ACT I Scene 1: The Gifts of M. D Artagnan the Elder In black. MOTHER: D Artagnan!!! Lights and farmyard sounds fade up as Mother enters. Stage is bare except for a huge mound of hay USC. MOTHER: D Artagnan! D Artagnan!! (a Farm Hand enters) Where is that boy?! (Farm Hand shakes head) Oooooo! (she gestures him off another direction) D Artagnan! (she exits, calling) D Artagnannnnnn!!!! Pause. From the hay pile a young man s head suddenly appears, young, blond, handsome. Looks about. Was he asleep? After a beat, a second head appears, female, young, beautiful, breathless. She looks at the young man, exultant. They smile, she impishly, he devilishly, and kiss. MOTHER (off): D Artagnan!!! The young man reacts, breaks the kiss, and emerges from the hay pile, drawing his companion with him. They are both in disarray. MOTHER (off): D Artagnannn! Hurriedly now, the lovers adjust their clothing. D Artagnan searches the hay for his shirt and satchel, buttoning up his trousers, etc. The lovers share one last kiss as the Farm Maid reluctantly backs away and D Artagnan pulls on his boots. She giggles, turns and encounters The Farm Hand. He sees her, reacts (husband and wife? Father and daughter?) and shoots D Artagnan a look. D Artagnan grins sheepishly. Farm Hand begins to roll up

his sleeves and move towards D Artagnan, violence on his mind as MOTHER (entering, seeing him, crossing towards him): D Artagnan! Seeing Mother, the Farm Hand breaks off and drags Farm Maid off by the hand, she still giggling and casting lascivious fond glances back to D Artagnan as Farm Hand admonishes her sotto vocce as they exit. MOTHER (cont d): D Artagnan! At last! THERE you are! Here he is, Henri! God s britches, boy, what have you been up to? (NOT referring to the Farm Maid. She is oblivious to that situation). Father enters with a knowing look. Stands apart watching and silent. MOTHER (cont d): Your poor Father and I have been looking everywhere for you. You were supposed to be on your way hours ago! D ARTAGNAN: Sorry Mother. MOTHER: Well, there is no matter for it now. You ll just have to stay the night on the road. I can t bear to say goodbye to my darling boy a second time. Honestly, one would think you liked to break your poor Mother s heart! D ARTAGNAN: Sorry, Mother. MOTHER: O, pooh! You men are all the same. I was always worrying after your Father before he settled down to the country life. Adventures! Intrigues! Nonsense! After you make your Fortune, you settle down and find a nice girl and have a quiet life, do you hear? Don t break your poor Mother s heart. D ARTAGNAN: Yes, Mother. MOTHER: Yes, Mother. Bah! (taking him in) So much like your Father. (and to her, he is. She begins to tear up and cry, her little boy is leaving home). O! O! O!!! (trying to pull herself together) Well, no matter for it now! Your father has a few words for you before you go. Goodbye, dear. (crushes him to her) Be careful! Write to us often! (she

loses it again as she exits, weeping and wailing) Don t break your poor Mother s heart! Ohhhh! D ARTAGNAN (turning back to his father): Father- FATHER: (reassuring) She ll be fine. It is a mother s prerogative to cry when her chicks leave the nest. My son, it is now time for you to depart. You must put your mind to other matters. You journey to Paris and your Fortune! D ARTAGNAN: Yes, Father! FATHER: But before you go, I have some things for you to ease you on your way. First, this purse of fifteen crowns. D ARTAGNAN: Sir!- FATHER: Tush! I have saved it for just this purpose. Our needs here are simple, it won t be missed. D ARTAGNAN: Thank-you, Sir. FATHER: But don t tell your Mother. Second, this ointment. The recipe was given to your Mother by an old gypsy woman many years ago. It will heal almost any wound but those of the heart. You may be grateful for it, it has saved my life on more than one occasion. D ARTAGNAN (perhaps smelling it, it is awful and rank) But, Father, isn t this the salve we use on the horses? FATHER (giving him a smiling look, then changing the subject): Third, I have written you a letter of introduction to M. de Treville. We fought together in the wars. He is my very good friend, and a Gascon like ourselves. He is also the Captain of the King s Musketeers! His bravery and reputation are second to none. He is one of the most influential men in Paris, preceded only by the Cardinal and the King himself. But for all of his success, he has not forgotten his humble beginnings, nor the brave hearts that beat within Gascon breasts. Let him guide you in all things and follow any advice he

may offer as if it were my own. If you do, your Fortunes are assured! D ARTAGNAN: Yes, Father. Father: And with the letter, my sword. D ARTAGNAN: No, Sir! I cannot- FATHER: Mind your father, boy. I have taught you the use of it, and your young limbs are a better master for it than these old arms will ever be again. Take it, and let it live in your good service rather than rust in mine. D ARTAGNAN (accepting it. He is deeply moved by the moment): Thank-you, Father. FATHER: I regret I can not send you off with more, but I do have one last gift to bestow, perhaps more precious than all. My son, Charlemagne is yours. (A horse whinnies offstage) D ARTAGNAN (clearly not moved by this gift): But Father, Charlemagne is- (whinny, interrupts) D ARTAGNAN (cont d, not knowing quite how to break it to him): -Father Charlemagne is- (whinny, interrupts) D ARTAGNAN (cont d):-father, Char-(shooting a glace off, then thinking better of saying the name a third time) well, he is FATHER (hushing him and finishing D Artagnan s sentence): He is a noble beast. He carried me through two wars and has been my faithful servant these many years. Like your Father, his age may be great, but so is his heart. No man of means enters Paris unmounted, and my son will be no exception. He is like a member of the family and will serve you as a true and loyal friend. And we D Artagnan s honour our debts of service.

Keep him always and let make a noble end. (Referencing the line of Mother s, with a smile) Don t break your poor Father s heart. D ARTAGNAN (not thrilled): Yes, Father. FATHER: Paris is a dangerous place. Much different from our native Gascony. Obey M. de Treville in all things and offer him great respect. Above him, honour only the King and the Cardinal. Accept affront from no one but those three, and fight at the slightest provocation, and all the more quickly because dueling is forbidden! It will strike fear into your enemies and mark you as a man of courage for all to see. D ARTAGNAN: Yes, Father! FATHER: Remember, you are a Gason, a D Artagnan, and my son! I have no doubt my boy, if you follow my advice, and that great heart that pumps our noble blood, you will soon be a Musketeer! (embraces him tightly and kisses him on both cheeks). D ARTAGNAN (moved): Thank-you Father! (the first signs of homesickness and tears upon him) Father, I FATHER: No more, my boy! Your road to greatness lies before you! Be off, and the Blessings of God go with you. (exits before his emotions can show). D ARTAGNAN (calling after his Father): Yes, Father! Thank-you, Father! I m off! And soon, I will return to you a great Musketeer! D Artagnan turns, head held high, striding boldly off face to the glorious future ahead of him, only to be greeted with A whinny. He deflates, and begins to walk off as Lights crossfade to Scene 2
