevner. If you are interested in sponsoring the yellow rose, please contact the church office. Attendance Last Sunday: 8:30-15; 10:30 90 Every Sunday at 10:30
WORSHIP NOTES FOR July 16 The family saga in Genesis 25: continues with struggles between siblings who seek advantage over one another. What good news can there be for such a house divided? God s word is counsel for navigating the tensions and struggles of community. God s steadfast love offers forgiveness that frees from the bondage of past errors. God s Spirit is generous, providing abundant opportunities for growth. God s generous and surprising ways are addressed in Jesus parable of the sower, found in Matthew 13:1 9, God sows the seed of God s word generously among all people. The work of God s realm will yield a certain harvest, despite the tensions and struggles among those who receive the word. Anticipating a stay in the hospital? Please call the Church Office at If you are admitted unexpectedly, please have a family member or friend notify the office. Hospital and Prayer List Your pastor wants to be available when members of ERUCC are in the hospital. Please let us know so that we can visit with you and your family and provide support. At 9:30 a.m. we will have one multi-level class for preschool through middle school ages. We will meet in the K- 2 nd grade room. High schoolers can either go to Sunday Serendipity or join this multi-level class. Assisted Listening Devices The assisted listening devices are currently not operational. Jeff Schaeberle is working hard to bring them back to working order. We thank you for your patience. BUILDING NEEDS Would You Consider a Gift? Air conditioning repairs for main sanctuary A few days before Easter, we learned that one of two air handlers for the sanctuary was no longer able to be repaired. The air conditioning in the sanctuary was installed in 1987 as a gift and it has served us well. As this is an unbudgeted expense, we would appreciate any extra mile gifts towards replacing the air conditioning. We re looking at around a $45,000 price tag. We have received $4,500 toward this project and the donors would like to challenge members of the congregation to consider a second-mile gift towards replacing the air handlers. ANNOUNCEMENTS Vacation Bible School Mark your calendars now! Vacation Bible School will be August 7-11 from 9 a.m. to Noon in Trinity Chapel. Ages 4 years old through 6 th grade are welcome.
