We re on the web! The annual Bismarck/Mandan CROP Walk for Hunger is 1:30 P.M. Sunday, October 6 th, 2013 at the Capitol Grounds. 25% of all money raised for this event stays locally to support the Abused Adult Resource Center, AID, Inc., Bismarck Emergency Food Pantry, and Ruth Meier s Hospitality House. Individuals may choose to walk a shorter route (about 1 mile) or a longer route (about 4 miles). Registration, music, and games for kids will be held at 12:30 P.M. at the Capitol Grounds that same day. Any questions can be directed to Corby Rachel, Faye Rodgers, the church office, or check the information out on Facebook at CROP walk, Bismarck. Donation envelopes are available in the narthex. One season to another. Starting school. The death of a loved one. Welcoming a new Pastor. Change. Our feelings are involved with change. If we think about it, some changes bring joy, excitement, others bring pain, and still others bring both joy and pain. Change. It is something that none of us can escape. Change leaves me feeling out of control and anxious. As you can imagine, my transition from Indiana, to Iowa, to North Dakota was filled with change. In fact the last 9 years of my life have been spent in transition. It seems some times that my life consists of nothing but change. So when I am feeling lost, out of control, and anxious I turn to the resurrection story found in the Gospel of Luke. Luke 24: While they were talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, "Peace be with you." 37 They were startled and terrified, and thought that they were seeing a ghost. 38 He said to them, "Why are you frightened, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? 39 Look at my hands and my feet; see that it is I myself. Touch me and see; for a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have." These words from Luke hit home for me. Jesus says to the unbelieving disciples Peace be with you. It is here in the midst of my out of control, anxious feelings Jesus speaks Peace be with you. Don t you know that am real, flesh and blood, given for you. Don t be afraid I am with you. Do I still get anxious and feel out of control, YES! Yet, I know that I am not in it alone. The resurrected Christ is in it with me speaking into my heart, Peace be with you. Come for good food and fun times. We will be serving every Thursday (unless there is no school). Bring your friends and join us for lunch! GET ON BOARD FOR LUTEFISK! Items needed for the 2013 Lutefisk, Lefse, and Swedish meatball supper which will be held on Saturday, October 19 th, 2013 from 3:30 7:00 P.M. Cash, 110 Dozen Cookies and Bars, 24 Dozen Homemade Buns, 14 Dozen Eggs, 116 Pounds of Butter, 4 Gallons of Milk, 1 bag of powdered sugar, 2 boxes of quart Ziploc bags, 3 containers of salt, 6 bottles of Kitchen Bouquet, 20 boxes gallon Ziploc bags, 25 pounds of flour, and 60 pounds of white sugar. Many workers Friday, October 18 th setup from 10:00 11:30, Saturday, October 19 th - kitchen (many shifts available beginning as early as 7:30 AM through clean up which goes until about 10:00 PM), dining room servers (shifts beginning at 3:00 and 5:30), dishwashers (shifts beginning at 3:30 and 6:00), lefse preparers and bar & cookie arrangers (shifts beginning at 3:00 and 5:30) and clean up (beginning at 7:30). We welcome one and all to participate in this congregational fundraising supperyoung and old alike. We ask that youth not be in the kitchen prep area as there are many hot foods. When serving we would also ask that they please handle the cooler items. Come spend 3 days, 2 nights together having fun, serving the community, worshiping God and growing in faith. No matter who we are, we each hunger for something. At the same time, God has gifted us abundantly and calls us to share these gifts with our brothers and sisters next door and around the globe. This LYO Gathering will have a unique focus. We'll join with ELCA World Hunger to explore how we can make a real difference in the world around us. Pastor Lee led devotions. Approval of Agenda: Brian Zacha moved and Janet Reineke seconded the motion to approve the agenda. Motion passed. Secretary s Report/Review and Approval of the minutes: Darrell Nitschke moved and Brian Zacha seconded the motion to approve the church council minutes of June 20 th, Motion passed. Financial Report/Review: Pastor Lee went over the July financials. We have a deficit of $ of expenses over income through July, 2013 compared with a deficit of $19, through the same period in 2012, a marked improvement. However, much of this is due to the fact that we are understaffed at the present time compared with last year. Unfinished Business: Moving forward in faith: The renovation of the men s restroom downstairs is progressing on schedule with anticipated completion by September 1 st, 2013 Website redesign: Dot Frank and Jackie Schulz have added some new enhancements to the website and Jackie is doing a great job keeping it updated. Strategic Plan 2013: Darrell Nitschke & Pastor Lee have not yet met to discuss formulation of governance team. Jason Tomanek is hard at work with the landscaping project. He is doing a fantastic job of updating the look of the west facade of the facility. Doug VanDaalen continues to provide lawn mowing service again this year. Snow removal options were discussed for this fall/winter. Lindtech s estimates for addressing the remaining air handling issues is being put on hold pending the completion of the restroom project to see how much contingency fund monies may be available. The air handling units are starving for air after the 2007 chancel remodel. The lack of return air puts too much strain on the system as the remodel design provided insufficient return air flow. NEW BUSINESS: Rev. Christina Martin will begin her ministry with us on Sunday, September 1, Pastor Lee will be in contact with the synod office to schedule her installation service after she begins her call. The council wishes to have her welcome gathering coinciding with her installation service. We have been asked to host The Banquet at Trinity Lutheran again next year. After some discussion, Darrell Nitschke moved and Brian Zacha seconded the motion to serve The Banquet on Thursday, May 8 th at Trinity Lutheran in Bismarck. Motion passed.

6 PAGE 6 FIRST LUTHERAN CHURCH OCTOBER 2013 We are having condensate pump issues with the boiler that will need to be rectified before the boiler is used for the next heating season. The pump is shot, the impeller ruined, and it is too old to get parts for. Tammy Lapp-Harris moved and Kris Elijah seconded to get the system repaired as we have to have the system working. Looking for the cheapest bid and repair. Motion passed. REPORTS: Pastor Lee s report 1 baptism, 2 weddings, 5 funerals, 2 additional committal services at the North Dakota Veteran s Cemetery for out of town funerals, communion services at the Care Centers and Library Square II. Pastor Jack s report No report. Special Events Joint informal worship service with Heart River Lutheran Church, Living Water Lutheran church here at First Lutheran on Sunday, August 25 th at 12:30PM. Hamburgers and hot dogs will be provided bring a side dish or dessert to share. Our youth Band, New Escape and Heart River s youth band, Heart River Child lead the music for worship. Stewardship Darrel would like to create a mission and theme for the church as well as initiate a movement towards giving. A team will be put together to help Darrell with this stewardship mission. Worship Hymns are picked out for the 8:30 service for September and October. The hymns for Wednesday worship will be picked out next Wednesday night. Parish Education 37 students are registered for Sunday School so far and 58 for Wednesday school. We are still in need of teachers specifically 3 rd grade/wednesday but also need additional teachers for most grades. Teachers meeting scheduled for 8/27 at 7PM. Rally Day Sunday will be September 8 th Rally Day Wednesday will be September 11 th. VBS went very well thanks to Tammy Lapp-Harris for housing the Camp of the Cross staff for the week. We had 41 kids registered with good comments from the parents. Youth Denver mission trip went very well! Great kids! Served Jefferson County Community Action by helping make school kits for both Jr. and Sr. High Schools, packing food boxes and registering people for aid. The Stock-Holders Supper will be held 8/21 for those who purchased stock in our youth to help them raise funds. Working on WINGS for the upcoming year. Evangelism and Outreach No Report. Property and Management Still looking at snow removal options for the upcoming winter. Website The new site is up and running and just a few minor additions need to made. CORRESPONDENCE: A thank you letter was received from Golden Age Services for the donation of $87.88 to the Home Delivered Meals Program. A thank you card was received from Camp of the Cross from the staff that led VBS for the meals and hospitality. Two thank you letters were received from Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center for the donations of $of $ and $ A thank you card was received from Hannah Fishbeck for the beautiful graduation ceremony at church and the gift of the amazing quilt from the quilters. A thank you card was received from the Western North Dakota Synod Office for our hosting the Portico information meetings for synod leaders. A thank you card was received from Rev. Christina Martin for the beautiful peace plant sent from First Lutheran for her ordination service in Hammond, Indiana. A thank you card was received from Leilani Meyhoff, Rueben Baisch s daughter for the congregation s van service to Edgewood Vista in Bismarck so that he could come here for church services and coffee hour with his niece Jonda and Bill Baer. Motion to Adjourn/Lord s Prayer: Brian Zacha moved and Tammy Lapp-Harris seconded to adjourn the council meeting. Motion passed. The meeting closed with the Lord s Prayer.
