19 New Courses AMXTIAN , Christianity in Black and White: Racism and Religion in the American South This seminar will investigate literary and artistic representations of the American South with two questions in mind: how have white southern Christians turned Christianity to the task of constructing race and racial hierarchy, and to the task of underwriting racist violence? And how have black Christians--writing from multiple locations, the American South and North, as well as abroad-- deployed Christianity in acts of resistance, and in reframing those constructions of race and racism? Authors considered include Lillian Smith, Georgia Douglas Johnson, Ellen Gilchrist, Julia Peterkin, W. E. B. DuBois, William Faulkner, William Wells Brown, NEWTEST 776/CHURHST 767: This course introduces students to the theology, psychology, and practices of reconciliation. By examining the nonconscious forces (both individual and social/structural) that perpetuate inequality between cultural groups, this course addresses the ways in which power discrepancies impede reconciliation. This course equips students to assess their own passive and active contributions to discord, evaluate the individual and social/structural factors that impede reconciliation in their own ministry context, and develop a theological and practical strategy to begin to dismantle these factors. PARISH 764: This course will closely read poetry that engages biblical and Christian theological themes. We will also gain rudimentary knowledge of poetic form (in part through writing in those forms). We will read poems found in the Bible, poems written in the twenty-first century, and poems written in between -- but we will focus on recent poetry. PARISH 788: Pine Ridge Indian Reservation sits in the poorest county in the U.S. Unemployment runs over 80%. Health outcomes are dismal. In the Western Hemisphere, only Haiti has a lower life expectancy. Pine Ridge was also the site of the 1890 Wounded Knee Massacre, the effective end of the protracted struggle of the Indians of the Great Plains to preserve their cultures in the face of manifest destiny. Pine Ridge is extreme, but its story is common. Drawing principally on American Indian literature from the West and on historical works and primary sources this course explores the contemporary realities of Native American life and traces these realities back into the nineteenth century, posing questions about the long-term horizons of colonialism, Christian missions, and cultural conflict. XTIANETH 956: Examines and explores philosophical and theological paradigms, methods and contemporary debates about the nature of Christian ethics 19 12/14/2015

20 XTIANTHE : Please see ACES for course description and syllabus XTIANTHE 843: Liberation theologies endeavor to interpret Christian faith from the underside of history. The United States has always been contested terrain in which religion has been used to legitimize often violent and destructive social arrangements. Many oppressed communities in the United States have historically engaged theological reflection and action that resists the status quo of human subjugation that is evident in, for example, the destruction of native peoples and African enslavement. The purpose of this course is to visiblilize and explore the theological imagination and moralscapes that emerge from minoritized racial/ethnic, gender, class, and sexual communities in the United States in ways that interrogate unexamined biases in dominant theological inquiry in order to engender faithful reflection and response to the marginalized in church and society. This XTIANETH 807. "Theological Bioethics" This course takes up questions about life, community, health, suffering, and death, with particular attention to medical systems and practices in the United States. We examine how those question are addressed (or not) in the the typical discourses of bioethics, but we focus particularly on theological and pastoral approaches. Often the course will use the anthology, On Moral Medicine (Eerdmans) as an anchoring text, and other readings may include essays, novels, and poems. Prerequisites: Christian Theology 755 and Christian Ethics /14/2015
