1 Volume 26 February 9, 2017 Dear Church Family, A significant meeting happened at church this week as the Sanctuary Task Force met jointly with the new-elected Capital Campaign Committee. At this meeting the plans for the renovation of the sanctuary were shared as we talked about improved access, increased safety, and better care for all who enter our building in the future. We reviewed the enhancements that are possible as the dream begins to become reality. Think of all the improvements and upgrades that you have made to your home since 1984, the year of our last sanctuary renovation! Many of those same upgrades and enhancements are needed in our sanctuary as the house of God, and we are about ready to get the job done. The work will now continue on two fronts: an architectural design team headed by Ussery-Rule Architects and a Capital Campaign Committee of church members who will help us raise the money necessary for construction. The architects will take our concepts and develop the final schematics and eventually the construction documents to guide the renovations. Along the way they will help us determine the scope of the project and arrive at cost estimates. Then the Capital Campaign Committee will develop a case for support and visual sketches for a brochure sharing the hopes that we have for our sanctuary. Our campaign committee will seek the major gifts that will enable this renovation to happen, plan a kick-off dinner for the beginning of the congregational phase, and develop a plan to visit all of our families and friends in seeking financial pledges for the renewal of our worship space. Church members have already said yes to being on these leadership teams. Now we are asking our congregation to pray for them as they continue to prepare the ground for final architectural renderings and for the campaign to raise the money. Please be praying for this important and historic work to improve our sanctuary

2 for decades to come. Please be praying about how you will help it happen. Please be praying about what you can give to make this dream a reality. If you would like to visit with a pastor or a member of the campaign committee about providing a major gift, we would love to come to you! Please excuse me if I sound as though I am taking this sanctuary renovation personally. This effort is the last major capital project that will be attempted while I serve this congregation. I would love for it to be accomplished well. Mary Ann and I intend to give significantly to it. We would love for you to join us with a generous outpouring of love for St. Simons Presbyterian Church and for the God who has called us to ministry in Jesus Christ. Let s pray all the way! Alan Dyer Musical Notes The Chancel Choir is enjoying welcoming you to worship with an introit. One of these days, we will invite you to join us. In any case, the hymn is usually listed in the bulletin. Follow along as we sing. That goes for the hymns and other service music during worship. Read the words ahead of time and you will realize how the theme of the day is enhanced by music. Then, Sing! On Sunday, our opening hymn will be a familiar one O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing (610). The hymn of dedication tune is familiar, but the words are different. The tune is FESTAL SONG, which is the familiar Rise Up, O Men of God hymn. Here are the words for practicing ahead and for your inspiration and comfort: Give to the winds thy fears; hope, and be undismayed. God hears thy sighs and counts thy tears; God shall lift up thy head. Through waves and clouds and storms God gently clears the way. Wait patiently; so shall this night soon end in joyous day. Ubi Caritas is the first of four motets on a Gregorian chant theme for a cappella choir. The piece is in Latin, so here is the

9 translation that will be provided in Sunday s bulletin as well: Where charity and love are, God is there. Christ's love has gathered us into one. Let us rejoice and be pleased in Him. Let us fear, and let us love the living God. And may we love each other with a sincere heart. Where charity and love are, God is there. Amen.
