2 June 2016 A new chapter will begin in the life of Grace Lutheran June 5 th as Pastor Ann Newgard- Larson becomes our interim minister for the next year. Pastor Ann will continue to serve the Bakke Lutheran congregation with a weekly 8:30am service and help us celebrate at 10am each Sunday. Coffee will be served prior to services, beginning at 9am at Grace. As you will remember, Pastor Ann will be a one-third time, interim pastor with the option of being called as our long term pastor in a year. Judging by Pastor Ann s enthusiasm, we have quality leadership in place! I hope you ll join me Saturday, July 9 th at the NW Water Carnival s Fly-in at the D.L. Airport. We will be flipping pancakes from 7:30am-11 with half of the proceeds going to Grace and half to scholarships for student pilots. It is a family-friendly event with lots of planes coming and going so let Glennis know if you want to flip out with me! Norm Danielson and I represented Grace at the annual NW MN Synod Assembly May at Concordia College. The keynote speaker was Pastor Nadia Bolz-Weber from Denver, CO. We learned through her speech and music that we are called to communicate with one another in truth and love. What does that mean? Here is how she describes congregations as the body of Christ: Speaking the truth in love, we must grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by every ligament with which it is equipped, as each part is working properly, promotes the body s growth in building itself up in love. Ephesians 4:15-16 Pastor Nadia gave us this challenge: Engage in honest and compassionate discourse within the Body of Christ Learn how to recognize the uncomfortable truths we would rather avoid Cultivate the art of speaking truth in love without losing any of the key words: speaking truth and love More on those goals as we digest her message and apply it to our every day lives as members of Grace Lutheran and Christ s ambassadors in our community. Our goal is to encourage others to join us in the celebration of God s gifts available to us 24 hours a day, 7 days a week! That s pretty sweet! Best wishes to you as we start a new chapter together, Kathy Coyle, Grace Council President 2

11 TeacHaiti s Annual Summer Event June 16, 2016 Fair Hills Resort We have an exciting development to report this year in the TeacHaiti non-profit founded by former Detroit Lakes student and Concordia graduate, Miquette Denie McMahon. TeacHaiti is building a new school in the small, impoverished town of St. Michel where Miquette grew up. Construction crews are currently on the site so we are anxious to raise money through a couple of events to help pay for the school. Thursday, June 16 th golfers are invited to begin the day at Wildflower at Fair Hills Resort on Pelican Lake. Registration begins at 10:00 A.M., tee time is noon. The cost is $85 a golfer or $340 per four-some. There are also sponsorships available. By the time the golfers complete play, the public in general is invited to Fair Hills to enjoy generous appetizers and a cash bar beginning at 5:30 P.M. TeacHaiti s book, necklaces, and other art work will be on sale and most importantly, Miquette will be back to visit with the public. This year she is bringing Valentine, a young woman she has mentored over the years. Similar to Miquette, Valentine has worked her way out of poverty by studying hard and is now a food service manager at a private school in Port au Prince. Valentine is a good example of how TeacHaiti has helped a poor child rise up to become a talented young adult. The cost of the social is $15 a person or $25 for two. Everyone is welcome whether you sponsor a TeacHaiti child (for a dollar a day) or you are just interested in learning more about the organization that has made education possible for hundreds of children in Haiti s capital city, Port au Prince and the small, rural town of St. Michel. Please join us for golf and/or the evening social, Thursday, June 16 th at Fair Hills Resort on Pelican Lake. For more information see: or call Sheila Welle (cell) or swelle327@gmail.com. 11
