2 We would like to extend to you a warm welcome to The St. Clare Pastoral Center, located in Mount Vernon, Washington. We make every effort to offer a warm and welcoming atmosphere committed to inclusiveness, peace and justice, and the sanctity of all creation. The St. Clare Pastoral Center celebrates the Novus Ordo Mass, known as the Mass of Paul VI that was instituted in This Mass reflects the liturgical changes made after the Second Vatican Council ( ). Because of our concerns over its lack of inclusivity, the Pastoral Center has chosen not to adopt The Third Edition of the Roman Missal, introduced by the Roman Catholic Church on November 27, Our Pastoral Center is here for you, especially if you are seeking a spiritual home committed to the belief that God's love is unconditional and extends to all of us as God's sons and daughters. 3 WHO IS FAMILY? In the gospel, Jesus is being accused of driving out demons because he's in league with evil. It is outrageous, but it does show how some religious people rebelled against him. When his relatives come to be with him, Jesus makes it clear that the deepest bond he has with his brothers and sisters is that we are faithful. Religious practice or authority, and certainly not only a relationship with him, makes us holy. Mark makes the point clearly: "And looking around at those seated in the circle he said, 'Here are my mother and my brothers. [For] whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.'" Real intimacy with Jesus is about communion with him, in fidelity, in following his example. Intimacy happens when our heart becomes more like his and we are draw to a fidelity to the Father and the Father's way. We can ask for the grace, "Make my heart like yours, dear Jesus." 5 Today s gospel passage has a wide range of really complicated images and issues. There is the notion of the prophet not being welcome in his home town, except Mark makes the point in graphic terms those who opposed Jesus had two opinions: he was either mad or possessed by Satan, which in first century Galilee were pretty much the same thing. Then there is the sin of speaking against the Holy Spirit. The point here seems to be tied to the first part of this story. These people heard what Jesus said, and saw what he did, and yet they said that he was no good. Like calling the truth fake news, they labeled someone very good as evil. The reverse would also be true. In both of these cases, if there is a depth of commitment to this view, God will not force anyone to see what is true, will not force anyone to embrace the gift of salvation. God will, however, use any means necessary to help us to see the right, and will rush to forgive us as soon as we realize and want to confess that we were in the wrong. The question of Jesus having brothers has also been used as a polemic. While Catholics are comfortable that the term need not mean children of the same mother, we should not let this obscure what really matters in this passage that those who do God s will are children of God and sisters and brothers of Christ. 7 Profession of Faith [Standing] We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, one in Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, by the power of the Holy Spirit, he was born of the Virgin Mary and became man. For our sake, he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered, died, and was buried. On the third day, he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. Through your goodness, we have this bread to offer, which earth has given and human hands have made. It will become for us the bread of life. Blessed be God forever. For the Wine: Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation. Through your goodness, we have this wine to offer, fruit of the vine and work of human hands. It will become our spiritual drink. Blessed be God forever. Prayer over the Gifts: Presider: Pray, my brothers and sisters, that our sacrifice may be acceptable to the God of all Creation. May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of God's name, for our good and the good of all the Church. Eucharistic Prayer: Presider: The Lord be with you. Presider: Deliver us Lord, from every evil, and grant us peace in our day. In your mercy keep us free from sin and protect us in time of trial as we wait in joyful hope for the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. Breaking of the Bread: Lamb of God Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us, have mercy on us.
