We are seeking a Priest who will join this creative and vibrant community and will help us engage with the Diocesan priorities of Growing Disciples Wider Younger Deeper. 3 Mission St Mary Magdalene is a single-church Parish offering a full-time stipendiary post. Our mission is one of Worship, Friendship, Education and Community, as is evident from our growing discipleship. St Mary s is alive with worship and fellowship. We are an inclusive, welcoming community, rooted in prayer, worship and scripture embracing the wide breadth of the Anglican tradition. Sited only minutes away from the beautiful Derbyshire Dales and north Nottinghamshire countryside, we have a growing congregation with an electoral roll of 197 and are viewed by the Diocese as a potential Resource Church. There are two large congregations having a regular attendance of approximately 90 people each with a broad age profile. The traditional congregation meets every Sunday, whilst the Worship4All congregation, which includes more than 45 children, meet fortnightly. Although we are a large Parish, you ll find no shortage of willing and experienced volunteer helpers. A recent survey counted more than 54 people giving over 230 volunteer hours per week to the Church and wider community. Our Parish office is staffed part-time by experienced volunteers. Our team of 3 LLM s offer ministry support during services as well as supporting our funeral ministry. Funeral ministry is shared by several licensed ministers. St Mary s has a strong mission in pastoral ministry. Our Food bank, serves food parcels, essential equipment, hot food and drinks to more than 100 people every week. With a turnover of nearly 800 per month, we work closely with organisations such as Citizens Advice, Framework and the Job Centre in order to deliver this essential service every week throughout the entire year. Our ministry teams offer pastoral care and home visits for the disabled and housebound, along with bereavement and funeral counselling, hospital and hospice volunteers, school teaching assistance and many partnerships with community groups. 4 The Deanery The Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham includes the city of Nottingham and many former coalfield and rural communities across the whole of Nottinghamshire and a few parishes in South Yorkshire. There are 314 Anglican church buildings in the 264 parishes served by 178 Clergy, 277 Recognised Lay Ministers and many other committed volunteers. The Deanery of Newstead comprises a mixture of towns and villages of varying sizes in a former coalfield area of the county with a population of 137,500 and growing with new housing developments. There is a pride in its industrial heritage, which has left its imprint on these communities, who have a strong sense of family, cohesion and loyalty to the local community. Much use is made by our population of their local church, especially for the occasional offices, such that some of our mission opportunities and strategies are grounded in Christendom mode. That said, there are a good and growing number of pioneering projects and a focus on church planting and grafting. The new Vicar of the Parish Church of St. Mary Magdalene will be joining us at an important time in the life of the Deanery [where I have very recently been appointed Area Dean]. Over the last eleven years, my personal experience has been of Newstead as a healthy and supportive deanery, committed to the growing disciples wider, younger and deeper lead from our Bishops and to maintaining a strong and vibrant local presence for mission and ministry in all the communities of our Deanery. With reducing clergy numbers we have to think how best we can work together. Colleagues meet regularly at Chapter for support, encouragement and prayer as well as to receive information etc. The deanery works in 4 clusters and the leaders of this one (comprising the other Anglican churches in Sutton, Skegby, Teversal, Stanton Hill and Huthwaite) meet weekly for prayer. Ordained and lay members of Deanery Synod work collaboratively and are excited by what God is doing here. I am more than happy to chat to anyone considering this post. 5 The Parish The parish of St Mary Magdalene has a population of around 25,000 and an Electoral Roll of 197. This is also a realistic reflection of attendance and ministry. It is located in the market town of Sutton-in-Ashfield and is sited only minutes away from the beautiful Derbyshire Dales and north Nottinghamshire countryside. Motorway access is via Junction 28 of the M1, which is only 4 miles away. Nottingham is just 30 minutes drive, and Sheffield and Derby are both 40 minutes. There are excellent rail links to Nottingham and Worksop, and East Midlands airport is just 40 minutes drive. Sutton is a growing town of approximately 43,000 residents administered by Ashfield District Council. It is in the Ashfield Parliamentary Constituency. There are a range of houses in both private and public ownership and a new private estate housing of 3,500 people has recently been built in the parish. Sutton is a thriving market town and the town centre is pedestrianised. It has a covered shopping centre as well as an outdoor and indoor market (which is currently under refurbishment). There is a selection of stores including ASDA, Aldi and Lidl, as well as traditional small shops, banks and building societies. A small retail park is sited just outside the town centre and large retail park, McArthur Glen East Midlands Designer Outlet, is located only a few minutes drive near Junction 28 of the M1. The parish is well served by schools and colleges. In addition to the Church school, there are five other primary schools in the state sector, a secondary school with adult education (Sutton Centre Community Academy), and the Sutton campus of West Nott s College. An independent school, catering for ages 4 to 18, is located near to the church. Within 2 minutes walk of the church is the Lammas Leisure Centre. This features a 25m swimming pool, teaching pool, four court sports hall, ice rink, six lane bowls hall, fitness suite, squash courts and a large car park. Brierley Park is just 10 minutes walk from the church. The park's 100 hectares (250 acres) provides many trails, nature conservation areas, recreation facilities (such as a golf club and a football pitch), art and sculptures, a play trail and areas of local historical interest. The Church School St Mary s Church has strong links with St Mary Magdalene Church Academy School. The school has 210 pupils aged 5 to 11 and they form an integral part of our parish family. Our Worship4All congregation was originally established to support the school s ministry and now boasts a regular attendance of more than 90 adults and children. The school holds an outstanding Ofsted rating and the governing body includes a number of church members. Church members also support the school with voluntary assistance.

6 The Vicarage A modern 4 bedroom detached house adjacent to the churchyard in a small close of executive houses. A large study is accessed from the front entrance alongside the visitors WC. These facilities are independent of the family rooms. The Parish office is sited in the Church centre and is therefore not a part of the vicarage. The family rooms comprise a large living room, dining room, kitchen and utility downstairs. Upstairs are 3 large double bedrooms and an additional single bedroom. There is a separate bathroom and WC. The house is fitted with gas central heating, solar panels, double glazing and an intruder alarm. A single garage is attached to the house with a large driveway which can accommodate at least 3 cars. There is a lawn to the front and a reasonably sized private garden to the rear. The house backs on to the churchyard offering a relaxed and tranquil setting.

7 The Church The present building has its origins in the 12 th century and is listed Grade II*. It stands in a prominent position, within a peaceful churchyard just outside of the town centre. The latest Quinquennial Inspection (2014) noted that the Church is well cared for and in good condition. The church has a full peal of bells and a regular ringing team. The pipe organ is regularly tuned and our long-standing organist is available for services. Audio video facilities are also available in the church. Disabled access is provided and the church is cleaned weekly by volunteer teams of church members. The Church Centre The Magdalene Centre is adjacent to the churchyard and Vicarage. It is managed by a committee reporting to the PCC and offers financial support to the church. The Centre is in very good condition and houses a fully-equipped parish office. The premises consist of an entrance lobby with toilets, a large main hall with stage, a lounge with licensed bar, a catering kitchen, storerooms and the parish office. The main hall is equipped with a state-of-the-art surround sound system and a large projection screen with video facilities. The Centre is available for all church functions and is used mainly by church groups. It is also used by the diocese for away-days and training events, as well as the wider community for dancing and keep-fit classes. It caters for social events including parties, wedding receptions and baptism parties, and offers a full catering service, if required. The licensed bar also opens on Sunday evenings for church members and their guests.
