SACRED HEART PARISH RELIGIOUS EDUCATION HANDBOOK 1

Sacred Heart Church Dear Parishioners On the celebration of the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, on June 19, 2009 a day traditionally devoted to prayer for the sanctification of the clergy, Pope Benedict XVI inaugurated a year for priests. This celebration is in remembrance of the 150 th anniversary of the birthday of Saint John Mary Vianney the patron saint of parish priests. I invite all of you to pray for all the priest of the world, and in a special manner for the priest of our diocese. This catechetical year I want to point out to you, parents, grandparents, or guardians, commissioned catechist, volunteers, and leaders of adult education that the folks in our religious education program are hungry not for food that perishes but food that endures for eternal life. (Jn 6:27.) This food is found in the Bible, the Word of God in human words. So, this Catechetical year is a great opportunity for all our families to take their Bibles out of the bookcase and grow in their appreciation for the presence of the Word of God among us. I invite all of you to embark on your ministry as catechist with these words in mind; the word is near you, on your lips and in your heart, that is, the word of faith which we preach; because, if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved (Rom. 10:8-9.) Laudetur Jesus Christus! Fr. Jose L. Millan 2

The Word of God is living and effective (Heb 4:12) Dear People of Sacred Heart Parish, This year s theme, Catechesis and the Proclamation of the Word, recognizes the role catechists play in passing on the faith. The Bible is available to help families appreciate the role of the Scriptures in the Church and especially the liturgy. The Bible is the Church s book, the family album of the community of faith. Through catechesis, children and adults alike come to realize that God s Word is within their reach. We can encounter the Living Christ through Scripture and Tradition, Liturgy and Sacraments, and through one another. This booklet is an effort to inform all parishioners of the formal religious education programs offered in our parish. It is to assist both current families and newcomers to become acquainted with the internal working of each program. My hope is that this will aid families and individuals to participate fully in the religious education program. In order to perform my ministry well, I need support all year long. I ask for your blessings on all catechetical efforts. May your year be filled with the wisdom and grace of God s Word. Yours in Christ, Theresa Paul Director of Religious Education Loving God, Let your peace settle within the hearts of these mothers, fathers, and guardians. Give them strength and wisdom as they care for their children. Show them how to raise their families with patience and tenderness. Give them strength during the times of greatest difficulty and help them recognize the little joys that are part of each day. May they grow in wisdom, understanding, and grace. May they be faithful witnesses to the Word of God who created us, who redeemed us, who calls us, who loves us, who nourishes us, and who guides us on every step of our life s journey. Amen 3

Curriculum and Scope and Sequence Early Childhood: 3 yrs (by 8/31/09) to Pre-Kindergarten Helping children to develop positive attitudes about themselves, their family, and friends by discovering and learning more about the many gifts, talents, and abilities that God has provided. Elementary - grades K - 8 Textbook: Call to Faith from Harcourt Religion Publishers In a community-building focus, the young people will focus on: Kindergarten God is our loving parent who made every person special, and watches over us and all creation. First grade God is our creator who loves us. Jesus is the Son of God who tells us about God. The Holy Spirit helps us to be holy. The Church is the special community of Jesus followers. Sacraments are signs that celebrate our belief in Jesus. We are responsible to love and care for all of God s creation. Second grade Our new life in Christ comes to birth in Christian Initiation; it is strengthened or confirmed through the anointing with the Holy Spirit by which we are more perfectly bonded to the Church. Third grade Eucharist is the summit and culmination of the initiation process. Jesus continues his life and work through the Church as a community of Christian believers. The Church is composed of people who share the same faith and Sacraments and are united in the Holy Spirit under the leadership of the Pope and bishops. Fourth grade Christians are called to live as Jesus did by choosing a life of love characterized by obedience to God and service to others. We learn best how to do this by following the teachings of the Church and the foundations of Christian morality presented in the Old and New Testaments. Through the Sacrament of Penance, Jesus heals us. Fifth grade The Church celebrates the life-giving signs of Christ s saving action in our lives through the sacraments. We grow in our awareness, understanding and identity as Christians by participating in sacramental and other liturgical celebrations. Sixth grade God s saving actions are found throughout history. Written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, the Bible records God s plan of salvation for all people. The revelation of God in the history of the people of Israel, presented in the Old Testament, is fulfilled in Jesus and the Church and presented in the New Testament. Seventh/Eighth grade By his preaching, his death and resurrection, Jesus is both the revealer and the revelation of God. Jesus is both God s approach to humankind and our path to God. The Church is the Sacrament, the primary visible instrument, through which the Spirit is bringing about the total oneness that lies in store for us all. 5

Sacraments Baptism The Sacraments of Initiation--Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist--make us members of the Catholic Church. It is through Baptism, the first sacrament, that our entrance into the Paschal mystery is made most clear. Preparation is required for parents bringing their first child for Baptism. Godparents should also prepare, either at their home parish or here at Sacred Heart. Please contact Fr. Jose one month in advance. Confirmation Each person has a very personal and unique relationship with God. The Holy Spirit speaks within the context of this personal relationship. As our faith continues to deepen, we understand and see things from new perspectives. We feel even more connected to God and to his plan for us and for the world. Our diocese has restored the Sacraments of Initiation to their original order. Confirmation is prepared and celebrated as a large group in the 2 nd grade. The preparation sessions will be for both the parent and the child. First Eucharist The celebration of First Communion marks the beginning of the initiate s full participation in Christian life. Participation in the Sunday celebration of the Eucharist is a sign of our Catholic faith. Eucharist is prepared and celebrated as a large group in the 3 rd grade. Because the order of sacraments have been restored, the sacrament of Confirmation occurs at the same time or prior to receiving Eucharist. First Reconciliation Reconciliation is a beautiful way in which we celebrate God s forgiving love for each of us and our reconciliation with our community of faith. We may (and do!) sin yet God always welcomes us back wholeheartedly. Reconciliation preparation sessions are for both the parent and the child who has reached the age of reason (commonly 2nd 4th grades). Preparation for the Sacrament begins in the Fall. 7

RCIC (Rite of Christian Initiation of Children) Children desiring to enter fully into the church (Baptism or Profession of Faith) who are ages 7-18 will go through the RCIC process. Preparation is on an individual or small group basis. Contact the Religious Education Office to enroll or for more information. RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) Introduction RCIA is the process by which adults are brought into full communion with the Church. It is for those who have never been baptized, those who have been baptized in another denomination and those who have been baptized in the Catholic Church, but have not been confirmed. However, it is not limited to these three groups of people. Also, welcome are those who are coming back to the Church and feel the need to reacquaint themselves with the Church and those who are interested in simply learning more about the Catholic Church. Classes are held from mid-september until the week after Easter, and follow the university calendar. We meet in the Holy Family Room at 7:00 PM on Wednesdays. We also meet at Mass on one Sunday in Advent and several times during Lent. Philosophy of RCIA While it has become a rather trite image, the image of journey still applies to the RCIA in a very strong way. The baptism of infants is often seen as the beginning of a journey. By the time adults come to the RCIA, they have a story and can see that they have been moving towards a relationship with God in their lives. With its four periods and three steps or Rites, the RCIA is also a journey. The second strong theme in the RCIA is that of community. As members of the Body of Christ, we are responsible for handing on and nourishing the faith received from the apostles. Those going through the RCIA process are joining a community. This is why the Rites take place during the community celebrations at Sunday Mass. Registration procedures Formal registration will take place at the first class. However, it would be appreciated if anyone who is planning on attending would call the Religious Education Office ( ) and leave your name and number. 8

Sponsor guidelines and requirements Each person going through the RCIA in order to receive any of the Sacraments of Initiation needs a sponsor. Sponsors should be practicing, confirmed Catholics. The sponsors may or may not be the godparents. Sponsors need to reside locally, so that they can attend the classes and the Rites, invite their catechumen, candidate or confirmandi to Church functions and services and attend with them and be available for just talking or discussing issues. Adult Confirmation Statement on theology of Confirmation Confirmation is the act of signing, or anointing, us with the gift of the Holy Spirit. "By signing us with the gift of the Spirit, confirmation makes us more completely the image of the Lord and fills us with the Holy Spirit, so that we may bear witness to him before all the world and work to bring the Body of Christ to its fullness as soon as possible." (R.C.I.A. Christian Initiation, General Introduction No. 2). Other Adult Education We all need moments of renewal and refreshment. We come to recognize God s presence and our share in the mission of Jesus more fully as we grow in faith, hope and love. The journey of faith is lifelong. Recognizing the centrality of adult faith as a model and foundation for the faith of the entire community, the United States bishops have recently published a statement, Our Hearts Were Burning Within Us, that give new urgency to the ministry of adult faith formation. Opportunities include: Women s Bible Study-(SHARE)-Wednesday s noon Bible Study groups are formed as interest is expressed Advent Retreat December 5, 2009 Watch bulletin for details. 17 PARENTS PRAYER Most loving Father, the example of parenthood, you have entrusted my children to me to bring them up for you and prepare them for everlasting life. Assist me with your grace, that I may fulfill this sacred duty with competence and love. Teach me what to give and what to withhold. Show me when to reprove, when to praise and when to be silent. Make me gentle and considerate, yet firm and watchful. Keep me from the weakness of indulgence and the excess of severity. Give me the courage to be disliked sometimes by my children, when I must do necessary things which are displeasing in their eyes. Give me the imagination to enter their world in order to understand and guide them. Grant me all the virtues I need to lead them by word and example in the ways of wisdom and piety. One, with them, may I enter into the joys of our true and lasting home with you in heaven. Amen. 17

10 THINGS CHILDREN SHOULD KNOW ABOUT PRAYER by Susan Taylor Brown 1. Prayer is communication It can be spoken or silent. It can be a song or a story. It can be a picture or a dance. 2. Prayer can be done as often as you like. Every week. Every day. Every hour. 3. Prayer can be done however you want. There s no right or wrong way to pray. 4. Prayer can be shared, but doesn t have to be. It can be done alone or with a favorite toy. It can be done with friends, family or pets. 5. Prayer can be done anywhere. It can be done in your room or at the kitchen table. It can be done out in your yard, at the park or even at the zoo. 6. Prayer can be done in any mood. You can be happy, sad, angry, scared or confused when you pray. 7. Prayer can be for yourself or someone else. If you know someone who could use a little help--add them to your prayers. 8. Prayer doesn t need a certain structure, length or specific words. Whatever words you use, long or short, however your prayer comes out is fine. 9. Prayer doesn t need a special occasion. There are certain prayers appropriate to special occasions but you don t need to wait for a special time to pray 10. Prayer doesn t have to be a request. It can also be used to give thanks for what you have already received. Thank you, is a perfect prayer. 18

SECOND AND THIRD GRADE The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen Hail Mary Hail, Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you! Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen. Prayer to the Holy Spirit Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful, and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created, and you will renew the face of the earth. Lord, by the light of the Holy Spirit you have taught the hearts of your faithful. In the same Spirit help us choose what is right and always rejoice in your consolation. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen Responses to Mass Prayers Children s Mass books are located in the pews. 20

Act of Contrition FOURTH THROUGH SIXTH GRADE My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned against you whom I should love above all things. I firmly intend, with your help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin. Our Savior Jesus Christ suffered and died for us. In his name, my God, have mercy. The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, one in Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he was born of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake, he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered, died, and was buried. On the third day he rose again in fulfillment of the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, Who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. 21

Hail Holy Queen SEVENTH AND EIGHTH GRADE THE SALVE REGINA (Hail Holy Queen): Hail Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life our sweetness and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve; To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us and after this our exile show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary! Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Confiteor I confess to almighty God, and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have sinned through my own fault in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done, and in what I have failed to do; and I ask blessed Mary, ever virgin, all the angels and saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God. The Ten Commandments (Book of Deuteronomy 5:6-21) 1. I am the Lord, your God: you shall not have strange gods before me. 2. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain. 3.
