Today we celebrate Pentecost, often known as the church s birthday. The name Pentecost comes from the Greek for fiftieth day. Its origins relate to the Jewish harvest festival of Shavuot, which commemorates God s giving of the law on Mt. Sinai. Pentecost marks the day when the Holy Spirit descended on the disciples in Jerusalem fifty days after Easter. We celebrate today with a festive children s procession.

Sharing of the Bread and Wine All who love Christ, earnestly repent of their sins, and seek to be at peace with God and neighbor are invited to receive communion. Wine is used for communion. Grape juice is available upon request at the communion station near the exit, stage-left. If you have a gluten allergy, there is a server at stage-right who will be ready to serve you gluten-free wafers and wine. If you will not receive communion, you are welcome to come forward to receive a blessing, indicated by crossing your arms over your chest. If you would like to receive individual anointing with oil and prayers for healing, ministers are through the hallway exit, stage-left, during Communion. 6 The Congregation at Duke University Chapel The following Congregation opportunities are open to all. Christian Education Beginning June 7, the Congregation will offer opportunities for all age groups on Sunday mornings from 9:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. in the Biddle Music Building. There will be no Sunday morning classes on May 24 or May 31. Wee Praise: children ages 0-3 with parents or caregivers, 102 Biddle Children/Youth Choir: children age 4 and up and youth, 101 Biddle Adult/Youth Class: Acts of the Apostles Bible Study, 104 Biddle Playgroup Young children and their caregivers are invited to gather on Tuesday, May 26, at 10:30 a.m. in Oval Park, 210 West Club Blvd., Durham, for fellowship and playground fun. Pictures This Week Appointments are still available to have a professional photograph taken this week as part of the Congregation s preparation for publication of a pictorial directory.
