1 6 th Commandment Unbroken Love Memory Work: Learn the books of the New Testament from Matthew 2 Thessalonians Teaching Time The sixth commandment: Do not commit ADULTERY. What does this mean? (see Catechism topic The Sixth Commandment on page 81) We should fear and love God so that we lead a SEXUALLY pure and holy life in all that we say, see, and do. GOD came up with sex. Therefore, sex is GOOD. Why did God make us sexual? REFLECTION = we are created to reflect his image (Genesis 1:26-27) PROCREATION = To be fruitful and multiply. (Genesis 1:28-31) CONNECTION = To become one flesh. (Genesis 2:24-25) RECREATION = As a wedding gift. (Song of Songs 1:2) What does God desire for our sexuality? God s plan is sex is for one man and one woman together for life. Wrong Question: How far is too far? Right Question: How can I be a steward of this gift of sexuality? Which is the worst sin? Pornography Pre-marital sex Homosexuality An Affair Talking back to your parents Sexual sins carry greater Consequences but not greater Condemnation. (1 Cor 6:18-19) How can I keep this commandment? FLEE temptation! (1 Corinthians 6:18) GUARD your heart! (Philippians 4:6-9) PROTECT your brothers and sisters (1 Timothy 5:1-2) As much as possible, do not cause another to STUMBLE. (Romans 14:13) Main Point: Honor God with your HEART and BODY.

Experiential Activity Pass out the cards that are provided at your table. Start with the person to your right. Each one has an instruction for what they are to do with the fruit that is also provided. After each person follows their instruction they should pass the fruit to the person to the right of them. When everyone has had a turn, return the fruit to the leader and ask the application questions. Example of what the cards read: roll the fruit around in your hand and press slightly as you count to 10 juggle the fruit from hand to hand six times drop the fruit on the table write your initials in the fruit with your fingernail spin the fruit on the table as fast as you can Application 1. Would you want to give this fruit to someone you really cared about? 2. How is this abused fruit like sexuality? 3. God created our sexuality as something beautiful. Recall as a group the 3 purposes of sex from the lesson. Which do you think is most important? (there is no one correct answer) 4. God gives us the gift of sexuality to share with our future spouse. When we disobey God and pass His beautiful gift around (like the fruit) what happens? (answers could include: STDs, unexpected pregnancy, abortion, divorce, broken relationships) 5. Do you think it s possible to remain sexually pure until you re married? Why or why not? Do you think it s easier or harder than it was 50 years ago? 6. Do you think someone can be forgiven of their sexual sins? Read 1 John 1:9. 7. In the Bible after Jesus had gone back up to heaven, some churches believed that they could do anything they wanted when it came to sex because they had freedom and forgiveness in Jesus. What does Paul say about that in 1 Corinthians 6:12? What do you think that means? Why would it not be beneficial? 8. Continue reading 1 Corinthians 6: What question is asked in verse 15 that is quite shocking? What does it say about us when we are united with the Lord? 9. Verse 18 says we should flee from sexual immorality. What are some practical ways you can come up with to help our group flee when it comes to sexual temptations? 10. Close in prayer as a group, praying for the Spirit to keep you strong and from sexual temptation.

4 Family Time Family Time is meant to be an opportunity to get the family talking about spiritual things. Multiple studies show that parents and grandparents are the #1 faith role models in a child s life. We know life is busy, but we want to give you opportunities to grow together. A great time to do this is in the car, while eating a meal, or simply anytime you can enjoy together. 1. Have your parents look up in Luther s Small Catechism the four ways that we are to lead a sexually pure and holy life (question 55 on page 81) and write them down as they share them with you. a) b) c) d) (continued on back)

5 3. Parents, is there any advice you would want to add to this? 4. Read Titus 2: Discuss how is it possible to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives? 5. Close your time by having your parent(s) pray over you for strength to flee from the many sexual temptations that are constantly around, and for God to continue to prepare your future spouse He has for you. For Further Study (an optional section for families that want to go deeper) Love is often very misunderstood. Many think love is simply an emotion. When you say you are in love that may be a feeling but is it true love? What do you think makes for true love? Read 1 Corinthians 13:4-8. This passage is often read at weddings. Do these sound more like feelings or actions? What are some of the qualities of love that are listed? Take each quality one by one and talk about them.
