Seal 220 Ericson Road Cordova, TN (901) (Office) COURSE DESCRIPTION: Ministerial Counseling is an introduction to pastoral and church related methods of counseling. Consideration is given to the scriptural background for counseling, the counselor and counseling, the counseling process, and some of the most common problems that people face. COURSE OBJECTIVES: 1. To define biblical counseling in order to help God s people discern between true biblical counseling, secular counseling and integrationist counseling. 2. To sketch the history of biblical counseling and the factors that led to the diminishment of the practice among evangelicals. 3. To develop the student s philosophy of biblical counseling. 4. To summarize the biblical method of counseling in order to encourage the church to accept its God-given responsibility. 5. To provide biblical guidelines in tackling shepherding issues regarding counseling. 6. To prepare the student to answer the objections presented by secularists and integrationists.

Nashville, TN: Broadman and Holman, COURSE REQUIREMENTS: 1. Exams [Two Major Tests: 50% of the Grade]: Mid-Semester Exam & Final Exam 2. Reading Assignments [Daily: 10% of the Grade]: Students are responsible to maintain and follow the reading checklist distributed in class. Completion of the daily reading assignment is necessary before the last class. Submit electronically. 3. Book Reviews of Two of the Required Texts [10% of the Grade]. Submit electronically. 4. Write & Present a Paper on a Counseling Issue (15 to 20 Pages/15% on papers & 15 % on presentation) [30 % Total]: The Call to the Ministry; Alcohol Abuse; Drug Abuse; Schizophrenia; Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD); Anxiety Disorder; Depression; Premarital & Marital Counseling; Divorce; Body Image; Sexual Problems; Bipolar Disorder; Abortion; Eating Disorders; Cutting; Family Counseling, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Etc... Submit electronically. CLASS ATTENDANCE: Students have a maximum of nine absences during the course term. Three tardy marks are equal to one absence. LATE PAPERS: Papers turned in late will incur a deduction of two points for each day late. The student is responsible to get late papers to his or her instructor. No papers accepted after the last day of class.
3 3 GRADING SCALE: Grade point averages are determined on a 12-point grading system. The grade point value of each letter grade is: A quality points per semester hour A quality points per semester hour B quality points per semester hour B quality points per semester hour B quality points per semester hour C quality points per semester hour C quality points per semester hour C quality points per semester hour D quality points per semester hour D quality points per semester hour D quality points per semester hour F 69 and below 0.0 quality points per semester hour The 12-point grading scale allows a student to graduate possibly with a perfect 4.0 average. A grade point average of 2.0, however, will constitute the lowest passing average to graduate. Anything below 2.0 will be the basis for probation/suspension purposes. PLAGIARISM STATEMENT: Plagiarism includes but is not limited to the following: (a) The direct copying of any source, whether published or unpublished, in whole or in part, without proper acknowledgement. (b) Submitting as one s own work a report, an examination paper, or other assignment that has been prepared by someone else. (c) The paraphrasing of another s work or ideas without proper acknowledgement. Plagiarism will result in a failure of the assignment or possibly of the course.
