MONDAY SESSION 1 - Assembly Workshop Schedule 116 Practical Ways to Empower Parents According to Barna research, Parents believe that they are primarily responsible for the spiritual development of their children, but few parents spend time during a typical week interacting with their children on spiritual matters. What tools can you give to parents to help them disciple their kids? J. James 117 Women Pastors: Let's Talk! This workshop is an opportunity for women pastors to meet, discuss their role within their church, and help answer questions unique to this segment of ministry leaders. It promises to be a time of encouragement, empowerment, and envisioning anew how God desires to use you in His Kingdom work. Patricia Crane 118 Strengthsfinder and Member Engagement: Next-Level Discipleship Gallup research says that members who know their strengths and strongly agree that they have the opportunity to do what they do best in their congregation are more than 2.5 times as likely as the average member to be engaged (76% to 29%) and 38 times as likely to be engaged as they are to be actively disengaged (75% to 2%). This workshop will offer practical ways to implement this innovative discipleship strategy in your church. Fred Fullerton Repeats at 3: The Dead Sea Scrolls and Contemporary Biblical Issues We will take a brief look at the greatest and most fascinating archaeological discovery of the 20 th century: the ancient Bible scrolls found in the Judean Desert. With these discoveries, we can now see the Bible text as it was 1,000 years earlier than any previously known manuscripts. They give us a much clearer view of the Bible that was read by Jesus and the Early Church. We will see how these texts speak poignantly to the important issues that we face today: inerrancy, infallibility, authority, inspiration, canonization, translation, and interpretation of the Word of God. Randy Bynum 203 The Facts and Facets of Human Trafficking Come learn about modern slavery, also known as human trafficking. Become aware of the facts of one of the world's most rapidly growing-- albeit illegal--industries, the sale of another human being for profit: children in third world countries being trained to kill with AK-47's, sweat shops with indentured child slaves or the flourishing child sex tourism industry in Asia, not to mention the 300,000 to 800,000 juvenile girls being bought and sold in the U.S. today. Learn what is being done by churches in the WaPac District and how you can become a modern abolitionist. Leah Wheeler (moderator), Lindsey DuBois, and Charmaine Sanders
MONDAY SESSION 1 - Assembly Workshop Schedule 316 Can You Hear Me Now? We will be discussing the basic acoustic principles with respect to how they relate to installation and operation of church sound systems. Regan Coordes Local NMI Presidents Appreciation Coffee This workshop is offered only once. Local Mission Presidents, this workshop is for you! Receive all the mission resources you need for a successful year and enjoy coffee, tea, and a full array of treats! You will have the opportunity to hear from our missionaries in a more intimate setting, be able to order your Nazarene Publishing House materials, schedule missionaries, network and receive dozens of actual hands-on promotional and service ideas. This is a special time for you! Please join us! District NMI Leadership Team Repeats at 3: Thinking Strategically in the Small and Medium-Sized Church Rather than being stuck in the status quo, chasing after programs that seem to be working in other places, or complaining about the lack of resources, small and medium-sized churches that desire to be faithful to God s mission in their local and global community can benefit from thinking realistically about their mission, values, and opportunities by developing a simple, sustainable strategic plan that works for their unique context. This seminar will introduce congregation leaders (clergy and lay) to an effective strategic planning process. Ed Robinson 417 Loving the Heart and Mind of a Teenager If you know a teenager, this workshop is for you. So many times we try to reach and minister to teens with the newest programs, activities, and media. Although these tools are good and helpful, let s take a closer look at the core needs and issues of teenagers so we can teach them to not just know about God, but to really know, love, and serve Him. Steve Schroeder Reaching to the Ends of the Earth! Inter-generational Ministry and Outreach There is real power in inter-generational relationships. This workshop will address ways of communicating and ministering together across generational lines in projects and outreach, for example, junior high students and PrimeTimers working together in outreach on Operation Christmas Child. We will discuss and share ideas concerning how to engage seniors in meaningful relationships with the teen generation that will impact them the rest of their lives. Jan Apps
Repeats at 3:00 Repeat: MONDAY SESSION 1 - Assembly Workshop Schedule Reading with Your Lips Moving: Lessons for Reading Scripture in Worship This workshop explores the importance of reading the Bible in the context of Christian worship and offers some helpful tips on recruiting and training others to strengthen this ministry in your local church. MONDAY SESSION 2 - Assembly Workshop Schedule Jay Akkerman 116 Do You Feel Alone in Children's Ministry? If you are children s ministry worker, join us for a discussion on how we can become a resource for each other on the WaPac District. We will discuss how networking relationally and in ministering can strengthen our local ministries and our district as a whole. James Matthews 117 Witnessing: Re-envisioning God This workshop will inspire church goers to become witnesses for Jesus Christ by empowering them to reflect God in their community. It will dispel stereotypes about witnessing to others and identify the Biblical imperative to represent Christ through our lives and actions. We will learn what it means to witness to others in Christ-like ways, emphasizing our dependence on the Holy Spirit as we show God to the world. Lyle Pointer 118 Running the Race and Finishing Strong Leading ministry in the local church can be challenging and draining. Because of this, leaders must consider what practices and attitudes can empower them to live for God and serve the church faithfully. Our discussion will blend management principles with spiritual formation disciplines to give the leader practical tools to help run the spiritual leadership race and finish strong. Chuck Judd
Repeat of 1:30 Session MONDAY SESSION 2 - Assembly Workshop Schedule 119 The Dead Sea Scrolls and Contemporary Biblical Issues 203 I Was a Stranger and You Welcomed Me In We will take a brief look at the greatest and most fascinating archaeological discovery of the 20 th century: the ancient Bible scrolls found in the Judean Desert. With the increased number of immigrants and refugees coming to the U.S., our churches encounter this population group more than ever before. In this workshop, we will discover how Christians can provide practical responses to this issue from a Biblical perspective. Randy Bynum Gary Ip and Robby Skinner 316 Taking the Gospel to Work: How Your Local Church Can Equip Disciples to Flourish in the Workplace Vocational purpose is a goal for every disciple. In this workshop, learn how your local church can help disciples find their vocational purpose and prepare them to flourish in their domain of work life. Awaken your local church to its potential in fulfilling God's mission through work. Come gain practical tools to encourage people to understand their call to their work world. James Holston and Tom Shaw 412 Brazil Work and Witness Team Meeting Interested in being a part of the District Work and Witness trip to Brazil in September 2015? This informational meeting will be the first official team meeting. Join us as we discover what God wants to do in your life through a W&W trip to Brazil. Rene Hayes and Debra Voelker Repeat of 1:30 Session 416 Thinking Strategically in the Small and Medium-Sized Church Rather than being stuck in the status quo, chasing after programs that seem to be working in other places, or complaining about the lack of resources, small and medium-sized churches that desire to be faithful to God s mission in their local and global community can benefit from thinking realistically about their mission, values, and opportunities by developing a simple, sustainable strategic plan that works for their unique context. This seminar will introduce congregation leaders (clergy and lay) to an effective strategic planning process. Ed Robinson
MONDAY SESSION 2 - Assembly Workshop Schedule 414 Creative Community Connections We are looking for suggestions on how to make the hands and feet of Jesus a reality in our local communities. This ministry roundtable will involve pastors from various-sized churches sharing about how their congregations are making a spiritual impact in their communities by serving those around them. Mike Ford, Dennis Spinnie, and Deb Weisen 417 Equipping Your Church to Minister to Youth Every church can have a thriving youth ministry. Sometimes you just need some practical steps to take and a different way to think about ministering to youth. In this workshop, we will discuss how to think theologically about youth ministry and what is essential to be effective in leading teens to follow Christ. Come to be encouraged and inspired to motivate everyone in your church (not only the youth workers) to see themselves as key players in the discipleship of teenagers. Eric McConnaughey Reaching to the Ends of the Earth! Learn how you can be personally involved in this dynamic ministry that is bringing the Gospel of Jesus Christ to thousands of people each day and the eternal impact the JESUS Film Ministry has produced for the global Church of the Nazarene. You will get to see the 50-pound video projection backpack system and hear how this technology enables our field teams to present the JESUS Film in remote villages beyond roads. Darrell Leber Repeat of 1:30 session Reading with Your Lips Moving: Lessons for Reading Scripture in Worship This workshop explores the importance of reading the Bible in the context of Christian worship and offers some helpful tips on recruiting and training others to strengthen this ministry in your local church. Jay Akkerman
, Noon to 1:30 TUESDAY Special Lunch Sessions - Assembly Workshop Schedule More than Counting Heads: The Role of the Local SDMI Chairperson You may not realize it, but the role of the local church SDMI chairperson is one of the most important ministry roles in the local congregation for its focus is the spiritual development of the congregation. This workshop will discuss the role of the local SDMI Chairperson as a partner with the pastor in creating a disciple-making plan in the local church and give direction to various resources that can help in the process. Tony Johnson Continues 1:30 to 2:30, Noon to 2: Renovating Women's Ministries: Knocking Down Walls and Building Bridges! LUNCH: Women s ministry on WaPac is seeing a new day of collaborating, equipping, and growing together. At this workshop, you ll meet the new WoW council members, hear about the exciting ministry gatherings that are coming in the near future, and gain some new insights concerning how to develop a healthy women s ministry in your local congregation. Women of WaPac Ministry Council, facilitated by Rhonda Tustin Repeat: TUESDAY SESSION 1 - Assembly Workshop Schedule 116 Creating an Atmosphere of Worship We know the idea of developing a well-balanced worship experience for your congregation can be a little intimidating. Our challenge is to create a spiritually empowering worship experience that touches people s lives. We will discuss the important aspects of a worship service so you can create a blended music service to better satisfy both young and old alike, no matter your church s talent or technical assets. Russell Leonce 117 The Four Questions of Followership Leadership is important. No question. Answers are important. Again, no question. However, in the past decade of ministry it seems like I have been led back to biblical story lines where crucial moments were best illustrated not by the answers discovered, but by the questions that leaders asked, and their ability to follow. In this workshop, we will wrestle with those questions and how they apply to our roles in leadership. Ev Tustin
TUESDAY SESSION 1 - Assembly Workshop Schedule 118 New Churches Reach New People The formation of new churches is one of the best methods for evangelism. Come explore how individuals of all skill levels and churches of all sizes can be involved in a variety of ways to partner with the effort to plant new churches in new places to reach new people for Jesus. Brandon Marten 119 Uniquely You Stop trying to be something you're not. Discover how uniquely you've been created by God for a special purpose. We'll look at personalities, love languages, and strengths as ways to understand how special you really are. Once you understand these things, you'll be more open to understanding what God has for you. Then you can join Him in ministry with passion and confidence. Debe Loeber 203 Special Attention to Special Needs If we told you that there was a group in your local community that was about 90% unchurched what would you say? Are there really people in your community or ministry contexts that are unintentionally overlooked? Could God be calling you to reach out to this overlooked group? What does an inclusive church really look like? In this workshop, we will discuss some of the challenges and opportunities that exist in reaching out to families and individuals with special needs. Join us for an informative workshop and panel discussion. Asha Fuller, Karen Humber, and John Witmer 316 The Idea Exchange What if there was a way we could connect with other pastors from across the nation to ask questions, share ideas, and find resources more than just once a year. A way to develop a system for sharing ideas for outreach, assimilation, and discipleship that could be helpful no matter one s setting or environment. We are hoping that, together, we can create such a place with like-minded pastors from churches of all sizes. Join us for this workshop and help us to figure out the best way to do that. Brian Thomas and Jimmy Skeen Continuing from Lunch Session Renovating Women's Ministries: Knocking Down Walls and Building Bridges! Continuing from Lunch Session: Women s ministry on WaPac is seeing a new day of collaborating, equipping, and growing together. At this workshop, you ll meet the new WoW council members, hear about the exciting ministry gatherings that are coming in the near future, and gain some new insights concerning how to develop a healthy women s ministry in your local congregation. Women of WaPac Ministry Council, facilitated by Rhonda Tustin
TUESDAY SESSION 1 - Assembly Workshop Schedule 416 Organizing Ourselves for the Next "Oso" In light of the natural disaster at Oso a year ago, our district desires to create a plan of action for how we will respond in such situations in the future. In this town meeting style gathering, we will wrestle with a few how questions: How do we prepare a church to respond in a local emergency or disaster? How can we come alongside churches in need? How can we develop a functioning database for response rapid or not? Jerry Kester, Jon Scott Nazarene Identity: Past, Present, and Future Drawing on a recent panel conversation from Grace & Peace Magazine (Issue 10), we will delve into issues of Nazarene Identity past, present, and future, especially as related to current culture. This brief workshop will help empower WaPac pastors and leaders in their efforts to create Christ-like disciples in their congregations and communities. Rusty Brian Making Ministry Happen with Your Church Website The goal of this class is to help churches create a website that works for ministry. This class shows you how to go beyond just an online brochure to a website that facilitates and enhances ministry. This class is for pastors, church administrators, and anyone on the website team. It is not a technical class; we will not be discussing any kind of programming techniques but will focus on content. Jerry Luengen
