1 Service of Worship Third Sunday of Easter May 4, 2014 Eleven o clock in the morning Keeping the heart of the University listening to the heart of God The Road to Emmaus, by He Qi, Today we are in the third week of Eastertide, a season of celebration and formation, in which people are called to ministry in the name of the Risen Lord. In the lesson from Acts, Peter calls upon all of Jerusalem to repent and reorient their lives around Jesus, and 3000 people believe and are baptized. The gospel lesson is the story of the risen Jesus meeting two forlorn disciples on the road to Emmaus and being made known to them in the breaking of the bread. In these sacraments, Christ is made known, and lives are transformed.

2 The congregation is asked to remain silent during the prelude as a time of prayer and meditation. The Chapel welcomes families with children. If at any time during the service your child needs a place for active play, please know there is a nursery in the Chapel basement. We specifically remember all those employed in service roles housekeepers, groundskeepers, maintenance workers, food service employees, and all those occupations that are often overlooked. One of the Chapel s housekeepers, Oscar Dantzler, brings a housekeeping cap to the altar. In Durham we remember those who live with mental illness and the organizations and people who seek to walk with them. The ushers bring forward a flower. A child and youth member of the Congregation at Duke University Chapel bring forward offerings collected in the children and youth Sunday School classes.

6 Chapel Announcements Today s Flowers Flowers for today s worship service are given to the glory of God in loving memory of Congregation member Claudia Moore by her son, Joshua Bond. Today s Mission of the Month Offering Today s Mission of the Month is Benevolence Farm. Benevolence Farm provides stable housing and gainful employment to women coming out of NC prisons. This program is designed to implement innovative and effective solutions to the crippling obstacles formerly incarcerated women face. Benevolence Farm began stewarding 11 acres of donated land in Graham last year and recently secured a neighboring house where programming will begin until more substantial quarters are constructed. Residents will grow their own food and sell harvests at farmers markets and to restaurants. A portion of harvests will be shared with low-income families through local food pantries. Today s Guest Choir The Pinecrest High School Choral Program from Southern Pines, NC, strives to provide students with meaningful and exceptional musical experiences that contribute to the growth of intellect, responsibility, and excellence. The Chamber Ensemble is one of two advanced choirs offered at Pinecrest High School, and consists mainly of students in grades The choirs regularly perform for the school and the community, and are often sought after to perform for local events. The Chamber Ensemble has a long history that includes national performances and superior festival ratings and honors as well as performances at the NCMEA state conferences in 2009 and Chapel Interns Today marks the conclusion of two Divinity internships. Andrew Wolfe has served at the Chapel s Worship Intern and Michelle Wolfe (unrelated) has been the Chapel s Student Ministry Associate. Both Andrew and Michelle have been hard-working additions to the Chapel staff and we are grateful for their work. Andrew is getting married in May and will move to Texas to serve a United Methodist church. Michelle is getting married in August and will be moving to New York City. The Chapel wishes them the best! News About the Chapel Last week the University announced an extended closure of the Chapel nave for a restoration project that will rehabilitate the ceiling, replace the roof, restore several stained glass windows and much of the woodwork, and clean the floors and walls. Next year, the Chapel nave will close to the public on May 11, 2015, and reopen in the spring of The Chapel community will continue to worship together each week and Sunday services will remain on campus during the restoration project. The Chapel s Media Ministry will also continue during this time. This time of restoration will be an opportunity for the Chapel community be a church without walls, and live into the long-held belief that the Chapel is more than just a building. For further details regarding the project, and for updates on locations for services and events during the closure, please visit
