What are the strengths and weaknesses of both tendencies? 2. What would you say to the person who responds to this study by saying, I think we have to be really careful here. I just don t think we should be judging each other and throwing stones at one another 3. What are some different ways you can speak the truth to someone? What will it mean to speak the truth in love? 18 A fellowship that has trouble, prayer, happiness, singing, sickness, more prayer, confession of sin and more prayer. All of this is what keeps the fellowship real, and the confession of sin is what takes us to greater depths

20 Question: According to the scripture, who is a righteous person?

21 He who conceals his transgressions (sin) will not prosper, But he who confesses and forsakes them will find compassion. - Proverbs 28:13

22 God, have mercy on me, a sinner. I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted. - Jesus; Luke 18:13-14

23 TWO SIDES OF THE SAME COIN

24 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from sin. If we claim to be all[b] without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will 9 forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we 10 make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us. - John; 1 John 1:7-10

25 Walking in the light and confessing sins mean the same thing, they both lead to the same result - being made righteous.

27 4 IMPORTANT LESSONS Sin is still a reality - even as a Disciple Christ has freed us to be real We should not be shocked or disillusioned when someone confesses The sooner we walk in the light, the better

28 QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER

29 Question: What if repentance is not in a persons heart?

30 UNREPENTANT HEART Confession is never from humility if it does not involve repentance. Confession is self-focused and not God-focused if it does not seek to please him Confession of sin must involve forsaking that sin (Proverbs 28:13)

31 Question: What is the power of confession?

32 POWER OF CONFESSION Confession is powerful because it brings the forgiveness of sin and purifies us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:7,9) It brings fellowship with God and one another (1 John 1:7-9) A strong stand against Satan (John 8:44, James 4:7) Confession is contagious

33 Question: Can confession in the family ever be turned in the wrong way so that harm is the result?

34 MISUSE OF CONFESSION Any biblical subject can be misused If we react with condemnation If we gossip and do not keep confidence If we use it to label people or to control people If we think it is our role to fix them If leaders do not do it, but expect others to do it

35 Question: Is confession risky?

36 Yes. Just as many things we are called to be as disciples is risky. This life of following Jesus is the righteous road, not the safe road (Matthew 5:10)

37 Question: Is confession a painful thing or a Joyful thing?

40 HOW TO GROW IN CONFESSION Be open at a temptation level! We will get used to talking at that level We will nip many things in the bud before they ever progress to sin Overcorrecting attitude Ask your roommate, Spiritual friend Do you find me to be a confessing person? Would I be someone you would feel good about confessing to? - Discuss your responses

41 DISCUSSION QUESTIONS 1. What have been your experiences of confessing your sins? 2. If there have been sinful responses, how do you need to process those? 3. How have you handled the confession of others? In what ways do you need to respond more righteously and helpfully? 4. How would you categorize yourself: 1. Seldom confess sin 2. Confess only when there is big sin 3. Consistently confess sin 4. Open even about temptations 5. Why do you think you are the way you are? Are there changes you want to make? 6. How does confession fit with the way of the cross?
