1 Life Beneath the Cross Volume XII, Issue 3 May/June, 2017 Of Greater Value Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Yet, it s April 27 as I pound out this newsletter article. The pundits are predicting snowy precipitation for this weekend. UGH!!! This might be the end of my daffodils and tulips. Double UGH!!! F lowers are important to us, evidenced by the floor space they consume in our favorite grocery store. Whether we give and receive flowers on May Day or Mother s Day, they have a way of lifting our spirits. Even seeing these flowers at the grocery store can cheer us as we prepare to go to war with our fellow shoppers. esus goes so far as to tell us that the lilies of the field, symbolic J of all flowers, are more beautiful than Solomon in his glorious garb. If you ve ever hiked Black Powder Pass outside of Breckenridge in July, you know what I m talking about. No structure created by human hands compares to these flowers. et, Jesus goes on to say: Y B ut if God so clothes the grass, which is alive in the field today, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you, O you of little faith! Luke 12:28 A s you watch the flowers fill creation with their pleasing petals, may these flowers remind you that God cares deeply for you. You have greater worth than thousands of pansies, petunias and poppies. It is for you that Christ died. And it is for you that he lives. Pastor Doug

2 Worship Ministries by Pastor Jeffrey Meinz, Director of Worship Ministries Given and Shed for You... ince being at Holy Cross S Lutheran Church for almost 12 years, I ve heard from a variety of different people that It s impossible to do communion at all three services. Fine. No problem. I never really pursued it. It didn t affect me that much anyway. Or so I thought. hen I went to Seminary. I T had a full 10-week class on The Lord s Supper. During that class my professor, and the Holy Spirit, repeatedly revealed to me how important Communion is and what a benefit it is to God s people. Now that I ve served in the role of Director of Worship Ministry for a full year, the question regarding communion every service, every Sunday is still running through my mind regularly. hould we? Can we? Is it S logistically possible? Is there enough time? Are there enough funds in the budget? Can we consistently find enough volunteers to serve Communion? These are all valid questions, worthy of discussion and research. any of you remember M Palm Sunday on April 9. We offered First Communion to 26 fifth graders. We needed to distribute Communion at all three services. It went fine. No problems. I considered offering Communion on Easter Sunday at all four worship services. That would be impossible, right? We d never be able to distribute The Lord s Supper to almost 1,400 people while singing the hymns, reading the Scriptures, confessing our sins, hearing the words of forgiveness, and preaching a sermon. Impossible. Yet, it happened! Holy Cross Lutheran Church offered Communion at all four worship services and Easter Sunday was a wonderful celebration! ou might be wondering what Y a person receives or benefits when they receive Communion. The Small Catechism says, These words, Given and shed for you for the forgiveness of sins, show us that in the Sacrament forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation are given us through these words. For where there is forgiveness of sins, there is also life and salvation. Forgiveness. Life. Salvation. All good things that I desire and need more of daily in my life! cripture never speaks to how S often Communion should be distributed. Holy Cross isn t sinning when we distribute Communion every other Sunday. But I m still asking the question, Is it beneficial of offer Communion every service, every Sunday? In fact, 500 years ago, during the time of the Reformation, The Lord s Supper was the center of the worship service and everything else was built around the Sacrament of the Altar. Yes, Communion was offered every Sunday. Plus, Jesus encourages us to receive His Body and Blood often. or all of these reasons, while F I m still praying and seeking godly wisdom about this topic, I m going to begin scheduling Communion more often in worship. To begin, Holy Cross is going to celebrate Communion at all three services on festival Sunday s (Pentecost, Confirmation, Holy Trinity, All Saint s Day, etc.). Furthermore, instead of not offering Communion at any of the services on 5 th Sundays, we ll begin to offer Communion at all three of the services on 5 th Sundays. I know and believe in faith that God will deeply and abundantly bless us at Holy Cross Lutheran Church as we continue to faithfully receive His true Body and true Blood, forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation! Pastor Jeffrey Meinz We are really excited to offer Holy Communion more often. That means we need more people to help prepare and clean up the sacraments. If you can help, please contact Sue Umland. 2

3 Worship Ministries (Continued) Pastor Jeffrey Meinz, Director of Worship Ministries Music at Holy Cross Debbie Koster and Deb Schrank would like to start a Children s Tone Chime Choir here at Holy Cross. Children would need to read music. This group is geared towards older students up through high school. Woodwinds will also be starting up again this summer. Please contact Deb at hcls@holycrosscs.org if you are interested in playing in the woodwind ensemble or the children s tone chime choir. History of Hymns By Jess McDowell We continue our celebration of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation by looking at the hymns of Martin Luther. Luther s day. Luther improved on the stanza and added several of his own before publishing it in 1524 in the Erfurt Enchiridion. Come Holy Ghost, God and Lord LSB 497, LW 154, TLH 224 Text: German 15th century, Martin Luther, , published 1524 Tune: Eyn Enchiridion oder Handbuchlein, Erfur, 1524 Tune Title: Komm Heiliger Geist, Herre Gott, 15th century melody Text copyright 1941 Concordia Publishing House, Tune Public Domain; Luke 11:13, 1 Cor. 12:13, John 16:13-14, 2 Tim. 1:14, Acts 2:4 The translation is a composite and was prepared for The Lutheran Hymnal. It is based on Catherine Winkworth s Lyra Germanica, First Series, Catherine was born in London in Her early life was spent in the neighborhood of Manchester. She then moved with her family to Clifton, near Bristol. She died suddenly of heart disease at Monnetier in Savoy in This hymn of Martin Luther first appeared in Eyn Anchiridion oder Handbuchlein, Erfurt, 1524 entitled, Der Gesang Veni Sancte Spiritus, but in the Wittenberg Gesangbuch, 1531 the words, Improved by Dr. Mart. Luther were added to that title. As the title infers, the basis for this hymn is a medieval antiphon Veni Sancte Spiritus. The tune, Komm Heiliger Geist, Herre Gott, is found in two 15th century manuscripts now in the Munich library. It was an old German stanza that was a free metrical version of the antiphon in use in Winkworth translated many German works into English. Her work Lyra Germanica, First Series, 1855 contained the translations of 103 hymns from the Chevalier Bunsen s Gesung und Gebetbuch, The TLH contains about 75 of her translations from this and other works. She is the foremost in rank and popularity of modern translations from German to English. Her translations are the most widely used of any from that language. They have had more to do with the modern revival of the English use of German hymns than the versions of any other writers. 3 Food Pantry Statistics February Total Adults (18-59) Total Seniors Total Children Total Recipients Average # of families/day Pounds of food distributed Avg lbs distributed/day Average lbs per person , Food Donations Holy Cross members 695 Non-members 0 Schlotzsky s 97 Panera 137 Care & Share 2,767 Gold Wing Motorcycle Club 138 Less Spoilage/Donations elsewhere (40) Total Donations 3,794 Food Purchases Care & Share (4,168 lbs) King Soopers/Others (200) Sam s Club (116) Total food purchased Total lbs of food received $2, $2,810 8,278 The Bread of Life Food Pantry was open 11 days during February.

4 The Holy Spirit gives us the an s ommentary on ducation By DCE Dan Hampton Director of Growth Ministries BUILD ARM As we talked and discussed, Holy Cross Lutheran Church a simple theme or vision developed for how we see Growth Ministry encouraging those who hunger. Simply put, Growth Ministries seek to build a solid Biblical knowledge, to arm God s people for His ministry. seeks to encourage those who hunger to be nourished by God. Our ministries are currently aligned around this key mission. As a good Lutheran, I often ask the question, What does this mean? Hunger is all around us, people are hungry physically (which is why we purposefully offer a food pantry to the community), emotionally (which results in many of our care and counseling ministries), and spiritually. The desire of Holy Cross is to meet the needs of the people in the church and those of our community. Over the last several months the Growth Ministry Team, which includes myself, Nicki as our Children s Ministry Coordinator, Pam Pagel as our Growth Team Administrator, and Aurora Bostwick as our DCE Intern; have been wrestling with how we can encourage those who hunger to be nourished by God spiritually in our growth ministries. Growth Ministries at Holy Cross include everything associated with Christian Education in the church. Holy Cross Growth Ministries seek to build a solid Biblical foundation, to arm God s people for His ministry. What does this mean? The Bible is the foundation of our lives in Christ. It is the very Word of God. It is often easy to pull key passages or ideas from the Bible without digging into the narrative of Scripture. If His Word is truly going to be the foundation of our Christian lives, then we must have a SOLID understanding of what is contained throughout the entirety of His Word. Therefore, the first focus area of all Growth Ministries at Holy Cross is to bring about a SOLID BIBLICAL FOUNDATION for all participants. God s Word is powerful and we trust the Holy Spirit to work through the Word to change hearts and minds. 4 guidance and ability to live a life holy to God. Ephesians 4:11-12 says these are the gifts that Christ gave to the church: apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers. Their responsibility is to equip God s people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ. It is our desire that through any Growth Ministry event or activity, we aim to ARM you for ministry. It is the job of the church to train you and then send you out to boldly share the Gospel through the life you daily live. BIBLE STUDY SURVEY DCE Dan recently conducted a survey of our members. 6 Meet Our New DCE Intern I am pleased to announce that Bradley Asmus has been assigned to serve with us as our DCE Intern for the year. We are excited for the enthusiasm and passion he will bring to our ministry here at Holy Cross. I'd like to ask the congregation to welcome him by collecting some items to stock his pantry with. He is a lover of all food, and he does like to eat, so providing him with some groceries will go a long way to kick-start his time with us. Watch the bulletin for details. Recently I was able to chat with Bradley to learn a little more about him. His thoughts and answers are below: Where is home for you? Home for me is in Plymouth, Minnesota where I was born and raised all my life. Plymouth is a suburb of the Twin Cities and continues to grow. I would also argue that Camp Luther of North-east Wisconsin is my second home. It has a special place in my heart where I grew in my faith the past two summers. What do you like to do in your free time? Well, I love volleyball and being in the woods. I love to hike, play board games, swim, play cards, make puzzles, plunk around on the piano, absolutely love to sing, and be with people. Talking with people, or even just spending time getting to know people is so much fun and amazing! I enjoy watching movies, writing poems, playing Axis & Allies, and typing on my typewriter. Favorite movie/book? My favorite movies are A Beautiful Mind Dead Poet's Society Shawshank Redemption Patch Adams Good Will Hunting My favorite books are Bible Out Of the Night by Jan Valtin, A Walk to Remember by Nicholas Sparks Favorite food/restaurant? Perkins (variety), Chipotle (Mexican burritos), Peeking Garden (Chinese), and Origami (authentic Japanese) are some great restaurants. I love most foods, but nothing beats the following: Fish Fry, Jalapeño Poppers, Cherries, and fresh crisp grapes! What are you most looking forward to as you prepare to join us at Holy Cross? I am looking forward to a few things, and the main one is working in a church as an intern. I am so excited to work with youth, children, and families in a fashion that I (God willing) will be doing for a career. It will 6 be fantastic to immerse myself into doing things as a church worker would. Please keep Bradley in your prayers as he finishes his studies at Concordia St. Paul before joining us this summer. Interest Groups Lovely Ladies Coloring Party! Thursdays, 12:30 3 pm, Hiller Hall. I have learned so much during my time here. First, I now know about weather. If I wear a coat in the morning, I usually wish I had worn just a tee-shirt by the afternoon; however, if it don t bring a coat in the morning, it is a winter storm by the afternoon. Second, I learned that red lights mean nothing to the folks here in Colorado Springs, which is understandable because if you don t run it you will be stuck sitting at it forever. Third, sometimes its hard sharing an office with three other people, but I d gladly take it over sharing an office with Jeffrey. If I am hungry, Debbie Koster will find me and will feed me. Throwing things off the roof is frowned upon no matter what Jeffrey says. Tacos will always be a better choice than pizza for a crowd. It will always be stressful watching Dan walk through door ways. I ve never known a grown man with so many rubber duckies. Even at 2 am Marcy is probably in the office and definitely knows the answer. I also can now find Honduras on a map. Thank you, I love you all.
