Course Description BI 351 Bible Doctrines 1 Fall 2012 Syllabus Gary Spaeth This class will give you an overview of and familiarization with each of the 10 major doctrines found in the Scriptures. Furthermore, God stated that His people were destroyed for lack of knowledge Timothy fully knew Paul s doctrine (2 Tim 3:10). In this informational, technological generation that we are called to minister in, it seems this world knows everything and everyone but GOD! This class is designed to give you the necessary tools to give God s people that missing knowledge before it is too late. II. Course Objectives This course will endeavor to: 1. Ingrain in the hearts of each student the importance of doctrine. This is a day where doctrine is sacrificed on the altar of unity. Yet, there can be no biblical unity without a biblical foundation. According to Acts, the disciples continued first in the Apostles doctrine. Without proper doctrine, there can be no proper fellowship how can two walk together if they are not agreed? 2. Show how a correct doctrinal understanding (based on a literal approach) helps equip you as you endeavor to share the Gospel. Consider the following: a. When I am presenting Christ, I am covering Christology. b. When I am discussing man s sin, I am covering anthropology and hamartiology. c. When I am using the Bible, I am dealing with Bibliology. d. When I say God loves you, I am now in Theology. e. When I say that Heaven and Hell are eternal, I am covering eschatology. f. When I mention that the Spirit will give eternal life, I am dealing with pneumatology and soteriology. NOTE: The presentation of the Gospel is an exercise of doctrine in the most practical way possible! 3. Place an emphasis on sound doctrinal exposition that supersedes our preconceived ideas concerning favorite doctrinal issues. The time will come when men will not endure sound doctrine. For example, Paul was neither a Calvinist nor Armenianist.

By virtue of the fact that you are a Bible College student, people will automatically expect you to have the answers to tough biblical questions.. III. 5. Equip each student with the necessary tools to defend the faith that has been once delivered to the saints. This class is not just preparatory for an oral examination; it is a preparation for a life of ministry. True ministry is always connecting people to the Word. Course Requirements 1. Reading: read through Elemental Theology, Emery H. Bancroft, and answer any five of the study questions found at the end of each chapter. These questions MUST be answered from the reading NOT the class lectures. DUE See Schedule 2. Memorization: each verse must be memorized including the chapter and verse. Quizzes: be prepared to be quizzed on memory verses and previous material. IV. Spiritual and Academic Integrity Classroom Behavior: 1. Arrive on time. 2. Each student must participate in class discussions. 3. Bring notebook or computer to class to take notes. 4. No sleeping during class. Attendance Policy If you are anywhere from 1 to 9 minutes late, you will be counted as late; if you are 10 minutes or more late, you will be counted as absent. If you leave class 10 minutes or more early, you will be counted as absent. In your student portal, you are able to track your attendance. If you miss more than fifteen (15) percent of this class, you will be automatically dropped from the roster and receive an F for the course. The amount missed contains the accumulation of tardies, cuts, and any other absences. Academic Honesty: Cheating, plagiarism, collusion, and any act designed to give an unfair advantage to the student (such as, but not limited to, submitting the same written assignment for two courses or providing false or misleading information in an effort to receive a postponement or an extension on a test, quiz, exam, or other assignment) is considered cheating and will not be tolerated. Plagiarism: Plagiarism is the unauthorized use or close imitation of the language and thoughts of another author and the representation of them as one s own original work. Common forms of plagiarism are copying words or ideas and not giving the author credit for them by providing proper reference. Another author s specific words must be placed within quotation marks with an appropriate reference given. Another author s ideas must include an appropriate reference. You may choose to use appropriate footnotes, endnotes, or parenthetical references.
