Mission and Faith First Terry asked that we hold Faith First around the Baptismal Font to remind us of our baptism and to ask us to reflect on whether we are truly baptized. In keeping with Pope Francis call for a day of prayer for peace, Heidi shared a prayer for peace. All were asked to bless themselves with the waters from the Font and share where they were baptized. All proceeded back to the Brennan Library where we shared the Mission and Vision statements. II. Mission Effectiveness and Pulse of the Parish Heidi shared an experience in the front office with Judy Petrie and a couple of women looking to run a blood drive. They were struck by the friendliness and camaraderie of the staff. Joe said that his niece, whom he s been trying to get to visit Holy Family, surprised him at mass this past weekend. They loved it and he s hoping they will become parishioners. Tony noted the faith year has begun with the largest enrollment in 12 years. He said Peg did a very nice presentation to the parents and it s looking to be a good year. Al shared that they had good results from the volunteer cards for the first month of this 12-month volunteer drive. III. Approval of the August Council Minutes There was a motion to approve the minutes by Jack Shedd Motion was seconded by Al Clementi All were in favor. 1 Holy Family Catholic Community, 2515 W. Palatine Road, Inverness, IL,
IV. Director Report: 2017 Lenten Social Justice o Sue Geegan revisited a couple of the past Lenten Social Justice projects we have held. She shared that for 2017 she is looking at once again working with Catholic Extension Society and doing something in Cuba. She has presented this to the Directors who were positive about it but also had some concerns. She introduced Tom Gordon the CEO from Catholic Extension Society. o Tom shared information about how CES operates, whom they work with and whom they report to. o Tom introduced his co-workers, Bill Mayet who is a Director for CES and Sylvia Zaldevar who will be leading the drive to fund the Cuba initiative. o Tom gave a presentation to the group about their recent trip to Cuba and their findings as far as life in Cuba for its people and Catholic Churches currently and over the last 60 years. He noted that under the current government, churches are being returned to their local Archdiocese but all are in need of significant repair or rebuilding. At this time Cubans still cannot build new churches. o Tom shared that CES is looking to raise money to help the Cuban people repair and rebuild some of their churches. Tom pointed out that two Catholic organizations out of Germany have been aiding churches in Cuba for over 50 years and have not had an issue. He also reported on the money trail and how it gets from places like Holy Family to the Archdiocese in need in Cuba. o Tom noted that the mission of CES is to bring the Catholic Church to people that don t have the opportunity. He stated there is no place where people are hungrier for the church than in Cuba. o Tom stated that CES has begun 6 pilot projects in Cuba that should all be finished by December. o Sue state that she had asked CES to come share their project idea as it is a very different type of Lenten Social Justice project for Holy Family. She is looking to Pastoral Council for opinions. o Tracey asked if our role would be funding, people in Cuba or both. Sue responded it would be funding. o There were questions about the amount of time we have to make a decision. Sue noted we need to make the decision rather quickly as we have a lot of prep work to do before Lent though CES has done a lot of advance work already. o Jack stated his reservations with a project of this type at this time. He asked what Plan B might be. Sue and Terry shared that to date there isn t a Plan B but we could certainly look into it as CES has many US based projects. Sue and Terry also noted that the directors have recommended this to us. o There was significant discussion. o Tracey asked all members to take no more than a week to think about this project. Any questions should go to both Tracey and Terry. Responses on whether or not to proceed with this project should be sent to Tracey no later than Tuesday September 27,2016, as we have to make a decision by October. 2 Holy Family Catholic Community, 2515 W. Palatine Road, Inverness, IL,
V. Pastor s Report Fr. Terry shared that the Superintendent of Catholic Schools had toured Holy Family and was very impressed. Terry handed out his report and asked in the essence of time that people read it. He did highlight some key points. o A simple prayer service for Unity, Peace and Healing was held September 17 th. About 40 people attended. o A second Taize Evening Prayer for current elected officials and those to be elected is being planned for October 26 th at 7pm. o The Best Kept Secret/Fire Committee has their next meeting October 3 rd. o Family Faith enrollment is up for the first time in 12 years. o Holy Family will host 300 teens and their adult chaperones for the mission trip next summer. It will be held the week of July 16, o Fall Fest is this coming weekend. There are still about 50 tickets available for Friday night s Hops on the Vine. Please reach out and invite friends. VI. Leadership Communities Reports A. Liturgical Life/Music Heidi shared an update from Brian on Liturgy and Pastoral Care. o On October 24,2016 Holy Family will host a Minister of Care cluster meeting with a guest speaker from Catholic Charities. The cluster includes members from St. Theresa, St. Anne, St. Thomas of Villanova, St. Collette and St. Francis de Sales. o The Volunteer/Ministry appeal for Pastoral Care was a success as many have come forward to inquire about involvement. o There is ongoing formation and communication with ministry leads. They continue to assess their needs and look for ways to improve the effectiveness of the volunteers and ministers who serve. o Carrie Crall has helped to reboot the Greeter Ministry. The initial plan is to have the Knights of Columbus serve every second weekend of the month. Parish staff, current and new greeters and possibly rotating between all the different ministries, will tentatively fill the other weeks. o Joe said the Knights are looking at having a teen greet with them each month. o Proclaimers are using a new scheduling system called Ministry Pro, which has proven effective in other parishes. o Liturgy prep is in the process of planning the Advent/Christmas season. o Heidi shared an update from Gene on Music and Technology. 3 Holy Family Catholic Community, 2515 W. Palatine Road, Inverness, IL,
o 95% of the new technology installation has been completed. Remaining items will be completed in the next two weeks. The technology has already made a considerably positive impact on our liturgies and execution of music. From the high definition wide screens to the improved overall EQ of sound in the church. o We have had a small amount of complaints regarding volume since the adjustment. What some people are sensing is greater clarity and not louder volume. Hopefully everybody's ears are on their way to adjusting. o Gene noted new choir mic's were recently installed as well as a new wireless AMBO mic that allows us to rid the sanctuary floor of cables. This gives the sanctuary a cleaner look while also giving us the freedom to move the AMBO wherever we want. o The loft also inherited a new imac computer for all church visuals. The implementation of the new pro presenter software has been well received and successful thus far. o We will be scheduling an in-depth training day with our audio team in the near future. Amplio (the installation company) will be sponsoring this event. o Since the volunteer fair weekend, our choir and band has added several new members. o We have scheduled a team ministry fellowship night on October 13. o Christmas music planning will be taking place in two weeks. o We have successfully standardized uploading and editing weekly homilies to our social media sites. Be sure to check them out on You Tube. o In the last 30 days we have produced, shot, and edited three volunteer videos. o As a result of having a great volunteer member on our team, Kristen Berryhill, we have standardized forms and cleaned up the wedding music selection process in our department. She has also done a tremendous job in helping me maintain, recruit, and grow our teen band on Sunday evenings. B. Parish Support and Services Tracey reported for Ro. We are working on a new format for the annual report. Instead of the typical two pages of numbers in the bulletin, this years report will also include other yearly information updates as well. To go along with the new report format, this year Father Terry will present it instead of someone from the Finance Council. There was a leak in the office area, which upon further investigation lead to the need for tuck-pointing and an extensive repair of the affected area that was unplanned. The new science lab is up and running in the Academy. Teen Report 4 Holy Family Catholic Community, 2515 W. Palatine Road, Inverness, IL,
Thomas reported the Teen Faith kick off took place on September 11 th. Last Sunday the first faith classes of the year were held. Enrollment is up for the first time in many years. The first Faith on Fire was held last Sunday. About 40 teens participated. Kairos 22 is scheduled for November 4-7, Currently 26 teens are signed up to attend. The location of the 2017 Teen Mission Trip will be right here at Holy Family. It is an honor to be hosting this trip. Teens will likely be working in West Chicago. All morning programs will be held in the multitorium. Our teens will be staying at Holy Family as well. Pauline noted that Peg had a good turn out for her parent presentation. This year there is a new web site for use by catechists. There will also be a web site for parents. Deanery Report Chad shared that they are still waiting on the results from the Renew My Church survey. Some surveys were translated into the native languages of the parishioners leading to retranslating the answers to the surveys. Chad noted that Father Ron Lewinski had presented a somewhat expanded version of Renew My Church at their meeting. One of the things discussed at their meeting were the 7 signs of parish vitality or The Cupich 7. They are: o Evangelization o Formation o Leadership Development o Worship o Building Bonds o Support o Transforming Lives Chad shared that the Renew My Church will be rolled out slowly, starting the process in parishes with a self-assessment. The Parish grouping for Vicariate 1 is done. We have been grouped with St. Anne s in Barrington. The goal of this process is to recognize we (parishes) can do things better together than apart. There are 15 openings in Vicariate 1 for Directors of Religious Ed. There are 2 new members in Vicariate 1, Ryan Rehkamp and Marta Stepniak. The Vicariate also has a new web site. Vic1chicago.org. This can be used to post parish events such as trainings and speakers. Frank asked Chad to relay a couple things from the Archdiocesan Council. o There is a lot of talk about looking to the Catholic Schools for evangelization. o They are looking for a parish to host either the December 14, 2016 meeting or the May 10, 2017 meeting. There would be about 60 people in attendance. Terry will look into it. 5 Holy Family Catholic Community, 2515 W. Palatine Road, Inverness, IL,
Human Concerns Tracey relayed that this will likely be Andrews last meeting due to his travel schedule. She thanked him for his service. Andrew shared that PADS will begin in less than 2 weeks. He is expecting a busy year. Several major holidays and events fall on Sundays this year. They will be reaching out the Knights for help. Journeys has recently been asking parishes to host PADS year around. Andrew stated we have told them we do not have the resources to do that this year. Andrew noted that he will be stepping down as the Director of PADS after this year. He has others working with him this year to transition into the role. The Syrian family we will be assisting arrived today. There is a blood drive scheduled for Sunday. Little Sisters of the Poor will be speaking at all masses on the weekend of October 1 st and 2 nd. VII. Election of At-Large Council Members Tracey shared that we ran a bulletin article looking for those interested in joining Pastoral Council as an At-Large member. Due to some difficulties the announcement from the pulpit was not made. At this time we do not have anyone interested. Please reach out to people who might be a good fit or be interested in being on the council. VIII. Other Remarks Terry and Tracey will discuss whether we will have retreat in November for all current, incoming and outgoing council members. VIIII. Closing Remarks & Prayer Tony Mathias shared closing prayer There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 9:10pm The next meeting date is October 18, Respectfully submitted, Heidi Trocha 6 Holy Family Catholic Community, 2515 W.
