1 Receiving & Releasing the Holy Spirit ONE THING The people God chooses, He always bruises before He greatly uses. 1. RESIDING - The Holy Spirit INDWELLS EVERY Believer Romans 8:9 (ESV) 9 You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. 2 Corinthians 1:21-22 (ESV) And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, and who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee. 2 Corinthians 5:5 (ESV) He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee. Romans 8:16 (ESV) The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 2. ABIDING - The Holy Spirit ENABLES Believers to LIVE the Christ Life 1 John 2:6 (NLT) 6 Those who say they live in God should live their lives as Jesus did. Jesus taught us to ABIDE in Him John 15:4 5 (ESV) 4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine; you

2 are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. John 15:7 8 (ESV) 7 If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. The Indwelling Holy Spirit is the spring of water that ALWAYS quenches our thirst!!! John 4:13 14 (ESV) 13 Jesus said to her, Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life. The Holy Spirit ENABLES us to life the Christian life! Galatians 3:1 3 (ESV) 1 O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? It was before your eyes that Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified. 2 Let me ask you only this: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by hearing with faith? 3 Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh? Our Abiding in Him produces His fruit in us! Galatians 5:22 23 (ESV) 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. We are the branches in which Jesus produces Himself! John 15:1 3 (ESV) 1 I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you.

3 First there is RESIDING the Holy Spirit INDWELLS Then there is ABIDING the Holy Spirit ENABLES Then comes 3. PRESIDING - The Holy Spirit EMPOWERS Believers to MINISTER the Christ Life To Preside means, To be in a position of control; to serve as chairperson John 7:37 39 (ESV) 37 On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water. 39 Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified. Acts 1:8 (ESV) But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth. How do we move into this empowerment? Even though every believer has the INDWELLING Holy Spirit, not every believer has the OUTPOURING Holy Spirit. The EMPOWERMENT of the Holy Spirit is when He moves from RESIDENT to PRESIDENT. When God moves from CO-PILOT to PILOT Matthew 16:24-25 (ESV) Then Jesus told his disciples, If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. Mark 8:34-35 (ESV) And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, If anyone would

4 come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel s will save it. Luke 9:23-24 (ESV) And he said to all, If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. Luke 17:33 (ESV) Whoever seeks to preserve his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life will keep it. Galatians 2:20 (NIV) I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. Romans 12:1 (NIV) Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God this is your spiritual act of worship. ENTER HIS REST Hebrews 4:9-11 (ESV) So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, for whoever has entered God s rest has also rested from his works as God did from his. Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience. Philippians 2:12 13 (ESV) 12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure. 1 Corinthians 12:8 11 (ESV) 8 For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 to another the

5 working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills. Moses crossing the Red Sea Guides us into all truth John 7:38-39 (ESV) Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water. Joshua crossing the Jordan River Guides us to fulfill our Kingdom destiny ENABLES us to LOVE the Lord with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength Produces within us the CHARACTER of Christ The FRUIT of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23) EMPOWERS us to LOVE our neighbors as ourselves Produces through us the COMMISSION of Christ The GIFTS of the Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:8-10)
