6 Classroom Objectives Our Youth Sunday School objectives include: Help children feel safe and loved in a faith community Help children experience the unconditional love of God Help children know that God s forgiveness is a free gift Help childrenunderstand Jesus role as Savior Help children learn the Bible, it s history and how to use it Help childrendevelop their own daily prayer life Help children appreciate the seasons and traditions of the church Help children want to live as Christ did Help children develop a Christian group of peers Encourage parents to participate in their child s spiritual learning Enrollment Cards Completion of an enrollment card is required for each student at the beginning of the Sunday School year (cards are provided by teachers). Please relay any addresses or telephone number changes that occur during the year in writing to the church office (or your child s teacher) so that our records are kept current. New Attendance Award Amendment The Sunday School calendar year is September through May. Attendance records are maintained by each Sunday School teacher and faithful attendance awards are awarded annually to those who have no more than two (2) excused sick days and no more than one (1) unexcused absence within the year. An excused absence will also be given when a child submits literature form another church they visited or a note from a parent with the date and church they attended on the Sunday absent. Another attendance award will also be given to those who have perfect attendance in the summer Sunday School session, Junes through August, with no absences. Arrival and Dismissal Sunday School begins at 9:45 a.m. each Sunday morning. Parents should not leave their child at the church until their teacher is present for safety reasons. Dismissal of classes is at 10:45 a.m. Teachers for fourth graders and below are instructed to not allow a student to leave their classroom until the student s parent or guardian arrives to meet their child. 6

7 Offerings A free will offering is collected each Sunday during classes. Offerings are used for the purchase of the Sunday School curriculum and special mission projects. Bibles Any student from first grade through sixth grade is eligible to receive a Bible after attending Sunday School for four Sundays. A children s Bible will be presented by our church to those eligible during a Sunday worship service. Children are encouraged to read their Bibles and to bring them each Sunday. Bibles are used by students during Sunday School classes. 8 Parent Involvement We welcome and encouraged interested parents and guardians to volunteer in our Sunday School program. Please contact any member of the Christian Educations Committee for more information regarding volunteering in the Sunday School program. Special Sunday School Programs Special Sunday School programs are held throughout the school year. Some of the programs include the fall Kick-off breakfast, Christmas Play and Youth Sunday. Students are encouraged to participate in these programs and appropriate notification will be sent to parents or guardians. Medical Needs Parents or guardians of children with special medical needs should present this information in written form to their child s teacher. In the case of illness or injury to a child, the parents or guardians will be contacted. In extreme emergencies, if parents are not available, the child will be taken to the emergency room at a local hospital. Child Abuse Prevention Measures No adult will be permitted to teach Sunday School unless they have been a member of our church for at least six months. All teachers and teacher aides must complete the Child Abuse (Act 151) and Criminal Check (Act 34) clearance through the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Classroom Behavior Expectations and Management Policy Our classroom goal is to enable all students to participate in a positive learning environment. This includes helping children learn to manage their own behavior. When students are unable to control their own behavior, classroom teachers have been instructed to discipline students by first using the time-out method in the classroom. The teacher will inform the parent or guardian of the student who has been placed in time-out at the end of the class. If this method is not successful, the child s parent or guardian will be contacted and asked to accompany their child until appropriate behavior is demonstrated. 8

9 SAFETY PROCEDURES AND EQUIPMENT Emergency Evacuation Plan Classroom teachers will lead their students to the lower church parking lot (adjacent to Main Street) should there be any emergency requiring the church to be evacuated. The following is a list of the suggested evacuation procedure for each classroom. However, all parents along with their children should familiarize themselves with all exits on each floor of the church. Infants and Toddlers - Exit through the main door and proceed down the stairs. At the bottom of the stairs turn left and proceed out the door. Three and Four Year Olds - Exit out the back door in their classroom that goes directly outside of the church building. Pre Kindergarten - Exit out the back door in their classroom that goes directly outside of the church building. Kindergarten, First and Second Graders - Exit up the back stairs of their classroom into the church santuary and then preceed out the Grant Street Vestibule. Third, Fourth and Fifth Graders - Exit out the door to their classroom that leads to the downstairs Main Street entrance of the church and proceed out of the church. (Alternative exit: Go across the hall to the the Pre Kindergarten/ Kindergarten classroom and exit out of this classroom s back door that goes directly outside of the church building) Sixth through Twelfth Grade Classrooms - Exit through the stairwell at the back of the Fellowship Hall and proceed out of the church building though the door at the bottom of this stairwell. Men s Group Home Class - Exit out of the chapel door that goes directly outside of the church building. 9

Vacation Bible School - A one week program offered during the summer for preschoolers and elementary age children, with 7th through 12th grade students helping. Little Chimers - Chimers for ages Preschool and Second Grade. Hymn Dingers - Hand Bell Choir for grades 3 thru 12. More information on the above programs is available in the church office. 10

16 Classroom Memorization Goals Junior and Senior High (9-12 Grades) Liturgical Calendar Advent: Christmastide: A four week period in which the church joyfully re members the coming of Christ and eagerly looks forward to His coming again. Beginning with the Sunday nearest November 30, the season is observed for the four Sundays prior to Christmas. Color Purple, the color of royalty The festival of the birth of Jesus. A twelve day period from December 25th to January 5th. Color White Epiphany: Lent: Holy Week: Eastertide: 16 The season marking the revelation of God s gift to all people. Beginning with the day of Epiphany (the day we celebrate the wise men visiting Jesus), January 6th, includes the Baptism of Jesus and continues until Ash Wednesday. Color White The season of 40 weekdays and 6 Sundays, beginning on Ash Wednesday and concluding with Easter. It signifies Christ s wanderings and trials in the wilderness. It is a time of prayer, meditation, fasting and repentance. Color Purple Part of Lent, the week prior to Easter, during which the church remembers the passion and death of Jesus. Holy Week begins with Palm Sunday and includes Maundy Thursday (first Lord s Supper) and Good Friday (day of Jesus death). A 50 day period of 7 Sundays, beginning with Easter, the festival of Christ s resurrection. Ascension Day is observed 40 days after Easter. This season ends with Pentecost. Color White

17 Pentecost: The season remembering the gift of the Holy Spirit to the Church. This long season extends from Pentecost (50 days or the 7th Sunday after Easter) to the beginning of Advent.
