4 Worship Our Anglican liturgical tradition values art, music, and words as expressions of, and pointers to, the presence and glory of God. The word liturgy literally means the people s work, and it refers to our worship as a congregation gathered. Liturgy graciously accepts and connects us with God and one another, addresses the realities of life today, and welcomes all people into participation. Liturgy spiritually feeds us, opens us to the beauty and glory of God, shapes our understanding and love of God, and comforts and challenges us. Liturgy empowers us to be active in the world as heralds of the Gospel. Acolyte Guild Acolytes carry the crosses, candles and other items in procession, and help in a number of important ways throughout the service. Trinity is blessed with one of the largest and most enthusiastic acolyte corps of any church. These young people serve faithfully Sunday after Sunday, as well as feast days, all year-round. 6 Music Contact Dr. Michael Messina, Director of Music - mmessina@trinitychurchindy.org The Music Program at Trinity is diverse, creative, and widely recognized for its depth of repertoire. Special services at Trinity include Choral Evensongs, periodic organ recitals, and guest performances. Christmas is a particularly special time for music. Trinity celebrates the season with a festive Madrigal Dinner and a service of Lessons and Carols. Both of these Christmastide services reach beyond the parish and draw many from the city into our sacred space. Pilgrimage In 2019, the Choir and Choristers will go on Pilgrimage to England, serving as choir in residence at Ely Cathedral for a week. The choir has often traveled as far as England and as near as the Diocese of Indianapolis for growth, service, and enrichment. Performances Besides regular worship services, Music at Trinity offers year round music programming, including Steven Stolen s Meridian Song Project, concerts with choir and orchestra, guest ensembles and soloists, and the Choir Cabaret. 6

7 Choir Learning the music of the Church is very much a part of our core value of education. Singing in the choir includes learning about sacred scripture, church history, theology, liturgy, spirituality and prayer... not to mention vocal technique, breathing, posture and deployment, and other musical skills. Choir members have a wide range of experience and ability, from professional musicians to children having their first musical training. Trinity Choir is a mixed intergenerational choir of professionals and volunteers adults and teens who work hard and love to sing. Rehearsals are held on Wednesdays, from 7-9 p.m. and Sunday mornings. The choir sings Sundays and holidays plus concerts, Evensong, and special programs. Choristers Trinity Choristers is for boys and girls at least 8 years of age or in the third grade. Rehearsals are on Tuesdays from 4:30-6:30 pm, with snacks provided by parents. Choristers sing in church three Sundays/ month (September through Trinity Sunday) as well as holidays, Evensong, and concerts. 7

8 Sunday School & Childcare Contact: Kathleen Strickland, Director of Family and Children Ministries - kstrickland@trinitychurchindy.org At every church program or event, we always consider ways to include and care for children. Every season offers ways to involve our children and youth in the flow of the church year, creatively and joyfully. Trinity is a place where children and youth participate in all sorts of ways, and where the message they are given is that we want them here... where they belong. Sunday school Godly Play: Children from preschool through 2nd grade are taught lessons using the Godly Play method, a Montessori-based method of Christian education and spiritual formation for children. Through storytelling, silence, I wonder questions with art responses, and hands-on work, children encounter the language of our tradition parable, sacred story, silence, and liturgical action and become more fully aware of the mystery of God s presence in their lives. Feasting on the Word: For children in grades 3-6, this is a lectionary-based curriculum that explores the relevance of scripture in daily life and how our Christian faith shapes our choices. Art response, community-building, and service are incorporated into our upper elementary classes. Children s Liturgy of the Word: During the 10am service, children ages 4-4th grade are invited to attend an age-appropriate service of storytelling, reflection, prayer and music during the adult service. Children attend church with their parents and then follow the cross, and Trinity staff, during the second hymn, to the Chapel. They return to Church during the Peace. Childcare Nursery is available on Sundays and during programmed events. On Sundays, nursery is available for children under three years old from 9:45-12:00 noon, in Room 101, first floor of St. Richard s Episcopal School. Contact: Patty Gotway - ingotways@aol.com Youth Programming Contact Missy Roetter, Youth & Parish Life Administrator - mroetter@trinitychurchindy.org Youth at Trinity take part in the four-year program, Journey to Adulthood. The program is defined by two basic precepts: manhood and womanhood are gifts from God, and adulthood must be earned. We celebrate the changes that teenagers experience as we help them grow toward maturity. This program is divided into two, two-year components, Rite-13 and Journey to Adulthood (J2A). Rite-13 For seventh and eighth grade teens, Rite-13 works to establish and maintain cross-gender friendships, establishes the church as a safety zone in the midst of an evolving time in teens lives, and builds a group with shared experiences and memories. Journey to Adulthood (J2A) For ninth and tenth graders, J2A celebrates the transition from teen to adulthood, trains young people in the skills of adulthood, explores the mystery of our faith heritage, and establishes our experience in 8

9 the strength of community and liturgy. J2A focuses on active listening, negotiation, assertion, research/ information management, partnership, and leadership. Through all four years of Journey to Adulthood, the youths travel with the same small group of peers. The bonds they form grow strong and support them. Youth leaders are adults in the congregation who commit to journey with youth through all four years of the program. The end result--young adults who have learned who they are, know they are loved, have confidence in themselves, and have encountered their faith in a safe community. J2A Pilgrimage At the end of J2A, teens go on a spiritual pilgrimage where they participate in mission work and regular spiritual practice in community living. The most recent pilgrimages have been to Iona, Scotland; Juneau, Alaska; Rome, Italy and Banff Alberta Canada. Teens help pay for their travel expenses by participating in a number of volunteer activities and fund-raisers, including cookie bakes, car washes, and Mother s Day flower sales. Young Adults at Trinity (YAT): For juniors and seniors in high school, YAT will meet several times a month after the 10am service for fellowship and theological reflection with retired clergy in our parish community, as well as service opportunities throughout the year. Older teens are also invited to participate as ushers, readers, and Sunday School assistants. During the season of Lent and Eastertide, the Rector and Associate Rector, along with parish mentors, will offer Confirmation classes in preparation for Spring Diocesan Confirmation with the Bishop. Youth opportunities within the Diocese Diocesan Youth Ministry The youth program at Trinity is enhanced by our relationship with the Episcopal Diocese of Indianapolis. Our diocesan youth program offers opportunities for overseas mission, leadership development, and participation in national Episcopal youth programs. Waycross Camp and Conference Center offers a variety of residential summer camps for children and youth ages 8 through 16. Older youth may participate in Leadership in Training and Counselor in Training programs.
