B10-page 1 SEGMENT B10: COSMOPOLITAN ACHIEVERS Mission Impact Focusing your heartburst for the people around you 2012 Mission Impact Guide Affluent, middle-aged and established couples and families enjoying dynamic lifestyles in metro areas General Spiritual Insight: Resource: Mosaic by Experian Cosmopolitan Achievers is part of the Lifestyle Group B (Flourishing Families). Please refer to the description of Group B for the larger context of this segment's potential relationship with the church. Religious Perspective: "An Important Part of a Healthy Lifestyle" Key Behaviors: Keenly Aware of Life Cycles; High Expectations For Relevant Programs Strong Impressions: Inclination & Attitudes: Very Sociable, Indulgent Mood & Values: High Devotion to Family, High Sense of Well Being
B10-page 2 Comments: Religion is associated with heritage and tradition. If they are Christians, then the church is important to respect as an institution even though they may not attend very often. People in this lifestyle segment are content with accepted faith and practice, and not particularly philosophically adventurous. They are focused on health and wealth, interested in travel and other cultures, and lead sophisticated lifestyles. Aesthetics and spirituality are closely related. They respect the perspectives of other faiths and cultures, and are not especially mission-minded. They will participate in churches that are generally broad-minded and non-dogmatic, but will expect the church to respect their heritage. Even though they speak English fluently, a bi-lingual church has far more credibility.
B10-page 3 Relevant Ministry Choices: Leadership Hospitality Visionary, Pilgrim If people in this lifestyle segment participate regularly in a church, it will often have more to do with the pastor than the programs. They look for a leader who has a big, inclusive, and non-judgemental vision that is internationally and culturally sensitive. This is a pastor (often male) who has traveled widely and experienced diverse cultures. His or her education often emphasized world religions rather than systematic theology, although is usually grounded in classic Christian faith (Catholic or Protestant). More importantly, the pastor networks effectively among non-profit and political organizations, and leads a church with strong signature outreach ministries. The pastor will epitomize the openness and optimism, prudence and respect that are core values for this lifestyle segment. Healthy Choices If people in this segment drive to church, they are usually riding in luxury, imported, vehicles. Parking should be convenient and secure... with spaces wide enough to avoid nicks and scratches. They will not use valet parking offered by the youth group. Greeters should be well trained and respectful, sensitive to cultural mores and perhaps bi-lingual. Hospitality is both an expectation and an art form for people in this segment. Environments should be tasteful and well decorated, with fresh air and natural light. Ambient music that combines soft music and sounds of nature may be welcome, and encourage an atmosphere of quiet respect and mature conversation. Children should have a separate serving station that is supervised. Refreshments are fresh and healthy (fruits, vegetables, juices, teas, etc.) and reflect multi-cultural tastes. Leadership Although people in this segment expect the pastor to be approachable and capable of mentoring young adults and seekers, the pastor need not be a constant visitor and should be cautious about being too intrusive on the lives of these couples and families. Hospitality The pastor and other staff should make a point of mingling during the hospitality time. People see this time as more than an opportunity for fellowship and catching up with friends. It is a time to network, meet people, and talk substantively about social, religious, or political concerns.
B10-page 4 Relevant Ministry Choices: Worship Education Inspirational - Mission Connectional People in this lifestyle segment gravitate to worship that is "traditional" to the church tradition and indigenous culture of their parents... but with the quality and clarity they have come to expect in the best of North American culture. Eucharist and other sacraments will follow traditional structures, but the ceremony will be supplemented by sophisticated, contemporary sounds, sights, and symbols. Worship leaders tend to be professional experts, rather than amateurs. Most people in this segment are well educated, and expect preaching to be instructive. However, the main point of worship is not to learn, but to be inspired to live optimistically. Worship should consistently respond to global (not local) events, and connect worshippers with the mission work of the congregation. Celebrating social service volunteers, commissioning mission teams, and praying for important mission projects are emphasized in worship (rather than personal prayers of intercession, organizational announcements, or evangelical witness). Curricular, Topical, Generational or Peer Group Adults in this lifestyle segment are evenly mixed between families and childless couples. They tend to have traditional expectations of more structured and generational education for children... but teens, young adults, and older adults gather in peer groups. Men and women may often gather separately, although couples who share affinities in occupation or education mingle easily. People in this segment tend to rely on traditional print media to guide discussion (books and curricula), but easily go on line to do additional research on specific topics. Educational environments tend to be comfortable and wireless. The Bible is usually one important resource among many spiritual and ethical resources, but is not exclusively authoritative. Worship Worship tends to be very presentational. Dialogue will come later during refreshments, or through and private conversations. Education Video and internet enhances Christian education. Such media allows access to experts from other sectors (social service, political, educational, etc.) However, direct dialogue through social media and digital webcams may be too spontaneous.
B10-page B10-page 5 3 Relevant Ministry Choices: Small Group Outreach Designated Leaders, Curriculum Midweek small groups may be less attractive to people in this segment, especially if they are mainly about fellowship or interpersonal relationships. They need to be more focused on a topic of interest (often related to the arts, social issues, travel, environmental crises, or global concerns). These people tend to be workaholics. If they take time for a small group, it needs to be clearly relevant to their careers and special interests. They travel a great deal and avoid long term groups. The most interesting small groups will be very short term (1-3 sessions), and be led by an expert on the topic. Group leaders should also be comfortable with facilitating conversation. They should respect silence and not push for a response; but they should also expect wellinformed criticism and be prepared for serious discussion. For Themselves: Human Potential, Health For Others: Survival, Quality of Life Philanthropy is important in this lifestyle segment. They are primarily interested in education, arts, health care, and the environment and give generously to universities, hospitals, global initiatives, and public broadcasting. They will connect with outreach ministries that help them realize their personal potential, or which help them achieve holistically healthy and physically fit; and which help them understand and use homeopathic health remedies. They have a wide ranging, international perspective, and tend to think globally about outreach. They are more likely to give time and energy to confront manmade or natural disasters, than support a local food bank. Their empathy is for people at the edge of survival, or for people who are challenged to improve their quality of life. They support outreach ministries that stop the spread of disease, provide food in the midst of famine, promote peace and understanding among nations and races, etc. They usually see education and well organized social agencies as the best leverage points for change. Small Group Small groups are more likely to be a vehicle for edification, and provide a window on the world. They help people understand the anxieties and spiritual struggles of life, but are not often expected to provide rigorous peer group accountability for spiritual growth. Outreach People in this lifestyle segment are fiscally very cautious, and will want to be reassured of the financial management and ethical integrity of outreach organizations.
B10-page 6 Relevant Institutional Strategies: Communication Internet, Print, Gatherings The internet is important primarily as a vehicle for research. People in this lifestyle segment will follow links and browse websites to gather information, explore and book travel, do financial transactions and track investments, and explore websites related to health and global news. They occasionally shop on line. In order to go deep, however, people in this segment are more likely to consult with experts personally or seek the advice of friends. They read books and magazines, and watch some documentaries and educational television. They tend to use "smart phones", and screen their calls; but they are more likely to talk than text. Communication Whether at home or traveling, being in communication is important. They will use the latest technologies, and search out wireless environments, in order to keep in touch.
