2 A SERVICE OF RETIREMENT June 9, :30 pm GATHERING MUSIC Broadway UMC Band, Council Bluffs GREETING In your journey with Christ and your calling to ministry, you have come to another crossroad. The opportunities ahead are many, and the needs of the church you have served so faithfully remain. Others will carry that responsibility as you stop for much needed rest. Another path has taken you to the lakeshore. To reflect, plan and seek Christ s guidance for the future, take the step into the future, enjoying retirement, knowing that you are still walking with Christ. HYMN (Please rise in body or in spirit.) INTRODUCTION OF PREACHER Bishop Laurie Haller SCRIPTURE Numbers 8:23-26 The Lord spoke to Moses: This rule applies to the Levites: Everyone 25 years old and above will enter into service, performing the duties for the meeting tent. At 50 years old each will retire from service. They will perform their duties no longer. Each may assist his fellow Levites in the meeting tent with some responsibilities, but he may not perform service. This is how you should assign responsibilities to the Levites. John 9:1-7 As Jesus walked along, he saw a man who was blind from birth. Jesus disciples asked, Rabbi, who sinned so that he was born blind, this man or his parents? Jesus answered, Neither he nor his parents. This happened so that God s mighty works might be displayed in him. While it s daytime, we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming when no one can work. While I am in the world, I am the light of the world. After he said this, he spit on the ground, made mud with the saliva, and smeared the mud on the man s eyes. Jesus said to him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam (this word means sent). So the man went away and washed. When he returned, he could see. SERMON Where Are You Going? Rev. Robert Burkhart RECEPTION OF RETIREES Bishop: We come here today to celebrate in the presence of God the ministry of the retirees who have loved with their whole hearts, souls, minds, and with all their strength. We celebrate the way they have lived out the call to make disciples, to baptize, to teach, and to lead. We offer our thanksgiving, our love, our support, and our prayers for them in their retirement as they transition to a new phase of ministry. We thank God for the community of the faithful in which the Word of God has found response. We know something of the grace by which you have lived, and we thank God for your vision. Bishop: We thank thee God for those who taught and worked beside them and all who supported them along the way. O God, walk with them as they continue to proclaim your love and continue to feed your sheep in new ways. Amen. 3
