1 Please keep in our Prayers Our customers of the Food Pantry. Our AA participants. Those who have been sick this month and confined to home or hospital for various medical concerns. Those who live at the margins of society who are afraid to reach out where there is help. For World Peace let us be the instruments and the light.. Those facing medical tests surgeries and treatments. That our plans are your plans, O God. Prayers for a resolution to our interior work and provisions and means to complete it. Prayer requested for our faith journey as we continue our bible studies and grow small groups for spiritual growth. For those who have experienced a change in their lifestyle within the past month. The Homeless in this dreadfully cold weather. Our first responders. Our church as we continue to grown and discern God s will for our mission in the world. Marilyn s Pantry The pantry has been the recipient of lots of donations. The Simsbury Methodist Church came out with a car full of food as well as hats, gloves and socks. A week later Avon Methodist Church came out with food, handmade hats, afghans and scarves and new socks, gloves, umbrellas and hats. The shelves are full. We are so lucky to receive so many wonderful things to be able to give to the less fortunate. Thanks to all that bring in items. Issy Skilton
2 January Birthdays The Bat 2 Roger Jones 4 Erica Harrington 5 Zachary Komons 6 Mark Tacinelli 7 Edward Nash, Jr. 9 Sarah B. Skilton 12 Al Carty 13 Laura Wilkins 16 Kelly J. Ellsworth 25 Ben Humphrey 25 Ariana Davis 28 Ian Jarvis Wow, where did everyone go? December was so busy and January has been a little on the quiet side. Wait - I typed too soon, the first Sunday of January, everyone had food in hand and stayed after church for lunch. Then three men came in and talked about - guess - Food! During the week has been very quiet. I heard a lot of you humans have gone off on a vacation and the other missing persons are sick. John surprised me two Sats. In a row - he picked up the bread and sweets for Candy & Jo Elin who were both out of commission. Mary Pat is back from inspecting the Alps and Barbara H. Is back from Arizona and Debbie Kerr is back from California. It s good to see familiar faces in their spots in the Sanctuary. Speaking of a familiar face, how great was it to see Evelyn Burnham and her sister in church? The bat has missed you. Then one Sunday just as Pastor Adeline was asking for prayer concerns, someone asked how Bill Perry was doing, and right on cue in strolls Bill looking wonderful. Welcome back Bill! One day the members of Bible Study started moving tables and chairs - I know what that means, something is going to happen. Come to find out, Dawn Zierzow passed away and her funeral was happening on Thursday. Patty, Gail, and John were setting the tables and putting out decorations. Stephanie had the coffee all set and ready to be plugged in the next morning. Thursday morning there were a couple of hitches, but eventually everything worked out. I wish I had a camera, after everyone left John was busy rearranging the tables and chairs and Issy was up to her elbow washing dishes! Corky and Patty came in the next day and dismantled the nativity scene and brought all the statues inside. Corky continued to dismantle the manger and Patty hauled the statues upstairs. During the month the Simsbury Methodist Church sent in bags of food, gloves, and socks and the Avon Methodist came in twice with food, afghans, hats, socks, umbrellas, and gloves. On top of this is the usual going ons. Patty brings in sandwiches for Bible study and if she is in Maine, Candy steps in, John makes coffee for Bible Study and Sunday morning, Sandy works the thrift shop Sat., sets up for Sunday Social Hour and does all the decorating, Joe comes in and hands out bags from the Pantry, Gail and Norma Jones pick up the mail, Sue comes in and pays the bills and Jo Elin and Candy bring in the bread from Stop and Shop. Sometimes, everyone is here at once and other times it s one at a time. The bat likes living here - there s something going on all the time. For instance, the last couple of days a young man has been here doing community service and he has been scrubbing the pews and really giving the Social Room floor a good scrubbing. Great timing, because I heard there is a dinner going on the first Sat. In Feb. Watch for me, I ll be hanging around. The Bat
3 Avon Dinners Free Community Lunch The Avon Methodist Church is bringing out a luncheon on February 2, 2019 at 12:00 p.m. The menu is meatloaf, smashed potatoes, mixed vegetables, applesauce, coleslaw, deserts and beverages. In the future, the Pastor is planning to offer a free movie in the sanctuary after the Luncheon. Movie with a message Scrip Orders for Scrip are due the last Sunday of every month. This year s profit wasn t as good as past years. The profit was $ and the total in the bank is $2, Thanks to all who participated this past year. Issy Skilton Our Monthly Potluck Lunch will be February 24, 2019! This monthly fellowship event will be held the last Sunday of each month in place of Coffee hour and we will attempt to have a speaker from the community to talk about their business and services. Please mark your calendar, The Mural project leaders will come and speak about that project in town. Suggestions for future guest speakers would be welcome, please speak with anyone who is on the SPR committee Deb Kerr, Chair or Pastor Adeline.
4 From the Pastor s Study, This month is Black History Month, a month for us to consider our role in the history and equality of all God s children, regardless of race, color or creed. There is a great deal of pain in the world, notably around our differences. Jesus came to us as God s Son for all people, there is nothing in the Bible that says anything different and yet we fight about our differences all the time. If you have taken on a leadership role in our church your pastor gave you a booklet with guidelines based on our Methodist Discipline and because you said yes to servant leadership in the Winsted United Methodist Church. God call us all who call themselves Christian to faithful discipleship, to grow to maturity in faith ( Ep 4). The United Methodist Church expresses that call in our shared mission to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. As you lead your group remember to invite Jesus to your meetings ask for His guidance and wisdom. You are doing powerful and wonderful work. Think of mistakes and foibles as learning opportunities, don t forget to celebrate your successes. Fill your work with love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control Gal5: You and your work area become a blessing when you allow God to work through you to make disciples and transform the world. Begin your meeting with prayer and devotion. Create space for Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Seek to learn about each other and how to work with each other for the purpose of your work area. To better understand the core process as written in paragraph 122, of the UM Discipline think in terms of H.O.P.E. Hospitality, Offer Christ, Purpose, and Engagement. As a leader and member of a work area please keep these areas in mind as we work together to listen and understand each other and our needs. As Jesus works with you, resources, ideas and problemsolving wisdom will be yours, for these things I pray. As your pastor I further pray for you to boldly take on your leadership and work area to come together for nothing less than God s glory, remember what I said about God s Glory, LIGHT the light of the world, where God s love grows, nothing can separate us from it. It is so easy for dark, mean and exclusive thoughts and words to separate us from working together for the good of God s church. Let s put our time and talents together for God s purposes. Pastor Adeline I would like to ask the membership to fill out the following information. Our records are incomplete and sometimes incorrect. We would like to be able to keep in touch in as many ways as possible. By mail, phone and . Please take a few minutes to helps us. Barbara Hawley returned with the class of The other members of the Board include Jerry Hamilton, Cliff Hoxie, and Ron Bessette. Profound thanks go to Corky Stark, Stephanie Stark and Dean Mazza for the great job they have done installing new flooring in the main kitchen. Also, we have a new 3-bay sink, which is yet to be installed. The narthex issues continue to plague us. We are waiting on new beams to replace the rotten beams that help to carry the weight in that section of the building. The balcony ceiling in the sanctuary (on the upstairs social room side) is being worked on. The building needs repointing in many places on the outside to ensure the repairs inside remain dry. The men s room toilet issues continue. Only one commode is usable. We need 21 st century solutions to a 19 th century building.
