1 Winsted United Methodist Church 630 Main Street, Winsted, CT Mail: P.O. Box 380, Winsted, CT Pastor: Rev. Florence Eddins June 2018 Secretary: Issy Skilton Website: Church Thank You - - Barbara Osborn, for playing the drums (real, not electronic!) for several services in May! Also for diligent work on the church financial audit. - Brandy McLean, for pulling up the grate in the sanctuary so that a piece of the drum set could be retrieved. And also, with Richard, for helping out with coffee hours and bell-ringing, etc. - John Lundy, for pruning the bushes between the church property and the Tort Museum, and for numerous other jobs around the church, including vacuuming the meeting room and cleaning downstairs. - Darlene Grant, for providing lovely flowers for either side of our entry steps, and also for getting folks to move the piano back to its proper place in the sanctuary. - Issy, John L, Norma Jarvis, Sandy, Mark Tacinelli, Karen (a new friend through Sandy), Cathy Gouthier (sold her own cards, but added greatly to the day), Minna (baked an apple pie for the sale!), Gail and Arlene, JoElin, Kathy L, and all others who worked hard and helped out or came to the rainy-day Tag Sale. - Heidi Mertz, for providing a lovely floral arrangement for the altar for Mother s Day. - Mark Tacinelli, for volunteering to handle the Blessing of the Animals on May 19. (The Pet Parade was canceled due to the rain, but Mark and Sandy were well-prepared for the event.) - Sandy, for lots of work on 5/19 and for caring about seasonal decor for our church. - Those who will preach in June: Adeline, Kathy Loomis, John Lundy, and Mark Tacinelli. Our congregation is blessed to have folks willing to share their gifts in this way! - Candy, Stephanie, and all others who helped with the Meatloaf Dinner on 5/23. - All of you who have blessed me, Florence Eddins, by showing interest and support as Woody and I prepare to make our big move to Maryland. You have made me feel loved!! From the Outgoing Pastor... It is official: Adeline Hazzard is being appointed to the Winsted UMC as your next pastor! She will bring enthusiasm and probably some new ways; she also cares deeply about our church and already knows many of you who make up our congregation. Since she and her husband, Mark, already live in the parsonage, there will be no need to move in a new pastor. Adeline will officially become your pastor on July 1, Some folks have asked me whether Adeline, appointed as a Lay Pastor/Local Pastor, will be able to officiate at Holy Communion. The answer is YES! Adeline will be able to perform baptisms and the Sacrament of Holy Communion in this church to which she is being appointed. She will be able to officiate at weddings and funerals. In other words, she will be your pastor! Change can be a mixed bag. I have seen one pastor being compared to another lots of times in lots of churches. But we used to do it this way! can be a challenging refrain in a church. New ways, when explained and understood, can open up fresh ministries and give the Holy Spirit (God s hands-on Presence among us) a chance to make us new! It s all an adventure!! Dear people of Winsted UMC, I doubt that you realize how much of a blessing you have been for me. I came here thinking that this church would probably have to close; YOU (and, I believe, God) had other ideas! Your commitment to the Food Pantry and the Christmas Boxes and the Thrift Shop, your persistence in studying the Bible, and your determination to welcome anyone who enters this church building, all combined to reveal deep Christian faith and commitment to follow Jesus in the world today. You taught me by your experiences, you caught my heart with your humility, and you astounded me by the many abilities and gifts God has given you! I like to joke, God can use anybody, but I believe that this is profoundly true. God knows where we re good and where we re not so good, and God has holy plans for each of us, whether we re just starting out on our life journeys or

2 wondering why we are still alive. God nudges folks to notice someone hurting or unsure; God nudges somebody to notice that others can sing or play the piano or read really well or cook meals or play the drums or organize things or welcome others... It s a Christian s duty to be attentive to God s nudges! When I came to this church, we thought Winsted UMC was a poor (in terms of money) congregation. Now, our money situation is holding its own (be wise in watching your expenses!) and the spirit here is one of wondering what God is going to do next! I see you as a richly blessed church, and I thank God for the opportunity to have been with you for six years! During June, if you want to talk or have a prayer need, my phone number will remain the same ( ) and you may feel free to call me. It will be a local call for you. If you find yourself driving down near Baltimore, come visit us: Cabery Road, Ellicott City, MD (Please call first so that I can clean up!) My should remain the same, too: feddins11@comcast.net. I close this by sharing part of my favorite Affirmation of Faith, # 883 in the hymnal: We are called to be the church: to celebrate God s presence, to love and serve others, to seek justice and resist evil, to proclaim Jesus, crucified and risen, our judge and our hope. In life, in death, in life beyond death, God is with us. We are not alone. Thanks be to God! Through you I have been given great blessing. May God continue to work among and through you in such ways that the blessings continue, for all of you and for the Winsted community. I thank God and you, in Jesus name, AMEN. - Florence Eddins Congratulations Congratulations goes out to Debby Kerr on the birth of her first Grandchild - a little boy named Emmet Samuel. As of May 15 th Debby said that Emmet weighs 10 pounds, has cubby cheeks and is very healthy. Debby said he looks like he has nuts stored in his cheeks! Welcome to Candy Williams who joined the church on Sunday May 27 th. Candy is our cook with the monthly dinners and has recently been made Financial Assistant Secretary. Welcome Candy you have always been a member of our church family, and are now officially a member of the church family. Contact Jane Williams at Jwilliams@NCCC.edu or call A Bit OF History Winsted United Methodist Church, built in 1833 TRUSTEES and dedicated in 1834, the second Methodist The main discussion at the Trustees was the finishing the church had a long tradition in the community, Sanctuary with plaster work. Jansen Masonry was going though not always peaceful. Due to their to be contacted to look at where the water came in in the deviation from orthodox Congregationalism and Narthex and then fix it. Once the water has been stopped, in some cases the accepted political party, then the inside of the Narthex can be finished. A list of members, especially preachers, faced persecution. items that need to be attended to at the parsonage were as Their early resistance to slavery (one of their follows: The chimney needs to be recapped, a new faucet members home was a stop on the Underground has to be put in the kitchen sink, a hook up is needed for Railroad) and their support of temperance tainted the refrigerator, the garage door opener needs to be fixed, them with radicalism. Yet, their radicalism only the lights, wiring, toilet and sink all need to be replaced in went so far. Men and women were not allowed to the upstairs bathroom. The lights in the kitchen and sit on the same side of the church, and pews were dining room have been changed to LED thanks to Ron auctioned off to pay the minister s salary. In Bessette. Pastor Florence suggested that we look to see if 1904, there is any difference in the electric usage since replacing the bulbs with the LED bulbs. John was asked if he would replace the sod that has been dug up from and plowing and he said yes. Issy Skilton reported that the fire extinguishers and the exit lights have been inspected and fixed where needed. Benefit Dinner for Lucy Riley On Saturday June 16 th there will be a Pasta Supper with continuous servings 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m at St. Paul s Lutheran Church 837 Charles Street, Torrington. $10.00 per person $5.00 children ages 5-10, under 5 free. 4 Daniels, and Barbara Osborn there was quite a The committee of 3 (John Lundy, Sandy Taylor, and Issy feast. Sunday afternoon, John came in and I Skilton) are happy to announce that we made a profit of watched him pack up a lot of the stuff that was $ I guess that s pretty good, considering the left over from the tag sale. Monday morning, Issy weather and the fact that the Pet Parade had been came in and started packing stuff and then John cancelled. Thanks to all that came and helped. Norma came in and they packed everything and John Jarvis, Gail Palmer, Jo Ellen Williams, Pastor Florence, took it all downstairs. During the week, John John, Sandy and me. Thanks to all who contributed items, came in and cleaned the kitchen downstairs. Then we had quite an array. In between selling stuff, we had a like clockwork, Stephanie and Candy came in to lot of lively conversations going on and a lot of laughter. start preparing the food for the meatloaf dinner. I heard that all was delicious. In between times, there have been a few secret meetings and I found out that those were for a going away party for Pastor Florence. And then Sunday came, the last Sunday for Pastor Florence. The music was THE BAT excellent, the choir sang a lot of familiar hymns and the congregation joined in, Candy became a I keep saying every month that this month was busier than the last month and it holds true again for May. Do you humans ever stop? This month started out slow but ended up with a Bang! Speaking of BANG, sometimes the Bat takes a little nap during the service on Sunday. This one Sunday, I was checking my eyelids for holes and all of a sudden there was this banging, Whoa, I was awake and and saw Barbara O. Playing her drums, Nice job Barbara, that s one way to keep us all on our toes. On a Thursday night was a meeting in the Meeting Room with the SPR committee and the District Superintendent. It was all very hush. hush until Sunday Service when it was announced that Adeline Hazzard has been appointed our new minister. Then came the Trustee Meeting. They were talking about the Narthex and the pointing and then Barbara Hawley announced that there wouldn t be a meeting in June, but would have a combined meeting with Church Council. The time in the middle of the week was pretty much the same, Issy coming to work, sometimes John would come in and work on something, Bible Study was every week and I pretty much just hung around. around. Friday Issy and John were unwrapping items and putting them on the tables. Something is going on. Then Issy came in with a sign that said Tag Sale. I heard they were going to have it outside, but the weather outside was not good for tag sales or bug catching, so we all stayed inside. Then Sunday, another meeting! This was a transitional meeting to prepare the congregation, Pastor Florence and Adeline for all the changes. Now this picked up my Bat ears, what? Pastor Florence is leaving? Oy, the bat took this news hard and I went into my belfry to contemplate this. I get it, Pastor Florence is moving on and Adeline is coming in. Okay, the Bat can handle that. Before the transitional meeting guess what you humans did? Why eat of course. Thanks to Debby Kerr, Arlene member, Pastor Florence delivered her last sermon, and the church came alive with voices, organ, and drums playing Shine Jesus Shine after service all you humans went into the Social Room and partied. A picture slide show was going on, thanks to Sheila and Janet, beautiful flowers thanks to Sandy, Patty and Gail, food was being brought up from the kitchen, thanks to Candy and Jo Elin, the room was decorated beautifully, thanks to Patty and her crew. Everyone ate, some got up to share a special memory with Florence, Florence spoke to all and then cut the cake. Wow, what a party. And that pretty much ends the month The Bat Registration is now open for a Christian Summer Camp in Ashford, CT for children ages 8 through 12. The dates are Monday, July 9th Friday, July 13th (overnight 5 days and 4 nights).cost is $35 per child for the week, transportation included from Winsted and back. For more information visit: or call Scrip Cards Yes, here I am again, bugging you guys about Scrip Cards. What can I do to get you to buy these cards. Is the time of the month the problem,

5 because I can change the date to the first Sunday, or what ever works. This is such a great money maker, I can t understand why I can t get more people involved in it. Let me know of any recommendations. Issy Game Night The date of June 30 th has been set for game night. At 7:00 p.m. be prepare to have a lot of fun. If you have a game you want to play, bring it with you, if you want to be a spectator and just watch, come on down, if you want to bring a snack, bring it on. No charge, no work, just fun. Hope to see you there. Crafting Alert When we had the tag sale, someone brought in a box of books that were mostly craft books. Gail Palmer suggested that instead of selling them that they be put out for people in the congregation to use. The idea is that anyone that wants to work on a craft, can borrow a book and make something for the Christmas Fair to sell. If you are interested, the books are in the Social Room in the bookcase. It s never to early to start making items for sale for the Christmas Fair. Thinking Ahead As you empty out your coffee cans, please bring them to the church for the Cookie Walk. We still use the pint and quart and will need them for this years event. If you bring them in whenever, they get wrapped as they come in so there isn t the rush to wrap 50 cans at one time. Thanks. Marilyn s Pantry New people are still coming in and the last Thursday of the month there were 12 people in and half of them were new. Norma Jarvis and I went shopping at Aldi s and John carted it all into the church and I marked it and put it away, so the shelves look good. We spent around $ and still have over $2, in the bank. Many thanks to all who have brought food in for the Panty, every package of soup or can of vegetables helps. Missions As you have probably noticed, Carol is no longer sitting at her toll booth. She is retiring from doing the Christmas Child Shoe boxes. You know what this means, we need someone to step up and take over for Carol. What Carol did was to order the boxes, put them and the paper work out, made pictures of the church with envelopes to enclose in the boxes, had her toll booth to raise money for the postage, and every week reminded us in church to be sure and take a box and fill it. Then when the time came, she and Jim would take all the boxes to the drop off. If you have any questions ask Carol, or if you want to take it over, let Issy know. Thanks. Words for Thought When arguing with a stupid person, make sure they aren t doing the same thing.

6 "What lies behind us and what lies before us are small matters compared to what lies within us. And when we bring what is within us out into the world, miracles happen. Henry Stanley Haskins Monthly Dinner\ The monthly dinner will be BBQ Chicken, Potato Salad, Baked Beans, Salad, Corn Bread, Beverages, and Home Made desserts. $11.00 for adults, $6.00 for kids under 12. To make a reservation call or sign up in the Social Room. Anyone wanting to volunteer to make a dessert, or set up, or clean up, or wait on tables, sign up in the Social Room. Remember you can eat in or take out or have the dinner delivered in the Winsted area. A Gift For All Of Us We have received a gift of a lovely china cabinet from Marian Taylor, via Sandy. The cabinet has been placed in the Meeting room and as I type, Barbara Hawley is in there cleaning it. It will be used to hold all the items needed for Social Hour. Big thanks to Cliff Hoxie and John Lundy for suppling the muscles to get the cabinet from Sandy s place to the church. Thank you to Marian, Sandy, Cliff, and John - don t you love it when Christmas happens all year long! Landscaping John Lundy has been doing a lot of work outside already. He has moved brush piles, replaced up turned sod and seeded it. What he needs now is people to help weed around the trees and shrubs, sweep the stairs and sidewalks, plant flowers, you know, the stuff you do at your own home to make it beautiful. John is looking at the first and second Sat. As work days, if you can help, see John. Thank You Dear Winsted UMC Folks, You sent me off into whatever retirement will be with such grace and love and generosity that I am still "up" from all you did! Thank you!! Your cards and hugs and gifts were overwhelming, and the slide show and great pictures and gorgeous decor and flowers and food (Mark H did NOT drop that cake!) were amazing! I think we all found blessing and hope in the presence of the children; I felt such joy that they were there! Thank you! You have blessed me more deeply than you can know, throughout the six years we have had together. May the energy and hard work and inspiration you shared on Sunday continue as you step forward as God's people into a new chapter of this adventure! May God bless you and lead us all! With love, appreciation, and respect, Florence a
