2 What Are You Doing for Lent? The Church teaches us to do penance during Lent. This means to do something good to make up for our sins. It means to make sacrifices. A sacrifice is an offering to God given with love. Many people give up something as a sacrifice during Lent. That s fine if what you give up is something that gets in the way of your friendship with Jesus. But if you give up candy and keep on being mean to your brother, what good does that do? It would be better to give up being mean to your brother! Lent is a time to do something that will help you grow closer to God and will help the life of Christ to grow in you. You might pray more, be more helpful to others, or do your chores without complaining. You get the idea. Totally Lent! will help you keep track of your spiritual growth throughout the next six weeks. On pages 32 and 33, there is a drawing of a sunflower. This sunflower will be your growth chart. Every Saturday you can write a note about how you ve done in keeping your promise for Lent. Take some time now to think about what you will do this Lent. Write your promise for Lent in the space on page 32. 3

3 33 First Thursday of Lent February 26 Today s Gospel: Matthew 7:7-12 Jesus said, Do to others as you would have them do to you. (7:12) The answer to each of these clues is a number from Each number stands for a letter. 4 28 Second Wednesday of Lent March 4 Today s Gospel: Matthew 20:17-28 On the way to Jerusalem, Jesus took his apostles aside and told them exactly what was going to happen to him when they got there. The Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn him to death; then they will hand him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified; and on the third day he will be raised. (20:18-19) The apostles were clueless. They practically ignored what Jesus said about his suffering and rising. Instead, they argued about who would sit closest to him when he came into his kingdom! Now imagine the text Jesus might send to share the message of this Gospel with you. Decode his text so you won t be clueless. Watch out! This can be tricky. Most numbers stand for multiple letters. To help you, some of the letters have been filled in. 5 6 Monday of Holy Week March 30 Today s Gospel: John 12:1-11 Jesus had just finished eating a meal at the home of his friends, Mary, Martha, and Lazarus. Mary brought in a pound of expensive perfume and gently rubbed it onto Jesus feet. The spicy fragrance filled the whole house. The perfume was worth at least 300 silver pieces! (12:1-5) Mary held nothing back out of love for Jesus. Soon Jesus will give his life on the cross. He will hold nothing back out of love for you. Because of her love for Jesus, Mary held nothing back. Soon Jesus would give his life on the cross. Because of his love for all people, he would hold nothing back. Answer each of these questions honestly. During Mass, do you join in and sing out, or do you hold back? When someone uses Jesus name irreverently, do you ignore it, or do you ask the person not to speak that way? If someone is sick or hurting, do you ask what you can do to help and follow through on your offer, or do you just say, Good luck? 52 Lord Jesus, when I see the chance to show my love for you, help me to go for it.
