A King for Our Times A Service Honoring the Life and Legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. SUNDAY, JANUARY 14, 2018 The problem of transforming... is a problem of power confrontation of the forces of power demanding change and the forces of power dedicated to the preserving of the status quo. Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in Where Do We Go From Here?
ORDER OF SERVICE SUNDAY, JANUARY 14, Opening Music Stand Up! Speak Out! by Raymond Wise People stand on streets because they have no food to eat. It s time to change. Things can t stay the same. So what you gonna do? Stand up, speak out. Let the world know. It s time for change. Things can t stay the same. People can t be free to live their lives as they believe. It s time for change People still are judged by race, by color, and by creed. It s time for change Stand up, speak out We ll make a difference. Things won t be the same. It s time to change. Opening Words Rev. Jay Leach, Minister +*Opening Song Oh, I Woke Up This Morning African American spiritual Oh, I woke up this morning with my mind stayed on freedom. Woke up this morning with my mind stayed on freedom. Woke up this morning with my mind stayed on freedom, Hal-le-lu, Hal-le-lu, Hal-le-lu-ia. I was walking and talking with my mind... I was singing and praying with my mind...
*Chalice Lighting Words +*Chorus Oh, I woke up this morning with my mind stayed on freedom. Woke up this morning with my mind stayed on freedom. Woke up this morning with my mind stayed on freedom, Hal-le-lu, Hal-le-lu, Hal-le-lu-ia. Welcome Reading by Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. from "Why We Can't Wait" +*Song Freedom is Coming South African, 20 th c. Oh freedom, oh, freedom, oh freedom, Freedom is coming! [Repeat entire verse] Oh yes I know, oh yes I know, oh yes I know! Freedom is coming! [Repeat entire verse] Sermon Sovereignty and Freedom Marcus Bass Musical Interlude Hymn to Freedom by Oscar Peterson
Readings Galatians 5:13-14 and from "Beyond Vietnam" by Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. +*Song Come and Go With Me African American spiritual Come and go with me to that land where I m bound. Come and go with me to that land where I m bound. They ll be freedom in that land... They ll be justice in that land... Sermon Justice Is Essential to Love Bree Newsome Musical Interlude There Is More Love Somewhere Meditation and Aspiration
Musical Offering Ella s Song by Bernice Johnson Reagon We who believe in freedom cannot rest. We who believe in freedom cannot rest until it comes. Until the killing of black men, black mothers sons Is as important as the killing of white men, white mothers sons. That which touches me most is that I had a chance to work with people Passing on to others that which was passed on to me. To me young people come first, they have the courage where we failed And if I can but shed some light as they carry us through the gale. The older I get, the better I know that the secret of my going on Is when the reins are in the hands of the young who dare to run against the storm. Not needing to clutch for power, not needing the light just to shine on me, I need to be on in the number as we stand against tyranny. Struggling myself don t mean a whole lot, I ve come to realize That teaching others to stand up and fight is the only way our struggle survives. I m a woman who speaks in a voice, and I must be heard; Sometimes I can be quite difficult, I ll bow to no man s word, uh. Concerns of the Congregation and Offering Words
Music Go Down, Moses / Wade in the Water African American Spirituals, arranged by Larry Shackley An Affirmation of our Faith (please remain seated) by Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. from Letter from a Birmingham Jail Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. Never again can we afford to live with the narrow, provincial "outside agitator" idea. Anyone who lives inside the United States can never be considered an outsider anywhere within its bounds. Music From this House by Ben Allaway From this house to the world we will go hand in hand... Closing Words
*Closing Song We Shall Overcome We shall overcome, we shall overcome, we shall overcome someday! Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe we shall overcome someday! We ll walk hand in hand... We shall all be free... Service Notes Thank you to the pledging members of this congregation whose generosity makes our Sunday services possible. Marcus Bass, John Herrick, Jay Leach and Bree Newsome contributed to the planning of today s service. The Adult Choir sings under the direction of John Herrick. Fred Hutchinson plays drums. John Herrick plays the piano and djembe. The vocal quintet for Ella s Song is comprised of Donna Fisher, Mary Hackenberg, Lisa Lackey, Judy Love and Wendy Pond. Jenn McLeod sings the solo in From this House. RAS and Doug Swaim assist with A/V for today s services. Large print copies of the Order of Service and personal hearing assistance devices are available on the table at the entrance to the Sanctuary. Images With the exception of one public domain photograph (the Why We Can t Wait image), the images in today s service are photographs by Jay Leach from the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial in Washington, D.C. and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change in Atlanta, Georgia.
