When someone is lost, they forget or do not know where they should be going. When someone loses money, their health, or a loved one to death, everything from anger to despair to fear take over, and we are tempted to think there is no hope. That s why Jesus statement whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it sounds so strange, so backward. We lose our life by daily contrition and repentance as the old Adam is drowned. We find ourselves given the gift of eternal life as the new man daily arises, and we escape death forever! 6 EPISTLE: Romans 12:9-21 Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with God's people who are in need. Practice hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. Live in harmony with one another. 7 HOLY GOSPEL: Matthew 16:21-28 L: The Gospel according to St. Matthew, the sixteenth chapter C: Glory to You, O Lord. From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life. Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. "Never, Lord!" he said. "This shall never happen to you!" Jesus turned and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men." Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it. What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul? For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father's glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what he has done. 9 About Holy Communion The Lord s Supper is celebrated here in the belief and glad confidence that our Lord gives us as He says, not only bread and wine, but His very body and blood to eat and to drink for the forgiveness of sins and to strengthen our union with Him and with one another. Our Lord invites to His table those who trust His words, repent of all sin, and forgive and love as He forgives and loves us. If this is your belief, we welcome you to join us at the Lord s table. Because we are called to examine ourselves before receiving the Lord s Supper (I Corinthians 11:28-29), we encourage you to consider the questions on p in the front of the hymnal. If you are communing with us for the first time, or if you would like a fuller understanding of what we as Lutherans believe about the Lord s Supper, please pick up a copy of What is the Lord s Supper? at the Information table in the entryway. Please reserve the white grape juice cups in the center of the communion trays for those who for health reasons are unable to drink wine. 11 Sharing the Caring Christ with All People Matthew 16:21-28: Get behind Me, Satan. I m sure glad Jesus said that to Peter and not to me! Have you ever been a hindrance to the Gospel? Have your thoughts, words or deeds ever led someone away from Christ, rather than to Him? We all must repent of the times that our sinful lives have done the very thing that Peter did in today s Gospel lesson. We have mismatched the Person of Christ and the work of Christ. The work of the Cross is sacrifice. It s less of me and more of Christ. (John 3:30) Self is the enemy of developing as disciples. Thanks be to God, Jesus puts our sin behind Him so we can follow Him as disciples. The cross we are to bear puts to death the things of this world so we can live the new life Christ has in mind for us to live for eternity. May God bless us with the labor of love in sharing the Gospel that puts us behind Jesus where we cannot hinder the Good News but share it boldly. OUR PREACHER THIS MORNING is Rev. In addition to bringing us the message from God's Word, Dr. Gimbel will also officiate the baptism of his granddaughter, Ingrid Brashear, in our 9:30 a.m. service. We welcome and thank Dr. Gimbel and his wife, Jill, for sharing this happy occasion with their presence among us. 12 Dear Members of Trinity, Rev. Paul Cloeter is retiring at the end of September 2017 after many years of faithful service to Our Lord and His Church. Please help us recognize Pastor Paul s accomplishments in ministry and wish Nancy and Pastor God s blessings in this new chapter of their lives. There will be a catered dinner in the Fellowship Hall on Sunday, October 8 th, at 12:15pm. A program will take place in the Sanctuary at 1:30pm with a cake reception for Pastor Paul and Nancy to follow. There is still room for 180 for the dinner, so if you would like to attend the catered dinner please call the church office to make your reservation ( ). Some of the questions discussed in this course are: How can we know there is a God? Can you know for sure that you will go to Heaven? Can you lose your salvation? Whose sins are forgiven and whose sins are not forgiven? If you are considering membership here at Trinity and you have not been confirmed in the Lutheran Church this is the Adult Confirmation Class required for membership. If you are transferring here from another Lutheran church, I encourage you to take the class because Bible study is always an opportunity to learn and it helps me to get to know you so that I may assist you in becoming an active member. For those that finish this eight-week class and want to pursue membership here at Trinity there is three-week Spiritual Gift discovery process and then a new member reception on Sunday, December 10th, 2017 that will give you the opportunity to publicly declare your devotion to the fellowship here at Trinity. If you complete the class and you are not sure about membership, there is no obligation to join. In John 1:45-46 Philip told Nathaniel about Jesus and then said, Come and see! I encourage Trinity members to do the same by inviting someone to the class and offer to attend with them. We see Jesus in every class! The first class is next Sunday, September 17th at 9:15 a.m. in the Large Classroom. If you have children between the ages of 3 years to High School, they can be in their Sunday school class at the same time. Also, if you have need for the Nursery for younger children it too will be available. There is no cost or pre-registration necessary, just come on Sunday September 17th. 13 Sunday Morning Fellowship In September our hosts are the Youth group and their families. Members who have last names beginning with the letter R are asked to bring treats for our fellowship time. If you can help, please sign up on the bulletin board. $50,000 Matching Challenge Opportunity A member of Trinity Lutheran Church has offered to match all gifts up to a total of $50,000 to reduce the principal on our building mortgage. Reaching the goal of $100,000 will help Trinity reduce the principal and our monthly mortgage payments. All gifts in support of this challenge would be above and beyond your regular giving. This opportunity will begin September 1st culminating on Thanksgiving Day, November 23, Prayerfully consider how the Lord may be challenging you to participate. Envelopes will be available in which to place your check, then please put it in the offering plate. Gabriel s Box is a grief support project for parents who have lost a baby. A door offering will be taken after each service on September 17 th to raise funds for the project. There will also be a small craft sale between services with proceeds also going toward Gabriel s Box. Creative Crafts with a Mission would really appreciate your support in this meaningful ministry. Trinity has recently received an from LCEF stating that as of Sept 30th we will be dropping to the second tier of the Shared Blessings Program. A secret angel is anyone from our congregation who volunteers to secretly support one of Trinity s confirmation students as they work through their confirmation classes. The most important duty of a secret angel is to remember the student in their prayers. Only with the Lord s Will will the children hear His words and learn His lessons. To allow the students to know their angel is near, secret angels drop off anonymous forms of encouragement in the church office called angel mail at least ONCE a month for the student. Secret angel mail is kept simple: cards, letters, words of wisdom, favorite verses, poems or snacks/treats are just a few ideas. The student has the same secret angel throughout 7th and 8th grade. The secret identity of their angel is always a mystery and is not revealed to them until their confirmation day! Trinity s congregation is blessed to have 15 new 7th grade children enrolled in confirmation class this year! Would you prayerfully consider mentoring one of them?
