Background, Churches and Benefice The two parishes have shared a Vicar since 2000 when the half time vicar of St Paul s retired. The vicar of St Nicholas (affectionately known as St Nicks) accepted responsibility for St Paul s and Quarndon s vicarage became the home of a diocesan advisor and Cathedral Canon. Churches within the Allestree area, including St Paul s and St Nicks, are linked through Allestree Churches Together (ACT) and the events arranged by its standing committee. The other churches are: two Anglican, two Methodist, Baptist, Roman Catholic and Independent Evangelical. St Nicks, Allestree, and St Paul s, Quarndon, voted to become part of the Derby City Deanery. This formed part of a diocesan plan to reduce the number of deaneries and make them a focus for training, mission and mutual support. There are 32 churches in the new deanery. The new Area Dean lives in Quarndon vicarage. Location The church of St Nicholas Allestree is situated two miles north of Derby city centre, with a modern building and nearby Vicarage. St Paul s Quarndon, a 19th century church in a village setting, is a mile and a half further north. Both churches are within pleasant surroundings, with nearby amenities including shops and good schools. Both also are within walking distance of parks and countryside and within easy reach of the Peak District National Park. Kedleston Hall and gardens, currently managed by the National Trust, are located nearby. Nottingham is only 16 miles away and Birmingham 41 miles. Both can be easily reached by road or public transport. There is easy access to the M1 motorway via the A38 and A52 trunk roads. Population The population of St Nicks, Allestree, is about 5,800 and ethnicity is predominantly white British. There is a high number of older middle age and retirement households. It is an affluent area, with high employment and professional occupations. The population of St Paul s is about 2,000 and is distributed more or less equally between an area of Allestree which adjoins St Nicks parish and the civil parish of Quarndon, which is outside Derby City. The statistical profile of Quarndon is similar to that of Allestree but property is more expensive and highly sought after. The age range is skewed to the group, in line with a high level of managerial and professional occupations. Overall there are fewer young people than average, but the number of 0-14 year olds is closer to the average, reflecting the availability of good schools in the area. There is likely to be a development of anything from 200 to 400 new houses on land of which half lies in each parish. 3

Secondary Education Allestree Woodlands School is an Academy with about 1,240 pupils. In 2014 Ofsted graded the school as Good, saying, Students are making good and sometimes outstanding progress and reach standards that are well above national averages. Sixth Form students are very well prepared for higher education or employment. Woodlands has a swimming pool, a drama and performance area and extensive sports facilities that may be used by the local communities. Other schools attended by Allestree and Quarndon children are: Ecclesbourne, three miles away in Duffield; Landau Forte College in the city; and St Benedict s Roman Catholic Academy. Schools Primary Education There are four excellent primary schools in the area: Portway Infant, Portway Junior (2013: both Good ), Lawn Primary (2016: Outstanding ) and Curzon CofE Aided School in Quarndon (2015: Good, with strong Christian ethos and leadership ). The Allestree schools have about 900 pupils on roll and the Curzon School has 129. According to the National Society Inspector in 2015, Curzon has distinctively Christian values deeply embedded in every aspect of the life of the school. All these schools have a considerably higher percentage achieving SATS Level 4 and above in English and Mathematics when compared to the Derby average. There are opportunities in all Allestree and Quarndon schools for Christian ministry. There is a faith chaplaincy at Woodlands and the incumbent will be invited into all schools to lead assemblies, potentially every week at Curzon. In addition there are Christian clubs in three of the primary schools and three Open the Book teams, all with participation from St Nicks and St Paul s. For I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future Jeremiah 29:11 4

Shopping Allestree has multiple branded supermarkets, a small shopping centre; a health centre, doctor and dental practices, opticians, and solicitor firms to name but a few. St Paul s in its Quarndon village setting has a cricket club, a pub with a good reputation, and a church hall used extensively by many local groups including amateur dramatics, keep fit and groups for the elderly. There are two main pubs, one in the village and one on Kedleston Road, and various takeaway food premises. Derby has a vibrant feel to it with a wide variety of both large retail chain outlets and independent stores predominantly located in INTU and The Cathedral Quarter Links Other services locally There are two GP practices, two pharmacies, two dental practices, and two optometrists, all within a mile of St Nicks. The Royal Derby Hospital has an excellent reputation and is 3.7 miles away. There are no Care Homes in Allestree or Quarndon but there is some sheltered housing. Diocese of Derby: Derby City Council: Amber Valley Council: Quarndon Parish Council: There is a regular bus service around Allestree and along Kedleston Road into the city centre and there are regular railway services from Derby to destinations throughout the country. East Midlands and Birmingham International Airports are within easy reach. 5

We consider ourselves to be a gently charismatic evangelical church, with a relaxed and simple style of worship. We have a loving and faithful church family. We have 100 people on the electoral roll of which approximately 20 live outside the parish. We are actively developing and growing our children's work, with groups on three Sunday mornings and family worship on the other. As a church family we encourage holidays at both Spring Harvest and New Wine. We belong to the New Wine network and endorse their vision statement and values. We support our Non Stipendiary Vicar financially to attend the summer conferences and to refresh our library with New Wine resources. Some of us have been involved in the Prayer Ministry team and craft workshops and we have also regularly attended other New Wine events. We are therefore firmly committed to New Wine values and we expect prospective candidates to hold the same values. Our youth group, which started small and is now growing, meets in the Hall on the alternate Sunday evenings to FOG (Focus on God). We are fortunate to have a very dedicated Non-stipendiary Associate Vicar and a Reader who take active leadership roles in church life. We have a children and family worker, shared with St Paul s, who we employ for 30hrs/week - currently on maternity leave. This role is being covered by 2 x 10 hour paid workers. Funding is secured to maintain this role until Music We have a well-established music group who lead sung worship on Sunday mornings and for FOG services, except for the fourth Sunday of the month, when the organ leads a more traditional communion service. The music group actively encourages new and young musicians/singers to join them whenever possible. Sing joyfully to the Lord Psalm 33:1 7

All Age - a shorter contemporary service with children's activities. An informal Holy Communion service. Morning Praise. Holy Communion (with organ on the fourth Sunday of the month). 7pm Evening Worship, FOG - A fortnightly service of informal and modern worship with personal space and a choice of prayer zones followed by coffee and cake! Songs and information are conveyed using easy worship software projected on to a screen, with a comprehensive PA system for sound. We hold several carol services for the local schools and these are well attended with an average of 140. The Nativity service on Christmas Eve is usually a full house of 260 family members. We are blessed with many volunteers who; read, lead intercessions, form a prayer team, act as welcomers for services, arrange flowers, clean the church, maintain the buildings, organise refreshments for services. 8

Prayer Ministry This ministry is available during and after services. We have a team in this role that respects both the confidentiality and the privilege of such prayer. We have also held healing services and this is an area we would like to develop and grow in. Pastoral Care Pastoral care is very informal and can be patchy. We have looked at our shortcomings in this and have started a dedicated prayer group and discussions on how to improve. We have people willing to take a part in a team dedicated to this. There has been little follow up after a baptism or bereavement and this is possibly an area for future development. Adult Groups There are currently five home groups meeting either weekly or fortnightly, one including some people who now worship elsewhere. We do not currently have a home group coordinator, something we hope to address soon. Home groups are very important to us as they provide not only the opportunity for a greater depth of study but also support and friendship in a loving and confidential setting. One group now runs coffee and chat for older people and another has recently sponsored an Alpha course. Other groups at St Nicks include; a monthly prayer meeting. Knit and Natter the group meets twice a month. They natter as they knit garments for charity and enjoy each other s fellowship. Women s Fellowship - a non-denominational group who meet monthly for social and supportive fellowship and enjoy listening to a variety of invited speakers. Pub Lunch a group of people go out for lunch together once a month after the Sunday service. Men s Group relatively new, last organised trip was to a Free Church event in Burton on Trent. Charity Social Events - a team puts on a social event to raise money for a named charity and to have fun in the process. Alpha courses 9

Groups for Younger People Playtime is held each week in school time in our hall with coffee and homemade cake for about 20 adults, snacks for the little ones, toys, singing and time for conversation and support. It s a wonderful space for me and my little ones. We have made a prayerful and financial commitment to families and children in our community, employing a full time children and family worker. Our children and family worker is active in local schools taking assemblies and coordinating Christian based activities. We are currently planning to embark upon running a Who let the Dads Out group for Saturday mornings. We run a fortnightly Youth group with very active leadership. We have been orienteering, snow tubing, have fish and chip suppers etc. Lily (11) I like going to Youth because each time we meet up we do something fun. Most months we run a Messy Church where attendance can be as many as 70, with 90% of attendees being nonchurch goers. I enjoy Messy Church (Lillie Grace). St Nicks, in partnership with St Paul s, organise and run holiday clubs, these have been extremely popular and are well attended. They are during each main school holiday, and are held in St Nicks Church buildings. Ben (7) and Maisie (14) both liked people getting custard pies in their faces. Molly (16) told us that at St Nicks in a big group of children of different ages and going to different schools everyone seems to get on really well. Olivia and Jack sum us up with " I like the biscuits" and " It s the only Church where you can play hockey afterwards. Administration We have 15 members on the PCC, including our Chairperson. We currently meet in the Chapel every other month. During our current vacancy we have formed a Standing Committee, which consists of our Chairperson, Church Wardens, Treasurer, our Non-stipendiary Associate Vicar and Reader. We meet bi-monthly alternating with PCC meetings. We have a paid administrator who works 18 hours a week. We have two members of the church who are responsible for health and safety and building maintenance. They ensure that routine maintenance and any work identified on the quinquennial report is completed. We currently employ contract cleaners for all spaces other than the main church area, which is cleaned by volunteers. Our volunteers cut the church lawns. 10

During 2015 we conducted a healthy church survey of members to identify areas on which to focus attention. The results were wide ranging for many questions, showing differences of opinion. Following a review by the PCC the new Mission Action Plan (MAP), as included below, was adopted by the Church. Where we are going (our vision) We aim to be Spirit filled people who: know and worship God experience spiritual growth and renewal live out the Word of God in every aspect of life are becoming a praying and caring community make Christ s unconditional love more widely known The way forward (the main features of our plan) growing in discipleship listening to the Holy Spirit and responding in faith deepening our relationship with God through scripture, prayer and worship learning to do what Jesus did in the power of the Spirit building confidence in God's power to transform lives Engaging in mission forming relationships within the wider community, respecting people for who they are and listening to their needs and questions developing accessible events, space and services, including for prayer and healing supporting Christian work with local children and teenagers in church and schools encouraging intentional, gentle evangelism We identified three key areas for our MAP: Growing in discipleship through worship, prayer and learning, plus increasing confidence in God s power to change lives Engaging in mission, particularly in connecting more with the community, developing accessible events and services, developing children and youth work and encouraging intentional evangelism Updating facilities where funds allow, including replacing pews with chairs Further afield; We actively support, the Toy Box Appeal, Christian Aid, MAF and Padley and Homeless in Derby, Mission to Seafarers, Nagpur, Tearfund and New Wine. We have strong representation with the Children s Society. We have run regular Alpha Courses for the past ten years. We have a link person to the local scout group associated with St Nicks. We know there are many elderly home bound people in our community and would like to do more to help. We are beginning in prayer and thoughts about what action to take. We are mindful that there is more we could do in ministry and mission to those around us. We are praying for the Holy Spirit to fill us and for our new vicar to help us to discern God's will. 11

We are a broad based church with a mix of worship traditions, ranging from traditional Communion services (Common Worship) to more informal All Age services. There are currently 57 people on the electoral roll. We encourage lay participation in all services, so members of the congregation read lessons, lead intercessions, administer the chalice and take part in drama, puppets, etc. There is a strong sense of fellowship in the church community and we consider our people to be our greatest asset. We are especially pleased that visitors to our church comment on the warmth of the welcome they receive. Our Fellowship and Services Sunday services are usually at 10am and currently we have two Communion services, one All Age Worship and one Morning Praise each month. The best attended service is All Age, with an average congregation of 42 adults and 16 children. Other services have an average attendance of 33 adults and 1 child. All Age services are planned and often led by a small but dedicated team of lay people, including puppeteers. In recent years we have been especially encouraged by the growth in attendance of younger families with children, many of them relatively unchurched. Special services are held several times a year, including Education Sunday, Mothering Sunday, Harvest, Christingle and Christmas and these attract much larger congregations. Traditional services are accompanied by the organ and small choir. A band of musicians plays for the All Age services I really like the HOW puppets because they re funny and I also like it when people act things out. -Isabel Baptism Most parents tend not to be churchgoers and opt for a later private service rather than a baptism in a main Sunday service. At St Paul s, where there has been a private baptism, the family are invited to the following All Age service so that the child can be welcomed into the church family. They are also given an invitation to the Edward Bear meetings. We have found that this contact often enables us to start building a relationship with the family 12 Occasional Offices Average no per year Baptisms 5 Weddings 3 Funerals 5 (church) 4 (crem)

Church Groups Home Group The St Paul s Homegroup meets fortnightly in members homes. It currently has ten members, mostly from St Paul s, and is led by a lay member. Strong relationships have grown through studying God s Word together with a regular commitment to prayer. Prayer Group A prayer meeting is held in the church on the 4th Sunday of the month after the morning service. HOW Puppets St Paul s is home to the HOW (Handful Of Worship) puppet team and has several young people in the team. Edward Bear Edward Bear is a group for pre-school children and their carers who meet in the church on Thursday afternoons in term time for a Bible story, craft, play and refreshments. Although numbers are small, this group provides a vital opportunity for the church to make contact with young families and also promotes good relationships. Many of the new families attending our All Age services have been introduced to the church through Edward Bear. Administration We have ten members on the PCC. We also have a Standing Committee comprising the Chair of the PCC, the two churchwardens and the treasurer. We share an administrator with St Nicks and contribute to the cost of employing her. We have plans to develop this relationship further to assist with more tasks at St Paul s. A monthly notice sheet for the congregation is produced by a volunteer and a bi-monthly newsletter is distributed to every home in the parish. We also use social media to keep people informed of events and to spread news items. 13

Mission and Ministry To children and families We share the children and family worker with St Nicks and contribute to the cost of employing her. The HOW Puppet team regularly takes part in All Age Services but also visits several primary schools in the area to lead Collective Worship. They take an assembly in church for the Curzon School once a term. An Open the Book team, comprising three members of St Paul s congregation, presents a Bible story in church to the Curzon School most weeks. The Children s Worker takes assemblies and leads a Christian club in the school and members of the congregation are or have been governors at the school. The Curzon School and Quarndon Pre-school are invited to various events organised by St Paul s such as Experience Easter, Experience Pentecost, Experience Harvest and the Week of Prayer. St Paul s also hosts special services for the Curzon School. Messy Church takes place on Sunday afternoons 9 times a year for 2 hours from 4.00pm in the Church Hall. Attendance varies from 20 to nearly 60. Messy church is organised by a lay team, and very much enjoyed by those attending. A number of families attending have no other contact with church. Pastoral Care Our congregation is friendly and welcoming, and values good personal relationships. Pastoral care is mostly covered by members of the congregation on an informal basis, with reasonable communication regarding individuals in particular need at times, though an improved structure of care would be beneficial. In recent years monthly mini outings have been arranged, with transport for those requiring it. These are greatly enjoyed, especially by older members. Messy church helps us learn about Jesus s adventures and lessons. It s lots of fun doing crafts and stories. 14

Wider Ministry St Paul s has a small, committed team of helpers who are keen to promote the work of the church and liaise with the local community. As well as special events in the church (Experience Easter, etc) we have also, in recent years, held two Christmas Tree Festivals, two Spring/ Summer Fairs, a Week of Prayer and a Celebration of the Queen s 90th Birthday, including a Church Service, picnic and games/ entertainment at the Cricket Club Members of the congregation support local food banks and this has recently become a focus of our harvest celebrations St Paul s supports work in Tanzania via Missionary families and in Nagpur, India in association with the local churches Nagpur Link. The Curzon School has a link with the Good Samaritan school in Uganda and St Paul s people support fund-raising events and information sharing. The PCC tithes one tenth of its regular income to charities at home and abroad. Further information on mission giving is detailed in our finances (available on request). 15

Stage 1: Where we are starting from (summary of our present situation) All Age services and Messy Church are flourishing and Sunday attendance has increased in the last couple of years. There is a long-standing relationship with the church aided school, which was recently described as having distinctively Christian values deeply embedded in every aspect of the life of the school, National Society Inspector (2015). The overall condition of the church building is good and patently well cared for, church architect (2015). The church hall is also in good condition and is well used. The number of older members has pastoral implications. The congregation is generally friendly and inclusive. There is a committed core group leading mission initiatives but potential younger helpers are not yet sufficiently embedded in the congregation. Stage 2: Where are we going - description of our destination in three years The whole church growing in their discipleship and relationship with God. A caring and praying community. An increased core group of members that are engaged and involved in the life of the church and the community it serves. An effective partnership between the church and the school. A positive impact and Christian witness within the local community. Stage 3: What s the best way to get there? - features of our 3 year Mission Action Plan Continue to provide good quality services with teaching, worship and prayer. Encourage supportive small groups in the life of the church. Involve fringe members more in church activities and all age worship. Talk to the school staff and foundation governors about how the church can better support and link with them. Hold an enquirers course focused on faith questions. Continue to engage the community e.g. building relationships, mini-outings and summer fair etc Stage 4: What do we need to do? - principal actions for the next 12 months Create a prayer corner within the church. Use the church notice sheet to better publicise the teaching programme. Involve children in leading all age worship e.g. in singing and playing music upfront Start an afternoon small group bible study, or an evening parenting course. Speak to the school about supporting the summer Uganda visit Hold at least one major community event during the year 16

Challenges and Opportunities for the future St Nicks and St Paul s have generally operated as two separate communities who happen to share the same vicar. We are two individual parishes but would like to become one team for God. We hope that our new incumbent will bring vision, energy and enthusiasm to encourage this. We are looking forward to fulfilling our opportunities and addressing our challenges together. From St Paul s perspective, people attending our services and activities cover a wide spectrum, from families with babies and children attending Edward Bear, Messy Church and All Age services, to a spread of ages attending more traditional worship and communion services. The age range of the parish is skewed to the age range, but this age group is not well represented and the challenge is how to bring God s word to this group, as well as helping some of the younger, less churched families grow in faith. We have a good relationship with children from the Curzon School, but little contact with their parents and we recognise this as an area for development. We are also aware of the need to move forward in our prayer lives and ministry. Then Jesus came to them and said, All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. Matthew 28:

St Nicks Originally a daughter church of St Edmund s, Allestree, St Nicks was consecrated in The premises comprise an unlisted church that seats 250, a hall with stage and sprung maple floor, licensed for 220, a well equipped kitchen, a comfortable office with computer and copying equipment, three meeting rooms, and toilets at the back of both church and hall. The buildings have been renovated in recent years and are hired out for regular and occasional events. Attached to the back of the hall is a two storey building for a church affiliated scout group. Lawns surround the church, there is an adequate car park (for around 30 cars) and good on-street parking. The 2016 quinquennial inspection showed no major problems and the architect commented, The church is generally in very good order reflecting the hard work of church members. The PCC believes that the buildings are looking a little tired in a few places and intends to create a more flexible space within the church by replacing pews with chairs. There is no churchyard but a small memorial garden for cremated remains. 18

St Paul s Built in 1874, St Paul s is a Grade II listed building situated in a prominent position in the village with the Curzon school on one side and church hall on the other. It has seating for 200, a disabled toilet, a useful stage area at the front and (as the result of a recent re-ordering) space at the back for refreshments and other activities. There is a good amplification system with induction loop and a data projector and screen are used in some services. At the turn of the millennium, substantial funds for repair of the spire (in excess of 25k) were raised through generous donations from parishioners, many of whom were not churchgoers. In her 2015 Quinquennial report the architect said, the overall condition of the church is good and patently well cared for, though there is work to do and an Appeal is in place to raise funds for this and, hopefully, to allow the church to be re-decorated. The Appeal so far is going well with significant funds being generated. There is a small building group, which recommends and manages work authorised by the PCC. A system of priorities, based on the Quinquennial Report, is in place to ensure work is correctly prioritised to protect the future of the Church building. An open churchyard surrounds the church. Although scope for new burials is very limited, the space for cremated remains should last for many years. The maintenance of the churchyard is put out to contract. The Church Hall The village hall was built in 1919 and, having been extended and modernised, through a highly successful appeal, is a popular venue and a key support for socialising in the village. The main hall with stage is licensed for 132 and there is a kitchen, toilets and two meeting rooms, one of which is occupied by Quarndon PreSchool. Car parking is available at the rear of the hall. The PCC is responsible for the Hall. It is currently managed by the Treasurer, and a volunteer booking secretary. It is fully self-financing and negotiations are proceeding to determine whether future excess funds can be used to support work on the church building, and its work in the Parish potentially a very valuable asset to church funds. Unless the Lord builds the house, its builders labour in vain Psalm 127:1 19

The vicarage is adjacent to St Nicks church and a mile and a half (5 minutes drive) from St Paul s. It was built in about 1960 and is generally well designed and in a good state of repair. It is a generously proportioned house with kitchen, sitting room, dining room, study and cloakroom downstairs. There are four good-sized bedrooms (one with washbasin), a family bathroom and separate WC. Much of the roof space is boarded for storage. The house is double glazed throughout and easy to heat. The garden has a boundary of dense hedging or fencing which ensures a good level of privacy. There is a grassed area with flowerbeds to the front elevation. There is an integral brick garage and parking space on the driveway for two cars. There is a plan to carry out refurbishment to the vicarage. The property has been subject to a surveyor s inspection and the Diocesan property team have plans for some alteration and modernisation work. 20

The 2015 accounts for both churches are summarised below. Full copies of these accounts are available on request. The two PCCs between them meet clergy expenses in full. St Nicks pays nearly 30k in salaries and support costs and receives a similar amount from the hire of church rooms. St Paul s finances are slightly more complex because money raised from hiring of the hall is currently restricted and there was 28k in this fund at the end of Both churches tithe 10% of their income to support home and overseas mission. 22 Rooted in Prayer. Serving Derby, Sharing the Gospel St Nicholas, Allestree and St Paul, Quarndon form part of Derby City Deanery. Launched in September 2016, the Deanery is still a fairly new body. It brings together for the first time all of the parishes in the City of Derby, together with a very few (including Quarndon) on the edge of the city. The Deanery comprises 35 parishes, and about people live in the Deanery. There are also chaplaincies at the University of Derby and hospitals in the city, and a Bishop s Mission Order community in the Deanery. The Deanery aims to bring parishes together for mutual support, and to work together in mission. We launched with a Festival of Life, which brought all of the parishes together to engage in outward facing mission activities in one parish in the Deanery. Current plans for working together include the Archbishops Thy Kingdom Come initiative; a pilgrimage to Taizé; and another Festival of Life. We are also actively developing a Deanery Mission Action Plan, which will support mission activity, service and deployment into the future. The Deanery takes an active approach to life in the city. We are supporting Derby City Council s Talking Point initiative, bringing adult social care into the communities of the city. We have supported a parish initiative that offers practical help, such as gardening and D.I.Y., to vulnerable people in the city. We are exploring how to bring our collective energies to bear on the issue of mental health in Derby. The Chapter meets monthly (3 rd Thursday of the month, 2-4pm). A typical chapter meeting involves time spent Dwelling in the Word together; time learning from the church in which we are meeting; time thinking together on a particular area of work/mission; and time in supporting one another through sharing news and enjoying one another s company. The Area Dean is a half time appointment, which enables support for clergy and parishes to be more readily available. We hope that the next minister of St Nicholas and St Paul s will work creatively and collegially with others in the Deanery to further the mission of the church. We look forward to learning from whoever that may be, and to benefitting from their presence amongst the Deanery Chapter. We are praying for a minister that will work with the congregations of the two parishes and with the Deanery to serve Derby and to share the Gospel.
